+5 "Jingle Bells" was not universally banned, but a school district in Brighton, New York, removed it from its music curriculum in 2021 due to concerns about its potential origins in 19th-century blackface minstrel shows, according to bostonglobe.com. The decision was influenced by research indicating the song's first public performance may have been in a minstrel show context, raising equity concerns despite the song's innocent, secular image. Why the "ban" occurred: Minstrel show ties: A 2017 article by Boston University professor Kyna Hamill suggested the song may have been first performed in a minstrel show in 1857. Blackface minstrel shows: Such performances often featured white actors in blackface, which is a racist and offensive form of entertainment. Equity lens: The Brighton Central School District decided to remove the song as part of a broader effort to review its curriculum through a diversity and equity lens, choosing songs without controversial or offensive potential. The controversy surrounding the decision: Backlash: The school district faced significant backlash from residents who felt the decision went too far and that "Jingle Bells" is a harmless, innocent song. Misinformation: Some reports and community discussions claimed the song contained explicit references to slavery, though the professor's research did not find support for these claims. Professor's surprise: Kyna Hamill herself was surprised by the decision, stating she had no discovery of slavery imagery connected to the song. She believed the song should still be sung by children.
The song originally wasn't even about Christmas, the lyrics changed over time because the original author meant it as a dedication to another singer who had a troupe that performed in blackface. It wasn't even a Christmas song. Originally, the person who wrote the song was a staunch supporter of the confederacy that fiercely opposed his father who was an minster and a major abolitionist against slavery.
We Conquer or Die! Strike for the South! Our Battle Flag!
*Note I didn't put the exclamation marks there, they were already part of the song title.
And other racist songs that ended in "!!!!!!!" to further highlight how passionate he was about forcing black people to do work white people were too fat and lazy to do. The guy who wrote it was a piece of crap, abandoning his wife and his kids to go chase gold, by the time he made it back, he was as poor as when he first started. Believe it or not, he left plenty of females and almost certainly had daddy issues. He was such a loser.
At any rate, no one is forcing you "not" to listen to the song, I can turn on the radio and find it. You're going to be okay, breathe.. it will be fine. You'll live to see another day tomorrow, I promise it will be okay. Starbucks coffee cups changing is okay too, Starbucks will still be there, it's okay, I promise. Don't freak out, you're fine.
@SatanBurger You think you're a decent person but you're not. Your 'slavery' slip up reveals everything anyone needs to know about your character and true motivations
As for slavery generally, what kind of slavery are you talking about? Sexual slavery which many countries still have, mining for gold, jewels etc which are ironically in developing worlds, wage slavery, debt, the banks..
What are we talking about here? Because it's all relevant 😂
You can find extreme examples of anything if you look hard enough. I'm a leftist and I don't think it is racist and neither does anyone I know. For example: how many schools are there in New York? In a pool of thousands, you can always find a fish that swims in a mockable way.
The website you are quoting from looks very partisan and right-wing. It's not using representative samples to criticise its opponents.
It is to the point where no one takes any of this nonsense seriously. If something is uncovered that is legitimately deemed to be racist, no one is going to pay attention.
@bijouxbroussard Yep. I swear I cringe and turn to another channel on the radio when that song comes on. Sadly, outside of that line, I like the song. But I've never been able to listen to it after the first time I heard the refrain.
@SW-User Funny thing is, that song came out when I was around 12, and my friends and I were singing along. I don’t remember any of us taking offense. It was Lou Reed. 😃
SW-User
@bijouxbroussard lol. Yes, as kids we generally don't pick up on things that are considered normal, back in the day. I don't really recall when I became aware of it but I was young.
Brighton Central School District Superintendent Kevin McGowan is defending Council Rock Primary School’s decision to drop secular holiday classic “Jingle Bells” from its curriculum.
On Dec. 23, the Rochester Beacon reported on the move to stop using and teaching the song, based in part on an article by professor Kyna Hamill, director of Boston University’s Core Curriculum, stating that the first public performance of "Jingle Bells" may have occurred in 1857 at a minstrel show in Boston.
The story quoted Council Rock principal Matt Tappon as saying the song had been replaced with other songs that didn’t have “the potential to be controversial or offensive.” "
Before one can come up with a comical retort to woke bullschiff some learned professor has written a paper about it
@Theyitis They like to demonize Rosa Parks too, a school unbanned primarily black authors after it was found that suburban white moms tried to get all black authors banned on the grounds that it was teaching critical race theory. One of the authors banned was Rosa Parks herself lol. So the school voted to re-establish those books.
There is nothing racist in the lyrics. Just because someone, at some point, sang the song in Black Face, doesn't make the song racist. They're grabbing at straws on this one.
A few weeks ago, our local paper ran an article entitles "Is Math Education Racist?" I read the article. It discussed how math is currently being taught by some to combat the supposed racist instruction, but nothing was said that in support of the title of the article.
Why do I click on these sensationalized stories on SW? All you're doing is cherry-picking stories to make fun of the "woke crowd." Meanwhile they cherry-pick stories from the right. And it's one big cafeteria food fight. Except the stakes are a lot higher.
And, after that they are going to take away our "blue sky" because it leaves out all other colours. And, then sidewalks will be banned because not everyone can walk. And what next after that??? Cancelling white snow???
It's the word association game that toddlers play. "A sleigh?! That's traveling in the snow. Snow is white. I hate all things white! It's racist!" or "Sleighs are pulled by horses. They use whips to motivate the horse. Whips were used in slavery. Racist!" Enter any given daycare and you'll hear this mental exercise.
Lol.. they know Christmas started as a pagan festival, why are they dragging their feet on that ban! Just try it already and watch corporate America squash PC righteous indignation like a pumpkin the day after Halloween.
And it wasn't even the song declared "racist"; some Professor back in 2017 wrote up the fact that the song was at times performed in Minstrel Shows 100-plus years ago and so, suddenly, it now has "racist origins".
