When did you learn a tomato, capsicum (bell pepper), and brinjal (eggplant) are fruits instead of vegetables?

The main difference between fruits and vegetables comes down to whether they are classified by science (botany) or by cooking (culinary use).
Fruits develop from the flower of a plant and contain seeds.Vegetables come from other parts of the plant, such as roots, stems, leaves, or bulbs
Tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers are technically fruits in science because they have seeds and grow from flowers, but people cook and eat them as vegetables

When I was like 5.
When I learned vegetables don't exist. It's all fruit, berries nuts, bulbs and something else.
LordShadowfire · 51-55, M
@greensnacks Both the word vegetable and the word fruit have very vague definitions.

I learned about tomatoes being a fruit when I was a young boy. The others I learned about in my 20s.

@Entwistle Correct. But I still can't peel bananas with my feet. :(

@Sharon At least you have tried!
Hmmm .... they are not.

The words "fruit" and "vegetable" are legal terms and which they are defines how the edible part of a plant is treated with regards to taxes and trade laws.

Like tomatoes are a vegetable based on a 1893 United States Supreme Court ruling that tomatoes should be classified as vegetables for trade and tax purposes. The court based the ruling on how people commonly used tomatoes.

When I learnt humans are classified as animals in biology.
DesiDudeJ04 · 31-35, M
We can eat tomato without cooking, what about others
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is not using it in a fruit salad.
Like 20 seconds ago but I still don't understand how a bell pepper is a fruit
MethDozer · M
@PetalsOfLilac It contains seeds and is xeveloped from a polinated flower.
TexChik · F
I don't know, but I learned that cutting a bell pepper in half (red), cleaning out the seed and veins , and then stuffing it with my husband's tuna salad and eating it is almost better than sex. Its so good!
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
They're vegetables to me, I don't care what other people think.
I didn’t know about bell peppers.
LordShadowfire · 51-55, M
Tomatoes, I learned as a child. The rest of them, I learned as an adult.

The thing is, if tomatoes are a fruit and potatoes are a vegetable, then this is a salad:

Same with avocados, olives, zucchini, squash and many more. It's what defines a fruit. Its the seed pod for the plant that grew it. A vegetable is the plant
lissah · 36-40, F
I dont remember when. It's not so significant that i remember the date.
MethDozer · M
Being a fruit doesn't negate something from being a vegetable. Vegetable is an arbitrary culinary terms for plant matter used as food that isnt a seed, nut, or grain.

They arent fruits inteadnof vegetables, they are vegetables that happen to also be a fruit
