Have a heat pump. Thermostat has a range for night and for day; portable sensor you can move to room you want to be the controlling area, which I keep in the bedroom. As for heat--since it rises--initially it will try bringing down the layer or warmer air at the ceiling to the lower levels, before turning on the heat.

If the temperature gets down to about 4*F, then I do have to turn it on and leave it on. If its in the low to mid 30's (F), then I turn it off, and the heat from the apartments below me is sufficient.

Last July I was fired for leaving a window open and because, like, lolz, I've been the same uncomfortable last in and first out of a job since 1975. And everyone hates us boomers! My golden years are no exception, we were "too damn many kids" in 1965 and yes, adults said it to me, then. Can't afford social security, of course! Hate taking care unless you get huge cash! No kidding, evert day since 1962.

I don't have any heating (or cooling) to leave on. Open windows and doors (or not). with a single ceiling fan.

It comes on as set by the timer and thermostat, but I sometimes need switch it on without those.
