How should educational progress be measured? What might replace exams?

Practical and theoretical. Yet exams per say should never be replaced.

Problem comes in on how any conduct the exams. Written exams is only good for theoretical.

Now how could this be implemented is totally a different question.

With budget cuts it's simply impossible to implement.

I might add, cooperative exams on top of that. Yet that would cost even more. The first two should be a beginning though.

I remember once in college we were assigned teams on a project. The head of each team were the ones that did well on both the practical tests as well as the theoretical tests.

The grade was assigned to the whole team based on certain standards completed. It was our final exam.

Me being a tutor in the lesser subjects of course I was a team's head.

There's knowledge and practical application. A person can solve all kinds of formulas but may not be able to solve problems with it. While others may do terrible with formulas yet build great things with the knowledge. So two kinds of tests.

@Livingwell sort of my response with less detail.

Well, tests don’t flunk themselves. They measure the aptitude to recount information, or think on your feet. They might even request you to write something cohesively.

How you learn is up to you. The teacher is just there to represent the material.

The only viable alternative is assessment of course work, and that is used alongside formal examinations, but this does not test the ability to retain information and how to apply it to solve problems.

A corollary is that although examinations are not perfect, their results are used as entry qualifications for higher education, training or employment. So it would be difficult to see a fair replacement for that, especially as the applicant may need move to another part of the country to use those qualifications.

🤷‍♂seems fine to me. Learn new things, then test what you were taught. If you retained most of the information you pass.

Alot of things require a written and physical test so its not like you just write and exam and expect to be a cop or an astronaut, construction worker etc.
Exams, oral, written, multiple choice, etc are by no means perfect, but they're the best tool we have for measuring educational progress.

Giving students a task to complete and then explain their thought process.

Nothing. Exams indicate the level of mastery of the information each student has achieved. Libs want to do away with tests because their minions don't do very well on them.

Any form of measuring academic progress , just like any form of measuring intelligence , is racist . That’s what I’ve been told .
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@AthrillatheHunt What sort of person would tell you nonsense like that? Someome jealous of others brighter or better educated than him or her self?

Exams are fine imo but certain education systems and subjects should be reviewed for content imo 😏

Back to the traditional hunting parties?

Unfortunately, exams are still the best way to determine how much a child has retained.
You already did stop the exams. And the outcomes aren't in sync with the science.
