Do you prefer driving manual or automatic cars? Why?

Manual.

Much listed below is all about control.

Driving you must be in control of the situation. That includes things as simple as the fuel situation. You can waste gas, just as easily as save gas.

Just rev up that tachometer in a low gear. Kind of fun though! 🙃

You don't want any control? Might as well ride the bus. That's easy.

I have driven many types of vehicles before though. Including motorcycles, double clutch and front end loaders in multiple situations.

Manual.

More control, better fuel economy.

The latter point certainly used to be so, but I don't know if modern automatics' efficiency is now comparable to the manual versions of the same cars.

More skill needed - why should I want to make motoring as lowly-skilled as possible?

A lot does depend on driving style of course. Habitually floor the accelerator in low gears, as if trying to drive a racing-car, or accelerate and brake hard between speed-bumps, and you can't expect to do anything but waste fuel. Though such habits are the hallmark of the inept.

I have driven both, including an automatic car I owned for a while.
Horse a piece, depends on what I'm driving and what I'm using it for.

I drive big 18 wheelers I driven automatics and manuals in them big rigs. Manuals are far more superior in power, control, traction, downshifting large heavyweight.

Take the same load with a into Montana, Colorado, Utah with a automatic I've almost crashed a few times.

So when ever I go into mountain territory. I drive a manual I'm able to control without over heating the brakes.

Manual. I love the feeling of full control. My first car was a 94 Toyota pickup 5 spd. Over the years I have owned a Rav 4 manual, miata 6 spd, and a 2005 dodge ram 3500 dually 6 spd. Most of the others cars I have owned have been automatic. My 2019 wrangler is an 8 spd auto. I'd rather have an inline 6 with a 5 spd. I drive both a 13 speed and an 18 speed for work.

New automatics change faster than a person and are more economic. Some people need to feel in control, and there is something in engine braking available with a manual gearbox. Not very pleasant in a traffic queue to keep working the clutch though. I guess it depends where you are driving.
I lack the focus to manage modern traffic, so fully automatic (as in self driving) would be the only option to get in a car on my own. But that's unaffordable, so public transport it is.
anoderod55 · 61-69, M
Automatic . Easer to drive in snow . Don't like having to row to get where i'm going . 🛻 😸
Lugwho · 61-69, M
I used to travel a lot for work, frequently driving hire cars. I preferred an automatic when I was driving abroad on the right hand side of the road. Just one less thing to have to think about.
exexec · 70-79, C
Automatic. I drove manual vehicles for years, and now I'm lazy and enjoy the ease of automatic. Plus, frequent knee surgeries and other ailments make automatics mandatory.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
Automatics have improved to the point were fuel economy and loss of power is no longer an issue. Back in the day it used to be a skill to handle a 5 or 6 speed gearbox. But in city or suburban traffic its just hard work now..😷
Manual,
Had a great one for years. Switched to an automatic for a while, now just let the Tesla self drive 98% of the time, beyond amazing piece of machinery.
calicuz · 56-60, M
Automatic these days, but manual was fun when I was young.
@MartinTheFirst I drive the big rigs. Driving manuals is easy once you get the hang of it.

The only difference from big rig to car. Big rigs you need to double clutch for higher gears
calicuz · 56-60, M
@MartinTheFirst

Yes, at my age it's about comfort as well.
HumanEarth · F
Stick is comfort 🤣🤣🤣
HumanEarth · F
Manual transmissions of course

One fun to drive

Two better on fuel

Three built out cast iron and stronger to handle more torque

Four they have give better traction to road when driving snow. Specially true in large vehicles like school buses, city buses, big trucks and 4X4 trucks over the automatic transmission.

Five automatic transmissions just plain boring
@HumanEarth You remind me of a dear friend with a similar mindset. He will always choose the more traditional way to do a thing—regardless of the extra time or effort involved. He refuses to concede to ”modern conveniences”. 😊
HumanEarth · F
I am your friend, your new friend that is

I'm very stubborn and don't take to change very well
I drive a manual but have no preference, I have driven both
I haven't had a manual in a long time but they are more fun to drive
faery · 31-35, F
Both for different reasons. Automatic is easier, but manual is fun.

Everyone should know how to drive manual.
ViciDraco · 41-45, M
Automatic. I've never needed the benefits of a manual. So automatic was just easier. Now that I only have one leg, I can still drive an automatic without any special modifications.
HumanEarth · F
Booo, trader 🤣🤣🤣
Ducky · 31-35, F
Automatic. Easier and safer. The latter for me, anyway, since they’re less stressful.
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
Just bought a manual and I’m loving it.
KatyO83 · 41-45, F
I always drove manual until a couple of years ago.

Now all three cars I have are automatic.

@KatyO83 I have a great job and only own one!
KatyO83 · 41-45, F
@Muthafukajones so I had one. But bf didn't have a car. Another friend was selling his wife's so I bought that and bf "borrowed" the other.

Then I inherited one that was my great aunt's. I'm still not sure I'm going to keep that long term. And definitely three in my name is daft. Bf should just take the mini.
I was taught both ways, but of course I found automatic easier.
It’s moot now, as I no longer drive.
@HumanEarth My mother enjoyed riding and was very good with horses. My earliest memories were when she’d rent a horse from the riding academy and stables. We’d ride along the beach, me sitting in front. 🥹
HumanEarth · F
Well there is always a free Amish buggy ride and free eggs if you ever showed up here.
@HumanEarth That actually sounds awesome. 😊
hunkalove · 70-79, M
I always preferred manual, but I haven't owned a car or driven in over 25 years.
TerminalChaos · 46-50, M
Automatic becomes I have spinal damage. It's painful for me to repeatedly push in the clutch.
Automatic, although I have both.
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
Automatic cars unless you are doing drag racing or off-roading and need the extra torque power honestly there is not that much difference in performance and a stick actually gets worse gas mileage however for some Vehicles the manual transmission is a better option simply for performance reasons like a Humvee or a dedicated sports car like a Ferrari but other than that an automatic transmission is perfectly fine and less hassle
Automatic. It's no fun moving at a snail's pace in a traffic jam driving up a steep road 20 feet at a time while working (and perhaps burning) a clutch
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I'd like to try automatic.
akindheart · 61-69, F
i can drive both but prefer automatic
Yourwildestdreams · 51-55, M
I enjoy a semi-automatic or automated manual transmission. Best of both in one transmission 👍
thepeculiarpanda · 36-40, M
I just prefer not driving honestly.
Achelois · F
I’ve never drove an automatic.
SaorUladh · 31-35, M
I've never driven an automatic
Cigarguy101 · 41-45, M
Manual, they are a lot more fun to drive
BigImo · 26-30, F
Automatic cos it's easier to go on my phone
WandererTony · 56-60, M
Manual. Its fast becoming a lost art !! 😏
Donotfolowme · 51-55, F
I prefer sitting next to him
ABCDEF7 · M
Manual for the thrill of driving, and automatic for the ease of driving.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Automatic now, I`m old and lazy.
thrash · 31-35, M
carpediem · 61-69, M
Day to day....automatic. Weekend muscle car screwing around....manual.
Katie01 · F
Umm I'm pretty sure all cars are manual. They can't drive themselves yet
Manual .. more control, better fuel economy
swirlie · 31-35
I prefer automatic because it keeps my hands free to drink coffee with one hand while texting my friends with the other.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
Automatic. I never learned manual.
Moneyonmymind · 31-35, M
I’ve only driven automatic
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
I like both
The convenience of an automatic
And the fun of a manual
