Two actually….I got to see Bob Marley in concert on his Babylon By Bus tour. The music, the crowd…everyone was happy…dancing in the aisles. There was a vibe was unlike any I’ve ever felt at a concert.
I worked security for a B.B. King concert. I’m a huge Blues fan and he’s one of my absolute favorite performers. My post was corner of stage…best spot in the whole venue. He was amazing! After the show my post was outside his tour bus. He was very gracious, and chatted with me for about 15 minutes.
Korn opening for Metallica, NYE 1996, San Jose CA.
Korn got into a fist fight just 45 minutes into the set, and after security dragged them off stage Metallica came out almost 2 hours early and played for damn near 7 hours including a double encore after midnight.
@AlittleBitGenX I was thinking about it. And I think it might have been the midnight countdown…as I recall one of the stage hands was out of position in the overhead walkways and got caught in one of the pyrotechnics. Didn’t see it happen myself, but heard about it the next day
Concert No. 2. Summer, 1976. Foghat/ Opening for Rush.🤘 The weekend school let out for the summer, I had to spend 3 days in jail. Got busted for illicit smoking substances, and the judge, along with my lawyer, were family friends, so i got off lightly. While doing my 3 day stint, I read the novel, Papillon, by Henri Charrière, cover to cover. (About jail break from a Penal Colony in French Guiana.) Cover to cover. My friends, sympathic to my incarnation, had managed to score a handful of tickets to the upcoming Rush concert at MSU, Friday, the end of June. Up until then, I had only seen one concert, supposed to have been Jim Croce, but was substituted by Cheech and Chong, due to Jim's untimely death. But I digress.
So my first Rock concert, at 17. Rush! I had been given two tickets for myself and a possible date, so I had a lovely prospect in mind, but given my recent brush with the law, and my party reputation, convincing the parents of said beauty, would prove challenging. Angie MacClure had just turned 16, and was Developing nicely. (Smiles) We didn't Lol back then. 😆
Mid-June. A day at the lake beach, WildCat Creek. Blanket. Cooler full of beer, fm radio tuned to 98.8. Rush, playing of course. 😎 Angie two blankets over. I was smiling, and making eye contact, Figuring out when I might make my move, and ask her to the concert. She had just broken up with her boyfriend, and one of my brother's friend, Bird. He was a cool dude who got the nickname from his badass Pontiac Firebird, And the fact that he wore a Phoenix around his neck, and whenever you hit him up, he'd say, "Yo!" And flip you "the bird." Angie was feeling pretty rough about the breakup, and subtly trying to act nonchalant, and ignore Bird and his boys parting down beach. So I got up, pulled a couple of Bud's from my cooler, and invited myself on Angie's blanket. We made decent small talk, and seemed to hit it off and i asked her to the concert. She said she'll ask her folks, but yes. Still, her eyes kept glancing at Bird. I told her, she should go talk to him. But she was being stubborn and of course, a proper southern girl would never make the first approach, after a breakup.
Castles made of sand, fall in the sea, eventually. That very night, Bird got drunk, and wrapped his car around a telephone pole at high speed. Angie was beyond devastated. Blaming herself, in utter tears for days on end. Inconsolable. She told me she just couldn't go out with me to the concert, and i understood, but acted macho, and said something stupid and insensitive, being an ass. I tried to apologize, but the damage was done. I lost her.
Concert day. I had given my extra ticket to a cool rocker chic friend of mine who was elated, for she had missed the opportunity. Getting ready for the show, a few beer's and some smoke, my friends arrived at my house and we partied. Thinking about sneaking some adult beverages into the show, i knew i couldn't get away with more than one beer, so i chose a bottle of Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill.
