saw $3.60 for reg this morning, $4.72 for premium
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@saragoodtimes that is a huge difference. I once asked an honest auto technician if it really does any harm to the engine to not use premium. He told me that he had never seen such, but for peak performance premium is preferred.
saragoodtimes · F
@samueltyler2 my mercedes dealer said to only use premium. said reg can void the warranty and damage the engine
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@saragoodtimes they may say that, it was an independent auto technician telling me that. How would they even know which gas you used? It isn't my area of expertise, so I am only telling you what I was told. I guess we should see what Google says. I drive an EV, so it isn't a problem to me!
saragoodtimes · F
@samueltyler2 guessing they can tell the octane of he gas in the tank if you have a problem
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@saragoodtimes that maybe true, but would likely require a lab test.
A quick Google seems to agree with the technician I spoke with:

@samueltyler2 I don't pump my own gas. either Alan or the dealer fill it when it needs gas. the know what to put in the tank
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@saragoodtimes lol, in NJ we still.arent allowed to.
saragoodtimes · F
@samueltyler2 the last state in the country to have an attendant pump for you
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@saragoodtimes yes, in Oregon you have the choice.
QuietEd2019 · 31-35, M
@samueltyler2 cool that you drive EV I can’t wait to as well but I don’t have any options for home charging my parking space is over 25 meters from property and past two other properties 😞
QuietEd2019 · 31-35, M
@samueltyler2 in U.K. I have never seen an attendant fill a person’s vehicle 😸
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@QuietEd2019 no public charging stations? How much do you drive per day. Most newish RVs get +-250 miles on a full charge.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@QuietEd2019 NJ still requires it.
QuietEd2019 · 31-35, M
@samueltyler2 I would have to work out public charging but when it’s at least £0.69/kwh that quickly adds up too vs home rate of about £0.22/kwh
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@QuietEd2019 that is the same problem here. The public stations upcharge a lot. But, even if you factor in the more expensive EV on purchase, my car had its first scheduled PM at 20k and even that was free. Aside from tires, and maybe some fluids, there are no routine replacements. That and no pollution. It is fun to drive!
QuietEd2019 · 31-35, M
@samueltyler2 so what EV do you drive? I would probably go for something relatively small as my daily commute is about 4-5 miles to work and back so 10 miles a day unless I go out in an evening I occasionally do “long distance” only like 3-4 times/ year and then long is like 100 miles at most though did this year go 160 miles or so for a holiday but that’s not regular. So really none stretch most EVs capabilities except perhaps the Smart for 4 or for2
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@QuietEd2019 if you are looking to get a new care, do go EV. I drive a Polestar 2. I have a lease that expired in Feb. I have a PS4 on pder pending cost and test driving one. If I decide against it, and can afford another PS2 i won't even look for others I love it so much.
QuietEd2019 · 31-35, M
@samueltyler2 probably be second hand not new new but yes I would love to make EV work so tired of petrol car doing low fuel efficiency vs advertised not for the fuel cost but because lower mpg means more petrol burned making more problems for the environment than it should… I’m sure 120g/km co2 is based on achieving about 55mpg on combined cycle consistently if you’re only driving 40 miles per gallon burned more fuel
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@QuietEd2019 I started with a plug in hybrid, realized I was over 80% on electric, so decided to go all EV. I tent a space in my building that includes access to an assigned charger which makes it that much more convenient.
QuietEd2019 · 31-35, M
@samueltyler2 awesome right response to EV use if not using petrol engine cut out the tank and engine weight and simplify the vehicle to EV
supersnipe · 61-69, M
@QuietEd2019 Petrol pump attendants were the norm in the 1960s in the UK, but by the time I started driving in 1974, self-service had largely taken over.
QuietEd2019 · 31-35, M
@supersnipe ohh right being born in the 90s (1991) no wonder i never saw a pump attendant
22Michelle · 61-69, T
@samueltyler2 I know it's a mistype/ autocorrect, but the idea you "tent a space" in your building just sounds so interesting.
JSul3 · 70-79
@saragoodtimes That's unfortunate because today's computerized engines adjust the air/fuel mixture based upon the octane level of the gas.
You are being scammed by the manufacturer. There is zero proof of engine damage using regular unleaded fuel, but I understand your concern. If you keep your auto past the warranty date, you can then enjoy additional savings by using regular or mid-grade fuel.
