@hunkalove Manteno, actually.
hunkalove · 61-69, M
@SubstantialKick My grandfather died there. He was a guard.
stratosranger · M
@SubstantialKick Was there a general cookie cutter design for the architecture of these places? Because the one I knew in NY has the same exact look!
hunkalove · 61-69, M
I wonder how many SWers have lived there?
TheJagsman · 31-35, M
@hunkalove Haha are you suggesting most SWers need psychiatric help?
MeowsoliniReturns · 51-55, F
@hunkalove 99.99%
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
Bet a lot of torture went on in there....
JohnnySpot · 56-60, M
The one near where I live has laid in ruins for several decades, the police won't even go in without guns drawn.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@JohnnySpot why is that? Do people hang out in them?
JohnnySpot · 56-60, M
It was a huge multi large building facility in total ruins in a very dangerous area. Most of it has been torn down now and the "main strip" of this area has been cleaned up.
kodiac · 22-25, M
Almost all these kind of places hold so much bad karma you couldn't pay me to live there☠
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@kodiac Every time I drive by the state hospital here in my city, where horrendous torture was done on children from the age 3 & up for the MKULTRA program conducted by John W. Gittinger, I wonder how haunted those buildings are. There are plans to demolish the buildings and build a new state mental hospital closer to where I live. They say that it will be much smaller since they will only have about 100 beds for patients (there used to be about 3,000 patients till they started cutting down since the late 60s). The property of the state hospital will be sold for a business district and high density apartments and will pay for the building of the new hospital.

Wonder if it had underground tunnels so they could transport patients without others seeing the horrors of what the doctors had done to them.
stratosranger · M
@JohnnySpot They had underground tunnels in the abandoned facility where I grew up. Me and a bunch of friends explored them. It was an insanely stupid thing to do. We would on occasion encounter patients that were released on their own recognizance down there. We had one come running towards us in dark screaming his head off. We shot bottle rockets in his direction and ran back. Fortunately we had a master key that locked the fire door behind us. The movie “Joker” has some basis in reality for that time in New York state when funding for mental health services was drastically reduced. 10’s of thousands of patients were released on the streets to become homeless. But mistreatment of the elderly or infirm is nothing new for the Cuomos.
JohnnySpot · 56-60, M
The one by me was called "Eloise" a very large facility, abandon for decades, lawless, police did not patrol.

So pretty
smiler2012 · 61-69
{@thejagsman looks a grand building is it being used for other purposes now or is it derelict
TheJagsman · 31-35, M
@smiler2012 Plans are afoot for conversion into over 50 flats
The hospital closed down when a new facility was built adjacent to it. So if you do buy one of the flats, not only are you living in a former psychiatric hospital, but you've also got an active psychiatric hospital next door haha

@TheJagsman it is terrible you know in a way how grand buildings like that cannot be used more constructively rather than greed people convert to flats every derelict building that comes up for sale
TheJagsman · 31-35, M
@smiler2012 It seems to be where the money is, though I guess flats is better than student accomodation where the occupants are far more transient
I do agree though, some of these buildings could be put to better use

Just so long as it’s far from any population centers, which it appears to be.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
It's had to tell a bock by its cover.
arkod · 36-40, M
Impressive yet calm.
