I grew up with them.
As a young adult started using a puff/bodywash instead of washcloth and bar soap in the shower.
I still use a washcloth to wash my face in the sink or when traveling/camping.
I feel like soap doesn't properly rinse off with just hands and water.
When I have guests stay over I always leave out a washcloth along with hand and body towel.

@Starcrossed Yes ! That was part of the conversation, too. 🤭

@Starcrossed thats me lol

Most of my life, washcloths. Frequently they were created by cutting up towels that were too proud to die but too ragged to dry. Now gloves and body wash.
I don’t recall ever discussing washcloths with anyone.

@Mamapolo2016 I thought that I was the only one who gave towels a second act. I guess we grew up not around folks who believed in duel usage of household items.
Mamapolo2016 · F
@Briggett “Make it do, make it last.”
bijouxbroussard · F
@Mamapolo2016 My parents, who were kids during the Depression, had a similar attitude.
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
I grew up with washcloths so have always used them.
Elessar · 31-35, M
Pretty much all the households have it here, though I'm not sure we're considered properly white 😵💫
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
With me washcloths are normal even for showers. Yet for some I have seen they use other things. Loofa sponges mostly. Yet even other things.
bijouxbroussard · F
@DeWayfarer Tbf, I got in the habit of using exfoliating gloves in the shower, which I really love. But I still use a washcloth on my face.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
Lol... I just use a liquid soap on my hands. No washcloth.
This was actually a topic of conversation years ago in my house. My dad prefers using a washcloth and mom does not.

I think nearly all white people use washcloths in the shower. All my family does. If we visit friends they always lay out towels and washcloths.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@MoveAlong just reading all these comments and I thought I'd say, I think this may be exclusive to Americans. In the UK, the shower routine is questionable but not as much as France.
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
I used a washcloth growing up but as a single man I just use a bar of soap and body wash. A washcloth would be something else to wash. No need to create more laundry.
craig7 · 70-79, M
Yes,it was the norm in my family growing up,washcloths - which we called "flannels" here in Australia - were always in the bathroom.

I have never used a whitecloth, I mean washcloth, but my wife does and she is almost as white as I am.
I cant speak for all the Caucasians but I was always taught to use a wash cloth by my parents and grandparents.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
Haven't had a bath or used a wash cloth in eons. Wait, don't run off thinking your elders were right.
I shower. Don't even have a tub anymore at my age, only walk-in showers with handy grab bars and the world's best shower mat that both grips the shower pan and provides a rough, loufa surface for traction. And I use body wash instead of soap, which is easier to put on with hands than wash clothes, imho.

No washcloth. Soap and hands (face, pits, bits, torso, legs, bum), or shampoo and hands (for head and other hairy bits).
I don't use 'fancy' soap. I'm mindful that the skin always has a mix of good and bad bacteria and 'sterilising' using fancy soaps, body washes and many shampoos if over-used leaves skin less protected and more open to being a vector for infection(s).

Born in '52, I grew up with wash cloths.
As an adult in my mid 20s at the time, used a buff- puff, which I use today. During all these years, went through using a variety of soaps and body washes, and now in my 70s, go with Ivory soap, and buff-puff as needed for face and neck.

Idk about other white folks but I do use a washcloth now that I'm grown, but growing up it wasn't a thing in our household. I mostly use it to conserve soap and just move it lightly over my face then body. It's easy to over-exfoliate if I scrub too hard, especially my face.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
I'll use a washcloth when washing my face at the sink, but in the shower or tub I'll just use the bar of soap itself. SOMETIMES use a back-brush for my back. But pretty much just hands and either bar soap or a handful of moisturizing body wash.
Pfuzylogic · M
I stopped using washcloths around 12 when parents stopped personally supervising my hygienic habits. Soap is different, recently I used Cocoa butter and really enjoyed it but I try to avoid becoming ng cheap on my hygiene!
Punxi · F
I grew up with and still use two washcloths. One for my face the other for my body. This, after I exfoliate using a dry brush with beta- hydroxy.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I use washcloths when I shower at home.
If I take a shower in the locker room of a gym or pool, I don't usually bring a washcloth with me.

