Yeh, they've hiked up the prices, sometimes tripling their figures. And you know we're not hurting that bad. They're just taking advantage of the situation with covid and everything else, using it as an excuse to drain us dry. It's not right.

Woolworth’s? May I ask where you live please? @Gusman
Gusman · 61-69, M
@jackjjackson Australia. Woolworths - not related to the US Woolworths
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Got it. Thank you. @Gusman

Supermarkets arnt to blame, inflation is... they are just passing on their inflated cost onto the customer , which is the way it should be
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@Gusman So?
Gusman · 61-69, M
@sunsporter1649 So? Obscene is what it is.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@Gusman I agree, all the taxes they pay is obscene, drives prices thru the roof
CestManan · 46-50, F
Oh yeah. What is interesting though is some products that I buy - some have almost doubled in price yet some remain untouched.
Overall though my monthly grocery bill has gone up at least 25% even though my diet is mostly unchanged.
I do keep records of what I spend so I know I am not just imagining things like I usually do.

@Gusman I mean one tries to cut back, buy generic, stock up when on sale, but only so much can be done.
The real reason inflation even exists is to devalue whatever savings people have.
I never even realized that until I was in a position where I could actually have a savings account.

@CestManan At least loans are devalued as well huhuhu

Actually most of it has to do with the cost of diesel here. Trucks transport all of it to our stores. When gas / diesel goes up, the drivers have to do the same to make ends meet, and they pass their costs to the store, who passes it onto the consumer.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@TallMtnMedic They always use that excuse but it should not jack up the price of goods THAT much.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M

@CestManan Diesel has went from $3.642 to $5.362 for 125 to 300 gallons depending on the size of the truck per AAA. Also include $0.85 per mile for a gas surchange.
Meanwhile semi drivers can barely afford to drive as it is.
Keep in mind Wyoming and surrounding states are facing a diesel shortage and this us where a majority of our diesel is produced.
In November 2021, the Environmental Protection Agency announced new regulations governing methane emissions from oil and gas production, transmission, storage, and distribution that would cost more than $1 billion a year.
Last spring, Biden signed a resolution that overturned Trump administration reforms to EPA oil and gas rules. This resolution will worsen energy poverty, reestablish burdensome regulations, and have a disproportionate impact on small businesses.

Same here. Some products have nearly doubled in price
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Gusman And a produce seller told me 10 years ago he could buy kiwi fruit for 5-6 cents each and bring truckloads to Walmart, maybe double the price to them and they would never sell them for less than 50-60 cents each. I don’t buy much produce from them. They would rather let some things rot and throw away rather than sell at a reasonable price or discount it so it would be sold before spoiling. I have seen fruit flies swarming bins of melons because of that
Gusman · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti Every time I visit the supermarket, there is always an employee throwing produce into the large bins.
Greed is the worse. I sometimes wish these super corporation would go bust or the top executives would be imprisoned.

@Gusman there are people here who go dumpster diving and it’s unbelievable how so much gets thrown away. Some of the produce in the videos looks just as fresh or even fresher than what I have seen in the store. But it’s not just produce or refrigerated items, one couple found so much in a dumpster they couldn’t take it all and called another person to get the remaining stuff. They got at least 2 dozen tins of peaches, household items and candies etc too Their truck was full
Spoiledbrat · F
It's more than that here but it's partly due to the minimum wage hike.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Spoiledbrat I am speaking specifically about their whole bean decaf coffee. It went from about $12 to $20
Spoiledbrat · F
Yeah some things have really jumped up. I only buy food that"s reasonably priced and I don't drink decaf. Whew @samueltyler2
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Spoiledbrat decaf is really not that much more than regular. I buy my espresso beans at Wegmans, those started at $12 and now $16 for a kilo.

Something’s gotta give 🫤
Elessar · 26-30, M
I doubt. I don't see anywhere enough people determined to pressure their governments to put a check on corporations' profits in this period.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@CestManan Especially government greed
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
A number of factors have contributed to the rise in food costs: A deadly avian flu has meant fewer eggs in the United States, a severe drought in Brazil slashed coffee crops and the war in Ukraine led to a spike in wheat prices in the spring.
As countries began to recover from the pandemic, demand for gas started to increase again and could not be met due to a shortage in supply
Russia and Ukraine are among the world's top exporters of wheat and maize. But Russia has blocked Ukrainian food exports,
As of May 2022, there were 200 nuclear reactors permanently shutdown worldwide. The United States recorded the largest number of shutdowns [40]
Add up the effects of random world events, a huge pandemic, a war on a major food exporting country and a poorly timed decision to replace nuclear reactors with eco friendly alternatives and you have a bit of a disaster on your hands.
