@samueltyler2 The Earth was known to be spherical by the ancient Greeks. First measured, as far as we know, by Eratosthenes in about 200 BC.

Columbus' expeditions started ten years after Nicolaus Germanus put the nautical mile on his map in 1482.

@ninalanyon why then was there such an uproar over the science in the 1400s about the flat earth?
I guess I have been re-educated now. I was taught, apparently incorrectly, that there was widespread fear that ships would fall off the edge.

@samueltyler2 Was there?
During the 20th century a string of prominent scholars, going back to Francis S. Betten in 1923, and including names as illustrious as Lynn Thorndike, Samuel Eliot Morison, E.G.R. Taylor, C.S. Lewis and Edward Grant, rejected the claim that medieval culture was dominated by belief in a flat earth.
This denunciation culminated in a 1991 book, Inventing the Flat Earth (Fig. 2), by medievalist Jeffrey Burton Russell, who sought to discover the historical roots of this insidious accusation, which he called the ‘flat error’ (defined as the “almost universal supposition that educated medieval people believed the earth to be flat”, p. xiii). Russell identified as culprits for the flat error the early 19th century writer Washington Irving, whose fictionalised biography of Columbus was taken as historical, and the erudite academic historian Antoine-Jean Letronne, whose scholarly essay on the cosmographical views of the Church Fathers was taken as definitive.

@supersnipe ohh right being born in the 90s (1991) no wonder i never saw a pump attendant
22Michelle · 61-69, T
@samueltyler2 I know it's a mistype/ autocorrect, but the idea you "tent a space" in your building just sounds so interesting.
JSul3 · 70-79
@saragoodtimes That's unfortunate because today's computerized engines adjust the air/fuel mixture based upon the octane level of the gas.
You are being scammed by the manufacturer. There is zero proof of engine damage using regular unleaded fuel, but I understand your concern. If you keep your auto past the warranty date, you can then enjoy additional savings by using regular or mid-grade fuel.

NerdyPotato · M
@QuietEd2019 in your second comment you said £149.9/litre 😉 That would be pretty bad...

@NerdyPotato ohh yes misplaced⚫️
QuietEd2019 · 31-35, M
@NativePortlander1970 what about British?
Miram · 31-35, F
It is incredibly cheap. I think my bills were less than 4 dollars a month. I want to make it zero by relying on better ecofriendly means.
carpediem · 61-69, M
Gas prices just went up. The cheapest place around now is at $4.19 per gallon for regular.
Ontheroad · M
$2.86 USD per gallon or $0.75 per liter.
mooncrest02 · 31-35, F
$4.20/gal
Samek · 36-40, M
@mooncrest02 I see what you did there! ;)
mooncrest02 · 31-35, F
@Samek no really the closest place to me is 4.20 a gallon. Lol
So because I need to put premium in my car I very routinely pay around 2-2.10 cents per liter. That would be almost 8 dollars a gallon for the Americans.
NerdyPotato · M
How do you all manage those prices?! In winter I use 70k gallons per month to warm my house and cook, which would be at least $20k with the lowest prices here. Are you sure those are gas prices and not gasoline ones? 😱
NerdyPotato · M
@QuietEd2019 oh, right... That's a bit weird indeed.
NerdyPotato · M
@mooncrest02 well, the question was about gas, not gasoline. Gasoline is liquid too, so calling that gas makes no sense.
mooncrest02 · 31-35, F
@NerdyPotato oh... im learning sm on here. Lol

Quimliqer · 70-79, M
1.47/L or in US gallons, $5.88/gal
acupaday · 46-50, F
$2.99/gallon
JSul3 · 70-79
In DFW. Regular unleaded $3.13 or less, depending on the station.
I use a store discount that gives me $1.00 off per gallon so above example would equate to $2.13 for me.
Update: prices lowered....$2.99.
