Does your family have a traditional meal on New Years Day to ring good luck?

For our family it's always been ham and beans with sweet cornbread.

@KiwiBird We used dates wrapped in bacon and stuffed with either an almond or cheese. YUM!
Yulianna · 26-30, F
@KiwiBird @Ksmile14 those all sound cool, and thanks for the info on buffalo wings.
ozgirl512 · 31-35, F
Yep... It's called leftovers!
😜
@ozgirl512 I lack both imagination and motivation. It felt like I finished thanksgiving leftovers just in time for the christmas leftovers lol
ozgirl512 · 31-35, F
@SooperSarah lol... I've often wondered about a potential overlap
@ozgirl512 turns out a 14lb turkey is a bit much for two people lol
vetguy1991 · 56-60, M

@Ambroseguy80 no, but i petted the roast...
@Yulianna do you carve...?
Yulianna · 26-30, F
@TheSirfurryanimalWales it is a long time since we had one of those! and carving was Papa's performance!
sciguy18 · M
Not for a main meal, but lentils are customarily involved.
@sciguy18 Wow, I didn’t realize they were a source. 🙁
sciguy18 · M
@bijouxbroussard Pretty much anything that is pickled has more sodium than I’m supposedly allowed.
@sciguy18 That makes sense.
Dlrannie · 36-40, F
My Mum has traditionally made a selection of Dim Sum for New Year - but will have to wait to February 12 th for that 🙂🐼🥢
Yulianna · 26-30, F
@Dlrannie i agree, i do love it, although i have eaten only in one restaurant here, called BAO bao.ua had dim sum a few times there. 🙂🤗😘💋❤💋😘🤗🙂

New Years Eve I usually make manicotti or stuffed shells, didn’t this year b/c I ordered pizza we love from a distance the night before.
Ambroseguy80 · 56-60, M
@MellyMel22 😋😋😋🤤
Ksmile14 · F
@MellyMel22 Mmmmm Manicotti......mmmmmmmm Pizza ! 🤤
Was raised on black eyed peas and hog jowl. Incorporated sauerkraut to accommodate the Pennsylvania side of the family.
Ksmile14 · F
@KrackerBash Nice. I'm thinking I'm gonna have to try some hog jowl.
Aquarius39 · 46-50, F
I usually make Korean food for New Years.

@Aquarius39 That looks so good !
Aquarius39 · 46-50, F
@Ksmile14 Yes, it really tastes delicious.
Aquarius39 · 46-50, F
@bijouxbroussard Yes, it's delicious. 😊
exexec · 70-79, C
pork, black eyed peas, cabbage, corn bread
Ksmile14 · F
@exexec I know a lot of people do the black-eyed peas thing. We've always just used like Navy beans or something like that!
exexec · 70-79, C
@Ksmile14 I think black eyed peas are a southern tradition.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
"Good luck" is a sign of pagan ritual that I have become more aware of although I recognize it is often offered as a casual albeit empty gesture to be conversational and conventional. Personally, I avoid engaging in it.

In any case, we usually just have a meal together without any stipulation on what the food will necessarily be.
Ambroseguy80 · 56-60, M
The family I came from did. It was pork and sauerkraut, usually, or if not pork, something else that went well with sauerkraut (knockwurst, kielbasa, etc...)
Ksmile14 · F
@Ambroseguy80 Pork seems to be a theme...so does either sauerkraut or cabbage.
Ambroseguy80 · 56-60, M
@Ksmile14 oh yes. Cabbage was often seen as well. I know the sauerkraut was a German tradition. Not sure about the cabbage
That sounds fantastic! Love cornbread and smokey beans.

Ours usually just another turkey, but it will be roast beef and parsnip with a pudding tomorrow.
Ksmile14 · F
@SethGreene531 I LIKE CORNBREAD AND BEANS :)
@Ksmile14 YUM!! 😋
Persephonee · 26-30, F
We always have a fondue!

I think because it's infinitely expandable if there's more guests randomly, and takes a while so you don't get the 'waiting around til midnight' vibe
Yulianna · 26-30, F
@Persephonee 🤗 yes, it is a good idea and should never run out...

KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@ozgirl512 Cornish NOT Welsh
ozgirl512 · 31-35, F
@KiwiBird ooops....I did say that didn't I!
Very true... Totally Cornish...mea culpa!
* Falls on sword before a mob of irate Cornish people *
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
No but they are quite stubborn about the superstition that no poultry or fish can be eaten that day because that would take good luck away.
Ksmile14 · F
@CrazyMusicLover Interesting!
SW-User
We don't. There doesn't seem to be much of a tradition for that around here, but I like the idea of it.
Sunnykel76 · 46-50, F
Pork, sauerkraut, kolbassi, mashed potatoes and dumplings.
Ksmile14 · F
@Sunnykel76 Dumplings sound good!
Chelsiegirl · 46-50, T
No we were never that close.
Ksmile14 · F
@Chelsiegirl Then maybe you should start your own tradition. 🤗
Chelsiegirl · 46-50, T
@Ksmile14 well i kinda do. Order food for myself and veg all night playing video games.
Ksmile14 · F
@Chelsiegirl Well that's something! 🤗

Ksmile14 · F
@SW-User Then maybe you should start a tradition. :) 🤗
Ksmile14 · F
@Elessar Nice!!!
Redstar · 36-40, M
Nope. I didn't even know that was a thing.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
No we do not believe in good luck. However we usually, purely by desire and not by tradition, eat a nice steak.
Ksmile14 · F
@MartinTheFirst Steak is always good!
“Hoppin’ John” (blackeyed peas with rice), white cornbread.
Ksmile14 · F
@bijouxbroussard Is white cornbread sweet?
@Ksmile14 Generally, no.
Ksmile14 · F
@bijouxbroussard We have sweet but I've had the kind that's not and it was good too
Donotfolowme · 56-60, F
