Has anyone had therapist that mainly listens to you/nods?

My last two or three did this, and my current one, while very kind .. does this as well. I am there to get feedback, tips and affirmations, anything that can aid this healing of severe PTSD. I am not sure why or if they believe EVERY patient only wants a sounding board or just a pair of ears? I have major trouble speaking up too, that is part of my severe anxiety. I feel so awkward asking for what I need, with anyone really :( But I guess you just need to find that 'right' therapist, that really CARES to go forth MORE with you and ask questions, or show they are wondering about connecting the dots in your past, to how you are NOW. Anyone else go through this ?

The first therapist I went to literally just sat there doing nothing, I suppose waiting for me to talk? Didn't try to get me to talk, prompt me, engage whatsoever, just sat there staring at me. Little 10 year old me didn't understand what was going on, and was even shyer than current me, so we literally would just sit there staring at each other for an hour. Luckily, didn't go to her very long.

@SarahAndSamantha It's not fetishizing, it's life itself.

@Coralmist he did and that put an end to my going back there.

@LilPrincess I am sorry friend 🌺 You deserve to hear positive words. I bet there is a good therapist out there for both of us...just FINDING them is proving a bit tricky.

@Coralmist As do you. I hope you are able to find someone that is more helpful🌸
Yes, I phoned crisis lines. They helped more. They're free and anonymous. You can get a new counsellor everytime and build up things to talk about at any time you feel like calling.
Also please run away from why you can't speak up and start doing so anyway. It's very important. Practice with the counsellor without telling them.
I think they're trained to nod and listen without causing you to do something.
Some of them are less helpful and
probably considering other jobs
Can I have best answer?

Doesn't sound like they are really interested in help you or maybe not really qualified to be counseling anyone. I would think they would have questions and even suggestions of things you might try to improve your coping and management skills and ways to work through and free yourself from the chains that bind you. Are they helping you at all without any kind of input or feedback?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@goodlil666 They are not really helping unfortunately. They are very kind thank goodness but no real affirmations or tips or tools for me to try. They did lend me a book but I can get books myself.

It’s both of you.

Therapy isn’t just about speaking or listening. It requires that you have an action plan. Whatever the issue, you need goals to get from point A to point B and eventually the finish line.

Ask direct questions that focus on you getting better over time, but interim goals are critical to success.

They're using you for a cash cow, keep your money 💰 in your pocket. For best advice go see a priest at a church ⛪️, preferably one thats noted for being a gas 🎒 bag chatter box 📦. Have you ever thought of joining a quoir with your singing voice you should do.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Jamesy I don't go to church really nor am religious . That would be neat to be in a choir.
Do you directly ask them for their input? I think therapists are uncomfortable offering advice if it's not asked for. Like they think they'll offend you if they say something you disagree with.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@SinlessOnslaught That could be true. But they really should offer positive words and ideas on the whole...not me grappling trying to grasp at straws to help myself. 🙁
@Coralmist Maybe they'll start doing that if you show on a regular basis that their input is welcome.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
You need to ask about their "modality" and how they work. Many are deliberately not offering you their view and opinions as that's not how they work.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@OldBrit True and effective therapy is getting to the root of the clients issues..then TOGETHER finding solutions not just listening you know?

Hmm doesn't seem like a very good "therapist", although I've never had one. Seems feedback is necessary otherwise it's like talking to yourself?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Magenta Exactly!!

My therapists asks question now and again but mostly listens.
Domking · 61-69, M
That is very unprofessional

Is your therapist named Jack?

🤪

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy (movie line reference)

But seriously, so sorry you are not getting the help you need.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@JoyfulSilence Thanks ..lol. she is very kind but I truly do need more feedback..tools etc.
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
@Coralmist

And hugs.

That isn’t very helpful, you aren’t paying her just to listen to you. You need her feedback so you can through the stuff you’re talking about.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Coralmist Honestly she sounds pretty useless. You could talk to yourself at this point and it would be the same thing. You need someone who is going to recognize where you need help and give you solutions to make things better.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@iamonfire696 Yes I think a change might be positive. We did click and she offered a few affirmation in the first couple months..but mostly just listening now. I agree i do need help in finding solutions..ty🌺

@Coralmist You’re welcome
