We can eat tomato without cooking, what about others

DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Dad was a fairly good naturalist and grew many things. He even taught me all three along with potatoes are of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). No I didn't know the biological name, just the common name.

He actually grafted potatoes and tomatoes once.

Hard to say exactly when I learned it from him. He had so much knowledge to give about plants. Heck he even grew a guava tree in the desert. That's unusual by itself.

Yet grafting he as well told me about at a young age.

The main difference between fruits and vegetables comes down to whether they are classified by science (botany) or by cooking (culinary use).
Fruits develop from the flower of a plant and contain seeds.Vegetables come from other parts of the plant, such as roots, stems, leaves, or bulbs
Tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers are technically fruits in science because they have seeds and grow from flowers, but people cook and eat them as vegetables

its all the same to me
@GoFish Really !?
GoFish ·
@valobasa4ever yeah labeling them this or that doesn't change what they are lol
@GoFish

hunkalove · 70-79, M
When John Olinger did them.
@hunkalove O gosh!.
Not anymore. Please. 🙏
SleepingWithGhosts · 46-50, M
When I was like 5.
Donotfolowme · 51-55, F
I still eat them as veggies
When I learned vegetables don't exist. It's all fruit, berries nuts, bulbs and something else.
LordShadowfire · 51-55, M
@greensnacks Both the word vegetable and the word fruit have very vague definitions.
Sapio · 51-55, M
I learned about tomatoes being a fruit when I was a young boy. The others I learned about in my 20s.

@Entwistle Correct. But I still can't peel bananas with my feet. :(
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@Sharon At least you have tried!
Hmmm .... they are not.

The words "fruit" and "vegetable" are legal terms and which they are defines how the edible part of a plant is treated with regards to taxes and trade laws.

Like tomatoes are a vegetable based on a 1893 United States Supreme Court ruling that tomatoes should be classified as vegetables for trade and tax purposes. The court based the ruling on how people commonly used tomatoes.
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
You mis-vegetabled three vegetables.
@Longpatrol No edit option .

Sorry. :-( ;-)
ABCDEF7 · M
When I learnt humans are classified as animals in biology.
@ABCDEF7 🥂
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is not using it in a fruit salad.
@newjaninev2 Wow. 🥂
Like 20 seconds ago but I still don't understand how a bell pepper is a fruit
MethDozer · M
@PetalsOfLilac It contains seeds and is xeveloped from a polinated flower.
Delilah5 · F
Many moons ago in fourth grade.
@Delilah5 🥂
TexChik · F
I don't know, but I learned that cutting a bell pepper in half (red), cleaning out the seed and veins , and then stuffing it with my husband's tuna salad and eating it is almost better than sex. Its so good!
@TexChik

That's a very delicate description. ;-) 🤎

Thank you.

They're vegetables to me, I don't care what other people think.
I didn’t know about bell peppers.
@Mamapolo2016

Learned it recently.

🙏
LordShadowfire · 51-55, M
Tomatoes, I learned as a child. The rest of them, I learned as an adult.

The thing is, if tomatoes are a fruit and potatoes are a vegetable, then this is a salad:
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
It's common knowledge.
@MarkPaul 🥂
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
Same with avocados, olives, zucchini, squash and many more. It's what defines a fruit. Its the seed pod for the plant that grew it. A vegetable is the plant
lissah · 36-40, F
I dont remember when. It's not so significant that i remember the date.
@lissah 🙏
There are many more.... But how does it matter. If it's edible, you eat it the way you want.

MethDozer · M
Being a fruit doesn't negate something from being a vegetable. Vegetable is an arbitrary culinary terms for plant matter used as food that isnt a seed, nut, or grain.

They arent fruits inteadnof vegetables, they are vegetables that happen to also be a fruit
@MethDozer

Gosh !

I just asked this question only for fun.

Anyway, thank you for the valuable information.
