People who live in America and don't tip because they feel the people who work for tips should find a better job

Or because they feel the company should pay them more instead of having people tip since that's how they do it in other countries. First of all, I don't think they realize in those other countries that they charge for water, and the food is more expensive than it is here in the states. If they started doing that here, but got rid of tipping and paid their workers better. The people who complain about tipping would complain about their bill going up.

The people who don't tip are the same people who always want help from their friends. Always need a ride, money, or help moving or picking something up. But anytime their friend's need help, they'll never help them since they're selfish and don't want to help anyone but themselves. I bet sometimes they'll even agree to help, until the time comes and than they'll say "I'm sorry, I don't feel like helping anymore. Find someone else"

What makes me mad is when the management takes the tip and doesn’t pass it on to the wait staff 😠
Sweetguy024 · 36-40, M
@AbbySvenz very true. It should go to the person doing all the work. If it's a takeout tip than it should go to the crew since they all worked together. If it's a restaurant/server situation than yes, the server who did all/most the work gets the tip
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@Sweetguy024 I had an uncle who would put the tip under his plate when ready to leave. His reasoning was that he thought the people would cleaned up the mess afterwards would find it and that they were more deserving than the waiter.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@AbbySvenz pretty sure that's supposed to be illegal, especially if they pay "service wages" instead of minimum wage
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
It never seems to bother business if they have to put prices up if they want a better profit.
Why should it be acceptable for folk to do their job + in order to take home a wage they can live on ?

You can't feel proud of ending involuntary slavery for one generation, and then create an economy that relies on voluntary slavism........that's a nonsense !
Every other nation figured that out
Sweetguy024 · 36-40, M
@Picklebobble2 well it's technically not slavism since even without tips you're still getting paid something. May not be a livable wage, but if I remember correctly slaves didn't get paid a dime. And if people don't mind paying 5 dollars for water along with another 3/4 dollar increase per entree for their order to help pay the wage increase like in European countries. Than yes, they could get rid of tips and companies pay livable wages
Skoolschool · 31-35
Okay, so the tip is essentially why they get paid so less for the hourly wage. If those who worked in positions where tips are allowed had an hourly wage then they'd get paid more than management...some probably do anyway.

I've worked where the hourly was decent and was told not to accept tips for any reason. Customers still stuffed bills in my pocket.

It's about tracking the dollar one makes. Even filing taxes you're supposed to report your tips, the documented and undocumented. We pay for water and sewage thus why they dig up the ground and place those giant pipes in it. That isn't free and has nothing to do with it.

Those who don't tip are either ignorant of how much the person's hourly wage is or they just don’t have it. At the end of the day, the tip is not a guarantee so the possibility of what one can make in an hour varies. It's really about preventing one from earning too much.

If everyone knew they could make a decent living without a college degree how do you think that would affect the educational process?
You have no idea what you are talking about . Ending tipping and demanding profits /wealth are split in a manner that such practices are not required/expected is not something that will destroy the global economy
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Sweetguy024 There's no need to raise prices.
Jimmy2016 · 61-69, M
@Sweetguy024 Never been to Casa Bonita. Heard the food sucked...........
Sweetguy024 · 36-40, M
@Elessar if they increase wages they'll have to get that money somewhere. The corporate managers sure as hell don't want it to come out of their pay
I tip generously when I’m in a restaurant but not very often for takeout.
I tip as a token of appreciation for good service.
Handing me a bag and taking my payment doesn’t qualify as service.
Sweetguy024 · 36-40, M
@Onestarlitnight I agree with that. I feel takeout is like drive thru places, and they usually don't get tipped
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
I'm American and I always tip nicely.
Sweetguy024 · 36-40, M
@Nitedoc well thank you, people like you are greatly appreciated!
jehova · 31-35, M
Is it the customers fault you arent paid a living wage. No your employer only paying u minimum wage (possibly less) and redirecting the remainder of a "livable" wage onto the customer isnt fair either. I cant afford to tup bc the server is making more than i do in tips than i do on salary. Making the consumer foot the bill bc the employer wont isnt fair to the wait staff. Dont blame the customer blame the employer and system. People will always complain. Income inequality is the problem not the customer not being able to afford to tip
jehova · 31-35, M
@Sweetguy024 and i dont order delivery or est out bc i know i cant afford it but if tipping is required it should be included in the bill not be implied as a requirement. As yet another burden on the worker. Also unless its exceptional service why should i have to tip.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Sweetguy024
if you can't afford to tip you shouldnt eat out/get delivery
No,.if you can't pay your employees you shouldn't do business. If the bill is X one should pay X.
jehova · 31-35, M
@Elessar i pay the bill but tipping only allows the employer to xploit their staff
Elessar · 26-30, M
Non American here, maybe workers should demand a better pay from their employers and not from the customers? Tip culture is garbage.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Sweetguy024 Last I checked prices in America aren't any lower than here in Europe
Sweetguy024 · 36-40, M
@Elessar idk everything was really expensive when I was over there. The euro was worth more than the dollar back than too. That was back in 2017
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Sweetguy024 Depends where you went, if you were caught in a tourist trap then yeah prices are higher, otherwise not. A bottle of water anyway is around €1.50, even if you paid for it you'd still spend significantly less than you'll normally leave as a tip.

Paying employees is a duty of the employer, and it is in literally every business, not a duty of the customer.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
I completely believe restaurants and other jobs should remove tipping and pay a living wage to all employees.

If you can't stay in business, maybe you shouldn't be in business.

If you can't afford to eat out when people are paid properly, maybe you shouldn't eat out.

I'll shout that all day long and if it ever came to it, I would vote for it.

But right now, we live in a world where a lot of service staff isn't paid fairly. I want to end tipping, but not tipping isn't going to send anyone a message. Management won't give two craps.

So until laws change, I will tip. If I can't afford tips, I don't eat out (or uber or doordash or grubhub or any of it)
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
I always tip usually 20% and I live in the USA.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Customers get small cups of coffee and no refills and smaller portions etc too. Something like a soft drink can be expensive especially in tourist areas
itsok · 31-35, F
I find fault with everything you’ve said here, other than that people should tip in environments where it’s currently normal.
SW-User
In my country they don't charge for tap water.
Sweetguy024 · 36-40, M
@SW-User when I went to Europe the restaurants would bring out water in a pitcher along with glasses and charge us about 5/6 euros for it
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Sweetguy024 Congratulations, you were caught in a tourist trap. Not even the most prestigious restaurants here in Venice will charge you more than €2 a bottle.

And anyway you'll hardly tip €6. Even if water was sold at $10, but you didn't have to tip, you'd still spend less than you currently do to offset American "employers"' miserable pays.
SW-User
@Sweetguy024 oh dear. This doesn’t happen here though
1490wayb · 56-60, M
there is no clear tipping process\procedure...much too confusing
The people who complain about tipping would complain about their bill going up.
Let me get my tiny violin ... the fact that prices would obviously rise to merely have the employer join the rest of the damn economy and pay more so that gratuities are resigned to history ... is not a compelling argument against doing precisely that

It's not the only global norm the US needs to integrate either
Sweetguy024 · 36-40, M
@BlueGreenGrey I wouldn't mind if they got rid of tipping but raised the delivery fee 5/10 dollars or added a 15 percent increase to the total bill to help pay my wages
jehova · 31-35, M
@Sweetguy024 i work salary and wish i were paid enough. Im not prolly never will b everyones in that boat get over it. Ive had to
