I've read the books many times when I was kid. Watched the movies multiple times. But its not like I go out and play Quidditch on the weekends
JovialMoose · 51-55, M
@Thevy29 The thought of a grown man playing Quidditch made me chuckle.

CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Yes, I love the books. I re-read the originals in 2020 and it helped me to improve my English. I think it's a great work of art. Books are far better than movies. Movies are meh but still more enjoyable than an average fantasy movie shot at that time. I don't like those directed by Yates though, they are darker and far more dramatic than they should be. When I read books again I was surprised how funny they actually were because Yates made them mostly about doom and gloom.

I have read all the books.
Watched all the movies.
Also watched the play.

I might be a fan.
But I might just love magic and how the stories are weaved.
I don't have any identification or overt connect to it.
@JovialMoose I have the cheaper fire tablet, but it does great.

@NativePortlander1970 Thank you, will look for these.
@SW-User You're so very welcome :)

I was. I read the first and second books when I was 8, and the third book came out that summer, and I waited for each book after that. I watched all the movies but was disappointed, especially as they went on. I guess the writing changed as I aged, because going back and rereading the first book, I remember it seeming like a kid’s book.
I may go back and read them again some day.
JovialMoose · 51-55, M
@itsok I only read the first book.

I had read so many different fantasy authors at that point that I just couldn’t get into it.

Now that I read less, I might go back and see if I could enjoy them. Maybe I was just jaded back then.
no...but i did do the harry potter ride/exhibit at disney world in orlando which was pretty cool...same with spider man
JovialMoose · 51-55, M
@beermeplease Agreed. We did the Harry Potter park twice. I can't remember what the second "big" ride was all about but I don't think it was as good as the first.
I did too. @beermeplease
@Spoiledbrat i was there in 2015...we saw our whitecaps play orlando fc in their inaugural season (their second game)...yay we won 😜
My kids , 22-33 , still have Harry Potter marathons watching all of the films. I just peek in sometimes or sit with them while I have a drink or eat something
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
I was always benevolent to it and liked the books. JK Rowling has done a lot to eliminate that benevolence.
MethDozer · M
@CountScrofula If you have to separate this artist from the art then you need to question your taste in art.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
Why is this in totally the wrong Group?

Anyway, to answer your question...

Not especially. A friend lent me one of the books - I forget which - and I enjoyed it, but not enough to buy my own copy, let alone the lot.

I've nothing against fantasy stories and had long promised myself to buy Mervyn Peake's Ghormenghast, and Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. I have seen a wonderful TV adaptation of the former, and heard the latter as a serial radio drama.
durinsBane1983 · 46-50, M
not really, i am a lord of the rings fan.
Cigarguy101 · 41-45, M
No but my daughter is. She loves to read
SW-User
I’m a Lord of the Rings girl 👧
JovialMoose · 51-55, M
@SW-User That’s where I was too.

My son never got into Harry Potter but is doing another Tolkien run… starting with the Simarillian and he’s just ending with the Hobbit.
mindstruggle · 31-35, F
I like the movies.
Yess very much.
It was kinda after my time. When the first book was released I was almost 22 and in my second metal band. I was reading stuff but not Harry Potter or Twilight.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
I liked the movies they stood out and I grew up with them. I'm also a Gryffindor, chosen by the hat!
JovialMoose · 51-55, M
@Queendragonfly Was the hat on their website?
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@JovialMoose It was in a HP game
Meh. It's got moments. The part I found most amusing was I had zero interest and no intention of seeing it. Till people told me I "couldn't"
bookerdana · M
I really loved the books, its always hard to transfer things like that to film
JovialMoose · 51-55, M
@bookerdana You liked the books better than the movies?
bookerdana · M
@JovialMoose yes because the books had already emblazoned how it should look
i read the books.
mainly out of boredom. but then closure..
JovialMoose · 51-55, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Did you enjoy them or not?
@JovialMoose they were ok.
you could predict the way it was going after book 5..
SW-User
I wouldn't join any fan club (unlike my colleague who encouraged students to call him "Prof. Snape") but I read the first book or two with my kids and enjoyed the first movie.

I will probably read the recently published Yiddish translation of the first volume.

I don't think J.K. Rowlings' controversial statements about gender stuff have any bearing on whether the books are good or not. I love Dostoevsky and he was an outright antisemite.
spice1 · M
No never I can't stand the way the books are written and don't like the movies.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
I like the movies and read one book. I generally like that universe
SW-User
No....could never get into the books or movies
No, I was never interested in that.
SW-User
Meh
I could take it or leave it
I wasn't obsessed
thepeculiarpanda · 36-40, M
Not especially, nope.
NerdySoph · 26-30, F
Always. Forever.
likesnatural · 70-79, M
Nope. Not into that genre.
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
Yes 💛🦡🖤
nedkelly · 61-69, M
Allelse · 36-40, M
No. I enjoyed the movies, but haven’t rewatched them or gotten hyped about the stuff.
Jexie · 26-30, F
No. The Babe is tho
JovialMoose · 51-55, M
@V00doo Good for her. My son never got into the books or the movies.
Skippyskiptic · 41-45, M
Harry Dresden kicks more ass than Potter.
MethDozer · M
Not at all. It's like 70's and 80's fantasy without any of the darkness and coolness.
I found the books and movies to be quite enjoyable. If you like such movies and stories, I also suggest The Golden Compass and Inkheart.
