What is one thing your parents told you that you should have listened too?

Please stop trying to grow up so fast; you will miss your childhood once it is gone!

Yeah.....I should have listened....
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
My mom never gave me any good advice. She's an irresponsible person.

But I wish I would have listened to my dad when he warned me about how anxiety creeps up on you in our family. He said he was "normal" til he hit his 30s, then anxiety developed and basically stole his life away. The same happened to me on my 30s. 😔
Silentpleasure · 31-35, F
@DearAmbellina2113 Yeah, my mother was a toxic person too. Sorry to hear about your anxiety 🥺

🤔

The only thing I can think of is:

"Don't dress like a slut."

(I wore some tight lower cut shirts, or crop tops as a teenager along with my girlfriends when we'd go out and paint the town or go swimming).

They weren't right. Because it was ok for people to wear those things.

But they weren't wrong either. 🤷‍♀️. If I had maybe listened to them, I'd have maybe encountered less trouble from tipsy horny men. But maybe all or most of it would have happened anyway.
@Scribbles Well I agree with that part. You should dress slutty if you want, but if guys don't understand consent, then kick 'em in the youknowwhatsits.
Silentpleasure · 31-35, F
@Scribbles Yeah its crazy how that works out. Great defensive strategy BTW
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@Silentpleasure It's not a great defensive strategy really.

Because you lose lots of opportunities and openings by focusing on trying to kick one spot.

But I should just say fight with anything to ANY weak spot if you need to. Be fearless, don't be afraid of hurting someone intent on hurting you. Strike, lash out, kick (however many times you need to)until you can get yourself away. Idk.

Dad: "The VHS player is not a car toy garage."
Silentpleasure · 31-35, F
@Queendragonfly I streamlined them to broken and future R&D projects lol
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Silentpleasure Creative!
Silentpleasure · 31-35, F
@Queendragonfly Yeah my mom didn't think so. Father learned to keep them so I could mess with the broken stuff and leave the new stuff alone lol.

My mum told me she had eyes in the back of her head and she knew everything. Never believed her until I got to the age she was then when she used to tell me. I kind of think I know what she means now but I’m not a mother myself.
Silentpleasure · 31-35, F
@SW-User Ninja instincts engaged!
Behave or I'll give you something to cry about!
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@BohemianBoo ouch, that sucks.

I was a pretty good kid for the most part. My mom had no trouble pulling me and whooping my backend with a spoon whenever I sassed her or was a smartass though. Which thankfully wasn't real often.
I just never pushed further than a light whooping

I don't think it was good parenting of them and would never do it to any kids if I have them, but it was also one of the only parenting tool I think they knew to use if their kid really wasn't listening, well, besides throwing them out of the house. But it didn't traumatize me either.

@BohemianBoo I can understand that. I'm not upset at my parents either.
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
I dont have an answer right now this just reminded me one time when i was really young i grabbed my moms curling iron with my full hand and my skin melted to it.
Silentpleasure · 31-35, F
@GuyWithOpinions I made that mistake as well! Took a weeks for the blisters to heal :(
originnone · 61-69, M
not so much advice, but I wish I had done a lot more to care for them late in life...a huge regret...my sister did so much.
Study harder because I'm going to be like the garbage man. O.O
Silentpleasure · 31-35, F
@Rilynn Ouch, kind of a grim reality of a message there. So did you exceed the garbage man job and reach new heights?
@Silentpleasure Better than before but not that high. Improved my chances at least.
akindheart · 61-69, F
my parents were not supportive. they had a limited education and didn't comprehend true success so nothing.
BarbossasHusband · 36-40, M
Don't eat so much candy 🤷‍♀️

@Silentpleasure
I discovered that truth by when mature.
As they say experience is a comb that life gives you by when you get bald.
Silentpleasure · 31-35, F
@ElRengo I am so stealing that saying :D
ElRengo · 70-79, M
@Silentpleasure
It´s hard to believe origin was an old professional boxer in his late years.
There is another more widely known saying that was a "poster" in my youth (that is by when the Dead Sea was still alive): "By when I had all answers they changed the questions"
But don´t lost hope, life haves the habit of challenging it´s own teachings andnot always so badly.
It was in my mature years when I found what love means.
And just before that I was and for good reasons quite skeptical about.
Expressman · 61-69
Mom never gave good advice. I'll admit, she wasn't that smart either. How can you admire someone when you mentioned seeing a hummingbird land on a branch say "Humming birds don't have legs!"

Or when you ask "How did Getty get rich and she replies "By picking up their clothes" she had the audacity to complain about me dropping out, yet she'd done it years before.

Her legacy wasn't good. And she swing a mean belt.

They always tell me i was a mistake and they hate me...i believe them now