Now how am I going to get this past security? My mom, being a cool mom, gave me an empty pint bottle of tequila to pour some of the wine into. That'll do! Off we went to the the MSU stadium for the show. Standing in a line from hell, my friends and I passed around a smoke or two, and the line slowly moved forward. I was mid-sentence in a story about my stint in jail with my friend Patti, when out of nowhere, this chic, Becky, (friend of Angie's) comes up to me and says, "Kelly! I Hate Your Guts!" I turn around and "Smack!" A slap in the face that was seen and heard from way back! Dumbfounded, I was at a loss for words naturally. After that, everyone quickly forgot about the scene, as we approached the door. I made it inside without a hitch, and we found our seats and began to party as the crowd got settled in for the show. Foghat opened up, with Slow Ride, then cooly progressed into I Just Want to Make Love to You.
Just as Rush was about to come onto stage, I pulled out my wine in Tequila bottle from my pants, and tipped it up and guzzled. The guy behind me, slapped me on the back, said, "Dude! I gotta party with You!" So i passed him the bottle. (Wine in Tequila bottle secret, was never noticed. We were all stoned and drunk! Ruch entered the stage, and Rocked our asses off! Almost perfect night, it ended with an encore of Time Stands Still.😆🤪🎶😎🤘 [media=https://youtu.be/oZk0OOsglio]
Postscript. Angie married one of my friends from school, Nicky, and they live happily together still, owners of a very nice Antique store, next county over. I've visited them whenever I'm there. She's still a beautiful southern belle, complete with that southern drawl that'll make any man melt.
@Montanaman You are an absolutely amazing story teller! Thank you so much for sharing memories with me. Glad to hear things ended well for Angie haha. What an awesome concert to have seen!
@AlittleBitGenX Smiles,☺️ 😆😎Thank you so much for that opportunity to share on your post. I should copy and paste both stories for my own page, lest i have to rewrite. 🤪👍✍️🤗🤗😎
First concert I ever went to. Way way way way back in the early 80s. Black Sabbath in Seattle. Memorable because they recorded parts of that concert for a Live album.
@icedsky I saw Black Sabbath in 76......Front row center stage standing up against the stage. Back then, they didn't have a security barrier and security guards in front of the stage.
Harry Styles 2022 july. He sounded amazing, but he stopped a concert to check on a fan...at that moment i understood why some throws bras on stage🤣 amazing human being, such a positive crowed, everyone stood the whole time and sang along, went nuts on the band that opened for him even tho no one knew who they are. It gave me that feel good energy exactly a month before my surgery.
Before that my fave was Bryan Adams. I cried🤷♀️amazing voice, lovely human being
🤔...........To many to list all of them. Here's some.........First concert I went to, was Alice Cooper Billion Dollar Babies tour 73 at 14 years old..........Pink Floyd WYWH Tour in 75 and then I saw 89 Tour.............The Plant Page Tour I saw 3 times in 95-96.......The Stones tours x4......Neil Young X4 CSNY X2......Rod Stewart X3............and many many more...........
There are 2. The first and the most recent, still a lifetime ago, was Marshall Tucker Band in VA Beach at the Boathouse. I was drinking beer in "the beer garden" (21+) and my wife, who was not 21 yet, was front and center stage enjoying some fine Southern Rock. Doug Grey was into a set about life on the road, how a man can get lonely, (This Old Cowboy) and inviting random attractive ladies from the audience to join him after the show. He focused on my wife, front row, center stage and motioned for her to come on up, or back, whatever the notion. She made her way upon stage and i was interestingly amused and watched this unfold. (The beer was cold and it must have been 90 degrees inside so, i just ordered another. Just as she reached his hand, the spot where she Was standing, front row, center stage, a commotion broke out. The big ceiling fan that was above, started wobbling and suddenly fell down towards the floor, as the crowd scattered, the band played on. Luckily, no one was hurt, and security quickly roped off the area in question. My wife returned to the audience section and I finished my beer and joined her. Mentioning that was good timing 😌 🤪😎 I asked her why Doug had said to her on stage, and she said that he took that falling fan as an omen, noticing her diamond wedding ring. I laughed and smiled and kissed her madly, as "Can't You See," cued up. [media=https://youtu.be/Mx6kzgIrxhY]
Dead Can Dance in 2012, I don't know why but I remember how I totally didn't expect security checking us and when they did I was a bit thrown off balance. There were crowds pushing on us and everything felt chaotic and overwhelming for a while. We also had a train back home right after the gig and weren't sure if we didn't have to leave earlier because of that.
