Why is gaming such a big thing these days?

I don't totally get the appeal. I'd rather do something more productive or something I would at least benefit from.

It’s a hobby that requires good eye-hand coordination, strategy, puzzle-solving, exploration, managing resources. Some games are like movies that you play. People find that fun.

Not only as a culmination of audio and visual media, but as an engaging and reactive experience, video games have the potential to be the highest form of modern-day art. And despite our best efforts, human intelligence just hasn't caught up to video games yet. VR hitting mainstream will be a significant milestone in realizing the potential of implementing augmented "video games" in a productive corporate environment. There's a ton of money still on the table for the industry, but sadly most devs are content with settling for a quick buck in the mobile market. Video games are still in their infancy.

Games aren't like pacman and stuff anymore, any are like choose your adventure books, combined with movies. They're nearly photorealistic these days too.

The game I'm playing now is a hyper realistic horror and is more frightening than most movies I've seen.

@basilfawlty89 Yeah I noticed that. I guess that could appeal to some people, still doesn't seem like a strong enough reason to me tho especially considering how time consuming they are.

@basilfawlty89 Title?

I'm not really big on horrors (I just played a few but it's totally not my genre, I can't get myself to commit to finish them.. although lately I have this problem with pretty much everything), but since I have a cousin who was shìt scared from playing the first Amnesia I can always give out a little recommendation 🫠

@Elessar Layer of Fear 2023. It's a remaster of the original and sequel with two brand new stories and us vastly expanded. Plus it's UE5 and has raytracing so it's very realistic.

one could say that certain/many/but not all video games are interactive audio books that players get as much out of as other people reading books

5 hr Short (horror) Story- Little Nightmares

10 hour horror story, with a 20 yr/8 game legacy- Resident Evil: Village

50+ hr- history of the Old West -
Red Dead Redemption

A 15 yr 4 game series about Greek Mythology - God Of War

maybe being an 8 ft tall intergalactic soldier is more your thing-
Halo series is here for you

and for every one of these games there is 100 30 min to 2 hr games, and I haven't touched on VR games, or the fact that many jobs including the military are using the technology to train people for the job.

Yeah, to get good it takes a lot of time and then it takes up most of your time. It’s fairly genus of the manufactures but not great for people who would prefer a life
Elessar · 26-30, M
It always was, there's just less stigma now than for instance when I was a teen at admitting you enjoy it

Yeah, i think that's just maturing, and having your priorities in order.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I don't have time to game. I would rather do something productive any day.
Cloud7593 · 46-50, F
They're probably created to be addictive.
Ducky · 31-35, F
As a gamer myself, it’s fun! 🤩
mainvane · 61-69, M
yeah...keep it real
Workerbee · 31-35, M
Some people make good money from gaming/streaming that’s why.
Workerbee · 31-35, M
@Jexie that’s why I said some.
Jexie · 26-30, F
@Workerbee Fair enough. Tho I was talking mostly about the majority of people.
Workerbee · 31-35, M
@Jexie also fair to say the rest of the gamers think gaming is productive, do I think it is? No
tenente · 100+, M
never been my thing either 🤷‍♂️
