Thankfully YES. The main character has to be there from beginning until the end. Having the option to stay or go, or just pop in for lunch or when they read the last will and testimony has merits :)
Thinking of all those multi episode stories that I exited before the end of episode one is, in a way, like an escape from prison.

I am the main character in my story. Just not the main character or even an important character in everyone elses story.

This one here? Or that one over there, i see myself more in the one right under that thing there.
At this point I'm holding on by the skin of my teeth to not become one of the villains. I just want some damn peace and quiet but that is getting hard to come by and every sensory input seems to hit my nervous system like a stroke of lightning and a ton of bricks all in one.
In the "story" you're speaking of, we play one of two rolls. We are either the 'star' of the movie, or we are the 'supporting actor' FOR the person who IS the star of the movie. It's one or the other throughout our lifetime.
At all times, we are either playing a supporting role in someone else's story, or someone else is playing a supporting role in OUR story, in which case we would then the Main Character of our own story.
@AMelancholyHaunting My replies have nothing to do with ego and if you understood the meaning of ego, you wouldn't make such foolish claims. I am only pointing out that your OP has nothing to do with ego either! You may have intended it to read otherwise, but you failed to achieve that.
Ego was not implied, inferred or even suggested on any level in your original post, so get off that kick and stop back-peddling from where you thought you were going with this.
I cannot help the fact that you do not know how to effectively express your thoughts in the form of written words. That is not my issue to deal with; that is your's.