Overall, all gigs I've been to were somewhat underwhelming. I think that crowds are taking away LOADS from the experience because they distract me and make me nervous. I just can't relax and let my guard down with so many people around.
@AlittleBitGenX Yeah, people are overwhelming and the music often underwhelming because of distractions and sometimes not that good sound system 😅, that's how I meant it.
The Beatles, August 12, 1966, in Chicago. The screaming was so loud I didn't know what songs they did until I read it in the newspaper the next day. I have a Beatles' book where you can see me in the audience!
@StarsMISaligned Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Tour in 98 at Red Rocks................I also saw them play at Fiddlers Green and at McNichols Arena on the 95 tour............Awesome Shows!!!
kiss in 2019 the only concert i have ever attended where it the end i had no voice + loudest concert i have been to but i was sitting pretty much at the side of the stage where the Pyro was going off
Theres been a few for varying reasons! But, i'll go with U2 in Liverpool on the War tour...just before they became the biggest band on the planet. 1 was 15. I went with a group of friends from school. We hired a mini bus....No grown ups!! It was an amazing gig and a real bonding exercise for us as pals. Great night.
Bob Dylan showed up an hour late and was incomprehensible, preachy. But Jeff Beck was even more special - he showed up four hours late and then the cops drove us all out of the theater afterwards with tear gas, it being too late for a show. Good fun. When reggae sun splash came to Hawaii, there were hundreds of cops there putting the public in cuffs and showing who's really Jah in Honolulu. Ah. Culture.
Performing in every concert I perform in is a "trip" and memorable. I went to see the Glenn Miller band which was reorganized in about 1955, there was a car show and the concert, both were amazing.
@AlittleBitGenX Yes, amazing, but, interestingly, it isn't really the applause that I crave, it is the ability to make people happy. We play a lot of senior citizen housing, a Fireman's home, preschools, etc. They crave entertainment, and we provide it. As a trombonist, I am not usually a featured player, usually play background stuff, so in this way, not your typical exhibitionist, at least not with my music, images may be a little different, LOL😈
The only concert I've ever been to, really, was to see Tori Amos when she was in town sometime in the mid-to-late '90s. It was a great performance, but honestly nothing especially memorable other than I don't have anything else to compare it to.
Saw Nickelback at Darien Lake about 8 yrs ago. They appeared on stage just as we were leaving and I was so excited because they were my favorite band growing up. It was a dream come true
@AlittleBitGenX I'm coming to accept that it may be all that is left in this life. hence my responses to a post that asked If there was anything keeping you from wanting to die.
In 1980, when I was 14, I saw The Buzzcocks at Brown Alumni Hall in Providence, RI. They sounded amazing. And it's one of the few times I saw my favorite band when they were in their prime and my favorite band.
K-ci and JoJo was my only! I’m not into concerts, but a friend bought us tickets as a surprise and they’re my fav singers so I went. The start of it was the old Jodeci which was nice, but I prefer it just K-ci and JoJo.
@AlittleBitGenX It was the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, GA. :3 I was a junior in high school and they were (and still are) one of my favorite bands ever, so it was really exciting! :)
Gonna have to be TOOL in Oklahoma City at the Ford center during the 10,000 Days tour. Had a hit of acid before it started and ended up dancing with the lasers flying around 😎
The first concert I ever went to, when I was about 10. The Halle Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli. I can remember every work that was played, I loved three of them, and I was hooked for life.
Went to see Yes in 2008 in Toronto. My ticket seats were not near the stage but a concert host asked if we wanted to get closer as they opened up an isle near the stage. It was perfect...right in the middle. I remember feeling every bass note go through me as my hero Chris Squire played his Rickenbacker. Man!!!!! It was tops for me!!
