I read a long time ago (so I don't know if it's still true) that ripping up paper money, or defacing or burning it (to light a cigar, maybe) is destroying government property and you could be charged.

@ArishMell I haven't had a 'branch' bank since 1983, but the PO used to act for the then Girobank so it wasn't an issue and now ATMs ironically give access to cash I rarely need. My bank does have a few branches, but I can't remember the last time I went into one. I have found the phone service perfectly acceptable for my needs in the event I needed to speak to someone, but that doesn't suit my deaf friend who finds the phone a challenge. He is worried as his NatWest branch, the last bank in his town, is about to close. I think the plan to open a 'Hub' which all the banks will staff on a rota basis. So far nowhere has been identified.

@FreddieUK Yes, I wonder if and when any of these so-called "Hubs" will appear. It seems fasionable to call anything a "Hub" but I would want real service in a real building, whatever jargon is used to name it.

There is an ATM near my home for my normal needs, as I regularly use cash, but there are times I want proper counter service, not spend all morning at my expense in a 'phone queue with no guarantee of what I want; nor do I want to struggle with a web-site designed not to answer your query.

@Elessar you'll be amazed how quickly you get rid of the coins when you try to match the exact price or try to round the change. When my total is € 8,45 and I don't have that exactly, but do have plenty of bills and 45 cents in change, I make it € 10,45 to get a single €2 coin back, which I can use when my total is something like €11,95 next time. That way I rarely gather a lot of coins.
