How often do you leave your heat on?

@DeWayfarer I called the landlord once when the kitchen had ice in the sink - he said no, you don't have heat in there - don't touch the thermostat in the hallway either, unless you want the basement to explode! That was back in the eighties, in Boston. The rent was way lower!

@DeWayfarer Thermostats are a nightmare from Hell. Why are the controls so insanely counterintuitive? 😫

@Roundandroundwego I wasn't paying a quarter of the rent now. And the heating was included in the whole building for everyone. Steam pipes ran throughout all three stories, including in the basement were I lived.

@DeWayfarer my prep school had those pipes, the heat went from building to building.

@kwood1 I never had a problem with them. Actually I have had to replace a couple of thermal couplers by myself.

@Roundandroundwego Those were the days. I have some electric underfloor heating with a little number pad box which is supposed to let you control it. The instructions online are pure gibberish

@Roundandroundwego The only problem with them was the asbestos blankets around the pipes

@DeWayfarer no problem as long as you never tried to clean them up 😁

@kwood1 I currently have such a remote for my heater/air conditioner.

@kwood1 Well they did tend to crack after a very long time of use.

@kwood1 Had one of those in my previous apartment. Again no problem. No instructions either for that one.

@kwood1 Well I do admit that I have been familiar with electronics even as a kid. I once took the TV apart to my mother's dismay! 🤣

Darn lucky I didn't kill myself on the capacitor! 😈

My brother had to put it back together. It still worked. 🙃
