I'd prefer a house, but the problem is houses are expensive, specially in the city (no, don't say move to a small town, I live in a small town and I hate small towns) so in most cases apartments are more affordable.
There is a bit of a caveat if you have pets though.
That being said, ideally I'd like to own a brownstone/townhouse/rowhouse.
