Always take the lump sum. You cant count on tomorrow. You can invest your own money
4meAndyou · F
I don't play the lottery, but if I did, I would take the lump sum. You can't guarantee you will still be alive to take the annuity every year, and you might miss out, so...lump sum. Half of that would go to taxes...immediately...so you would not take home quite as much as you think.
If I had all of that money I would definitely buy a house.

I'll take the lump sum. The first thing I will do is clean my pants after I shit myself. Probably buy a house up North and a couple of new cars.
BizSuitStacy · M
Lump sum. First thing I'll do is call friends and family asking to borrow money. After they all tell me no, then I'll break the news about winning Powerball.

Id build a bespoke cottage right in front of the sea, in either the Hebrides, or Cornwall or somewhere. That’s all, not big. I’d build some tiny house/wooden studio’s out the back to rent out to artists/writers/musicians who want to get away and create. I’m not a materialistic person, I adore simple living so I wouldn’t want much else. I’d probably invest the rest and build an art centre for mentally ill people, I’d also buy art supplies for many many psych wards. I think the current sum here in Australia is 140m/

@calicuz To avoid the nonsense. The schmucks I haven’t seen since grade school for example all suddenly come out of the woodwork. Yeah. I suddenly have A LOT of friends. They’re not my friends. They have stories. All of them are sad. And they have needs. What they need most is money. So when I rightly tell them to shove off I become the jerk? Yeah no. I’d change my name and then my address. In fact I’d leave immediately and have my stuff put into storage while a realtor finds me a new home. Hop on a ship and vanish for a while just to avoid that phony and sad nonsense.

The annuity. I like the safety that offers over 30 years. I know year one I would want to cover any debts and probably go a little crazy. Also don't like idea of all that money in one place while I figure out what to do with it. I'd need a financial adviser.
I would buy a house and install all the necessary handicap stuff (ramps, chair lift, bathroom accesories, ect.) to make mom's life a bit easier. From what I understand that stuff is hefty chunk of change.

Lump sum, buy a mountain or a huge farm, spend my time with animals that I rescue.

@UnderLockDown
I didn't know mountains were for sale, but with that kind of money, I guess you can by anything.

I don’t buy Powerball tickets cuz I don’t want that much money. It will only ruin your life. And that much money changes you into a different person. I only play a local lottery when it gets up to $50,000 to $100,000. If I can just win that much, I could pay off all the money I owe.
Nebula · 41-45, F
I don't ever want that much money
I never play.

Annuity for sure…you can’t blow it all at once if you don’t get it all at once, lol. The big buy is a four bedroom house with a detached 7 car garage, one bay having a lift and full tool set.

Take half of it and divide it equally among my family. Step two would be to to wait and see how many family members I suddenly learned about 😁

@icedsky or maybe someone laid down the law this time. Jeffrey Epstein won $25 million one time and the story was used to bring up the point that lotteries might be fixed

The lump sum. I'm not going to live long enough to spend the annuity, and I have no one to leave it to.
calicuz · 56-60, M
@PhoenixPhail
Same. I do have a son to leave the money to, but I'd still rather take the lump sum, and decide now how to leave it to him.

I'd buy a house in a neighborhood of millionaires because my neighbors would never ask to borrow money.
