A single person making 3200.00 a month can’t get an apartment

My brother sailing the house. I have to get out. This is the third application I put in and 3rd time I was denied. I work 40hrs a week I can’t get a place to live. You have to have income 3 1/2 times of the rent. That’s 5350.00 a month and 63,000.00 a year. If I was making that I would buy a house.

3.5 times your rent? What do people who don’t do drugs spend money on?

@Jeffrey53 I don't know where you live, but in this area (Kansas City) there appears to be in an apartment building frenzy, with more in more new construction apartment complexes everywhere. A quick Zillow peek shows 250+ in the $600-$1,000 price bracket, 370+ in the $400-$800 range. Some in pretty hot downtown areas. I think this is typical through the heartlands from border to border.

My suspicion is that prices will come down even lower as supply outstrips demand.

@Heartlander I look for the cheapest, I don't make enough for 1400-1500 a month the rest is between 1700 and 2100 a month don't bother filling application for those

@Jeffrey53 :) maybe our building boom is in anticipation of people abandoning California and coming here where housing costs are a lot lower.

It's getting impossible to survive out here. That's why I still live with my ex fiance- neither of us can afford to rent a place alone.

Another twist to the cost of housing issue is that the tax system now seriously favors renting vs home ownership. With the higher standard deductions, mortgage interests and real estate taxes no longer give us an income tax advantage. Meanwhile, the landlord can expense everything: maintenance, interest, taxes, depreciation, etc.; resulting in lower rates for rent when compared to the cost of home ownership.

@Heartlander How much of your day do you spend thinking about taxes?
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@SW-User

Very little. But I do pay attention to economics and housing issues, and taxes are a big part of the housing issue.

It's bad most everywhere. I saw you mention Lancaster and I'm sort of familiar. It's all going to come crashing down on those who are renting their homes for way more than they're worth along with the management companies just looking to screw people. But that won't happen tomorrow.
To toss it out there, it's not a big place but a pretty cool building in Lake Hughes which might be a little drive but it's a nice area. Need 3K for move in at 1,300 a month. Good luck man. Something will come up.

No wonder there are so many people who are homeless there. Insane.

@SheCallsMeCrushDaddy California rents haven't gone up as much as most places in the country. I just checked a report. CA is up about .8%. Nevada, as an example, is up 36%. Idaho is like 50%. It's happening most everywhere. The market has to correct itself. It's unsustainable right now.

Ouch ... considering that the average monthly social security benefit for seniors is about $1,500, it looks like we're at the doorsteps of yet another financial crisis.
That’s how it is here in Washington also. My son is looking to move here snd it’s starting to feel impossible.

I'm truly sorry you're going through this. Since you shared a house with your brother, do you mind doing a house share with someone else who might be having trouble keeping up their payments? There are a few sites that advertise for roommates and house shares. This is just one of them.

@SW-User I have a dog most people don’t want animals
SW-User
@Jeffrey53 Well, all you can do is try. I needed a place to rent after I sold my house and it took me a little while but I finally found someone willing to rent to me with the dog.

Where is your brother planning on going when he sells? Does he not want to do a rental share with you again?

@SW-User thanks for that information about roommates.com

That is why a lot of people are moving out of California. U can buy a nice house with that in my area
Jeffrey53 · 51-55, M
@smileylovesgaming if I had money for a down payment I would buy a mobile home
Nayla · 51-55, F
Maybe prince Harry and his wife would rent out a room in their house to you. I've heard they are hurting for $
Jeffrey53 · 51-55, M
@Nayla lol

That sounds almost as bad as the Bay Area. Around here $3500 a month is the cost of a one-bedroom apartment.

@mysteryespresso I am in the suburbs I think. Not la or anything
@Jeffrey53 can you work from home and live far away in less expensive area?
Jeffrey53 · 51-55, M
@mysteryespresso I can’t work from home where I work
scabs · 51-55, T

Jeffrey53 · 51-55, M
@SheCallsMeCrushDaddy I would if I had another job
SunScreenKing · 51-55, M
Looks like there’s a part time job in your future.
Human1000 · M
Sounds like you need to be a border.
You could rent one of my houses, and have money left over for water and power.
