houses are great if you are handy enough to keep it repaired yourself.. otherwise you are better off with an appartment
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@BlackBlossom I had to spend about 8k in plumbing repairs last year. When I bought my house seven years ago, my rent was the same as my new mortgage. Rent has increased so much over the past seven years that I still saved money compared to renting. It's gotten crazy here. The apartment I used to pay 1k a month for now runs for almost 2k a month.

A house requires a fair amount of maintenance, which can be a time and money sink. But you can play music or movies pretty much as loud as you want without bothering the neighbors. And there is no invisionable future in which I do not have a garage. I love my garage, especially this time of year.

I like houses. I like privacy. I'm lucky enough to be able to have that luxury.
SW-User
@SW-User Dude! Lol. How? I will block everything in me if my door was open. Even outside air cannot see what inside air is seeing.🤣
SW-User
@SW-User An open bathroom door signifies freedom to me😁
SW-User
@SW-User 🤣 Freedom from what? Actually don't answer. Someone elses thread and I am conscious of hijacking it.

I used to feel lonely living in our house. We were up on a hill, with a long driveway, and we never saw the neighbors. If you wanted to take a walk, there was no nearby block you could walk around to double back. You had to walk straight out to a predetermined midpoint, and then walk back, and it was like a ghost town...no one was ever outside.

Repairs were always expensive. We pumped water up the hill from an artesian well, and when the pump broke, it was about $3000.00.
4meAndyou · F
@iamnikki Well, it was when we first moved there. But it was very lonely. And that's what the ex wanted. He wanted to be really distant from everything and everyone.

There was a lot about it that was great...or it would have been if things had not gone south. I think I don't appreciate what COULD have been enough...just because I know what happened there.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@4meAndyou I would ask why you settled on it if you were lonely there but that's probably too much.
4meAndyou · F
@iamnikki I am, unfortunately, a dope when it comes to some things. I wanted the ex to be happy...and that was what made him happy. We weren't going to find anything else so removed and private in our price range. And I didn't know in advance that it would become that lonely. I had my job, and things were good at first.
FaeLuna · 31-35, F
I absolutely hate neighbors. I don't want to be near them, I don't want to see them, or hear them, or share anything with them except the public road. I vastly prefer houses. I want control of my living space. I want to be able to build stuff on land I can call mine. I want to put up shelves and repaint the walls.

I currently live in an apartment and I hate every second of it.
TheOrionbeltseeker · 36-40, M
@FaeLuna hopefully you will find a home soon in the coming time.
FaeLuna · 31-35, F
@TheOrionbeltseeker Me too. I'm looking, but everything in this area is overpriced and too small.
Lived in both, apartment is easier to manage feels more cosy and also I like being able to be seen at certain times or seeing others throughout their day sometimes too.
SinlessOnslaught · 26-30, M
Apartment because it's easier and I'm not materialistic lol.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Think about 20% to 25% down plus the income to cover all other expenses! Got it? 🤔
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@CanadianTraveller look at his age group! That's a factor now.
CanadianTraveller · 56-60, M
@DeWayfarer Age is a big factor. Generally, the 50 to 70 generation is probably one of the most wealthy as a general group than any other generation has been. I, like many parents, are giving advances on inheritances to their children to buy a home and have the same economic advantage that we did.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@CanadianTraveller the matter I suspect is moot. He liked my reply. Make of that what you will! 😊
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
From a practical point of view it's probably easier and cheaper to run or make repairs to an apartment than a house.

But ultimately, anywhere that feels like 'home' is good
CanadianTraveller · 56-60, M
@Picklebobble2 In the very long run, home ownership will pay off, depending where you live.

Here, a reasonable apartment in a safer area is about $1,600 per month. If you buy the apartment, which then becomes a condo, it is about the same because of condo fees. Both rent and condo fees are subject to increases, often on the whims of the property owner. As for repairs, when you own an apartment (condo) often repairs and upgrades are also regulated where the landowner has control.

A middle sized house mortgage is about $1,300 to $1,800 for most people here. But with ownership, eventually you will either own it outright, or keep reducing the mortgage until your monthly payment is cheap.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@CanadianTraveller Or get swamped by endless periods of economic uncertainty.......like the last year !

No 'Jobs for life' anymore, you can't guarantee anything. Sadly.
CanadianTraveller · 56-60, M
@Picklebobble2 That is a factor. But if someone owns a home and they get into serious economic issues, there is value in the home that can be accessed. In an apartment, you are kicked out!

I’ve been babysitting my water pipes during this deep freeze but all-in-all I like having my house. It’s in a rural area and I see each sunrise and sunset unobstructed, hear the coyotes at night and watch the geese swarm the crop fields. It’s a good life
iamnikki · 31-35, F
I'd prefer a house but I can't afford one.
I also think I'd feel slightly safer in an apartment. Less entry points for a burglar.
In an apartment, things are fixed for me and yard is maintained.

I'm moving out soon and I really hope I have decent neighbors
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
House, with a yard for my dogs. Its hard to even find a house these days with a back yard.. It's just these new things coming up all over the place. Barely 1.5 metres from its neighbour.
TheOrionbeltseeker · 36-40, M
@Thevy29 I like house with all the yards 🏡😁

@Stereoguy A very big YES to not dealing with "noisy neighbours". I almost committed murder back in 2017.
4meAndyou · F
@Stereoguy You forgot to mention SMELLY neighbors...before smoking was banned in this building, a cigarette smoker lived below me. I never understood how one man could possibly stink so very, very badly.

Its been cheaper for me to live in a house than an apartment.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
I'd prefer a house, but the problem is houses are expensive, specially in the city (no, don't say move to a small town, I live in a small town and I hate small towns) so in most cases apartments are more affordable.

There is a bit of a caveat if you have pets though.

That being said, ideally I'd like to own a brownstone/townhouse/rowhouse.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
Well being that I'm single, I would prefer a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom townhouse. No need to spend money on a 4 bedroom/2.5 bathroom home.
CanadianTraveller · 56-60, M
I could never live in an apartment after living in a house. Sometimes apartments are more expensive actually.
summersong · F
I can’t wait until I can move out of an apartment and into a house.
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
I have a house. It's so much better than an apartment.
