Should songs with questionable lyrics be banned?

Pinball wizard by The Who contains these lyrics
That deaf, dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pinball
Or Junior's Farm by Paul McCartney
I was talking to an Eskimo
Said he was hoping for a fall of snow
After all Dr Seuss had his book banned for showing an Asian eating rice
I personally feel there was no intention of ill will

Whenever I see/hear some argument somewhere and the word BAN is attached my first thought is always
Whom does it serve to ban this ?
The very idea that some person or body has the right let alone the power to ban anything creative is worrying.

Pastors and church leaders have often caught media coverage with their protests and placards decrying blasphemy or 'The end of civilization !' because of something they oppose.
Politicians are the most corruptible form of human life on the planet but watch them go if they think there's a vote in it.

In today’s world, it appears that the less intelligent people are the ones who are most likely to be offended
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@nedkelly haha. No kidding
smiler2012 · 56-60
@nedkelly some things are unacceptable if suggested as racist or discrimanary but some of the political correct brigade take this too far and are touchy about things not even meant as offensive bt taken that way
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@smiler2012 some people seem to always be looking for it 🙄
Crazychick · 36-40, F
The "pinball" song doesn't say anything negative about deaf, dumb and blind kids, quite the opposite in fact. As for the Paul McCartney one, I don't think that's derogatory either. I've heard far more outrageous lyrics than those.
@Crazychick I'm beginning to suspect that's his point.
Noooo nor should Dr Suess books! People are offended by everything… goodness gracious.
darkmere1983 · 46-50, M
no they shoudn't, freedom of speech, we're already losing much of our freedoms.
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@darkmere1983 and that speech was when these words were not deemed offensive
ArishMell · 70-79, M
I would ask those doing such banning just whom they imagine they are feeling vicariously offended for, and if they asked them.

Anyone who knows The Who's rock opera, about what is now called "child abuse", will know whether "Tommy" the Pinball Wizard really is "blind, deaf or dumb" as the narrator in the song describes him, and why.

Further, they will also know that the last adjective is used in its proper meaning, not the American slang one for "foolish".

I wish (in examples like the WAP song but...) freedom of speech is a good thing. free to take in the content and free to reject it. Can't be banned as long as there is a way to avoid it....like not listening.

[@:axeroberts] 🤔what i always never got was a famous song by elvis costello and the attractions olivers army . what one line meant when it mentions one less white ni@@er which is an impossibility as you are either one or the other 🤷‍♂️always puzzles me to what he was talking about exactly
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@smiler2012 originally it was not a racist word. John Lennon even wrote the song Women are the N of the world
Ducky · 31-35, F
What's "questionable" about those lyrics? 🤔
@Axeroberts Eskimos are what they are. What do you call them?
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@Bellatrix2083 Inuit. Apparently Eskimo is offensive now 🙄
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Axeroberts Not in the song. That uses the adjective dumb, correctly (meaning "unable to speak").
Musicman · 61-69, M
Under the leadership of the left we are seeing more and more censorship.
The FCC needs shooting for dropping the ball
Not at all. People vote with their wallets on the music they like.

Those who blast their music and violate the hearing of others at odd hours should be addressed by law enforcement.

But headphones make good neighbors without restricting rights.
@bijouxbroussard My neighbors listen to the best music on the planet.

Whether they want to or not.
@LordShadowfire Well, there was that time in my 20s when I drove through the neighborhood, windows down, blasting classical music…just to make a point.
No one complained, but they looked very confused. 🤔
@bijouxbroussard I love that. Also I don't sit outside listening to music, because there's too many bugs. I just couldn't resist.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
No, and neither are those lyrics "questionable".
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@uncalled4 apparently to some. Not to me either
