Why is gaming such a big thing these days?
I don't totally get the appeal. I'd rather do something more productive or something I would at least benefit from.

Everyone is different. What appeals to one will not to another.
Not understanding something or the situation that different people are in to appreciate the appeal of video games for them can hinder ones understanding.
For some it's a waste of time and others a simple distraction from their current stresses along with an unlimited list of other reasons and factors.