DrWatson · 70-79, M
Were you told that there was a particular "something else" that we use?
bijouxbroussard · F
@DrWatson I remember someone once telling me, "they just use their hands !" I thought the person was kidding.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@bijouxbroussard It's true lol
LavidaRaq · F
I may not be white , but I thought everyone used them. I use a Korean washcloth. Very exfoliating.
bijouxbroussard · F
@LavidaRaq I had always assumed that everyone used them, too. But I also started using exfoliating gloves, which are really good.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Since I tore a rotator cuff, I use a long handle scrub brush. When we were on the cruise, unused a face cloth instead.
No cloth on my face.
No cloth on my face.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
I've always used a flannel/washcloth and pack one when I go on holiday (or two if it's a longer break).
Wrenfern · 51-55, F
I used one of those exfoliating sponges to get my circulation going, but I had a wash cloth as a kid.
Poppies · 61-69, F
I use a washcloth during baths and showers but I think my husband usually doesn't.
softspokenman · M
Washcloths when I was growing up. A natural sponge and a washcloth as an adult.
ArtieKat · M
Sponge and bar of soap in the bath, same sponge but with liquid soap in the shower.
nonsensiclesnail · F
Thats not the norm, no.... as far as I know. maybe I'm one of the weird white girls.
JohnnySpot · 56-60, M
Do not use Ajax or Comet to wash your face.
bijouxbroussard · F
@JohnnySpot No, that’s not a concern.
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
I do not use them. Never have.
I rub the bar of soap over my body.

sciguy18 · M
Some white folks do and some don’t…
bijouxbroussard · F
@sciguy18 In fact, that’s what I’ve seen. But I wondered what a larger group of people thought.
sciguy18 · M
@bijouxbroussard I have both used them and not used them…
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
I use a flannel in the shower, a sponge in the bath.
Alyosha · 36-40, M
I use a bar of soap.
bijouxbroussard · F
@Alyosha Just directly on the skin ? (Sorry if that’s nosy)
Alyosha · 36-40, M
@bijouxbroussard Not at all. And yes, directly on the skin. If I need suds, I just twist the bar in my hand a few times.
tobynshorty · 51-55, F
Wash cloth or exfoliate pad
exexec · 70-79, C
We use them for baths and showers.
thisguy20 · 46-50, M
Bar of soap. Rinse off with water.
Harmonium1923 · 56-60, M
I use a wash cloth!
Blondily · F
I always use a washcloth 😆
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
I used to use a washcloth during baths. As I got older I just applying the soap with my hands.
I think most people just apply the soap directly in showers. I use a puff or whatever it's called.
I think the older white people are more prone to using bath clothes.

I use a loofah
Northwest · M
I have a natural loofah sponge, but you could shower with a white person and see what they do 😛
bijouxbroussard · F
@Northwest My Irish friend has washcloths in her bathroom. But her husband is Native American. Seriously, though, when I showered at the YWCA I never really paid attention.
Northwest · M
@bijouxbroussard Yes, it's not like I go around shower stalls checking out what they use to rub themselves down either 🤣
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
I don't think its a cultural thing, mostly an age thing.
bijouxbroussard · F
@JimboSaturn I don’t think so. Even young black people (at least those I know) use washcloths, exfoliating gloves, loofas.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Stopped using one decades ago.
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
Nope, don’t use them. 🫣

Spicy white and yes we do.
MethDozer · M
Yeah pretty much. Only our grandmas used them.
Qlwo working in the resort businesses only elderly people ever used or asked for them.
They dont really serve mjch purpose honestly. I get it back in the day when people typically bathed only once a week and just cleaned up witb a cloth and bowl of water in between. But in shower times hands work just fine

@bijouxbroussard my current place has just a shower stall. What an ordeal it is when I drop something in that damn shower
bijouxbroussard · F
@MethDozer I have a teak bench in my shower with a shelf that I keep my shampoo, conditioner, and gloves on. If I’m in a hurry, I stand, but in the evenings it’s cool to just sit under the water and relax.
MethDozer · M
@bijouxbroussard my shower doesnt even have enough room for that. I wish it did
