Okay car people, please help me out...

I'm trying to buy a used car. So far I've narrowed my choices down to a 2015 Acura TLX (18k miles) and a 2023 Nissan Sentra S (8k miles). Both are in the same price range. At first glance, the Nissan seems to be a better option, but all the people I've talked to recommended me to get Acura over Nissan any day. Why is that? And also, which one should I choose? Please enlighten me. 😢
From my viewpoint... (in addition to everything everybody else has already said...)

The Acura: https://www.kbb.com/acura/tlx/2015/
To me, the biggest CON here is that the 2015 TLX is a "first year" model (or the first year of production). OTOH ... Acura is the luxury brand of Honda.... which are generally extremely reliable cars.

The Nissan: https://www.kbb.com/nissan/sentra/2023/
Having owned more than my fair share of Nissan products over the years, I can honestly say that it is one brand I would never consider again. Why??..... all of the ones I have owned seem to start needing serious repairs/work the 4-5 year point.

Another point: If a 2015 and a 2023 are in the same price range.... what does that tell you? Well, it should be telling you that the 2015 is a "higher end" (read quality) and the 2023 is at the lower end of the "value" spectrum. And the 18k milage means the car averages 2K miles a year so the owner is retired or works from home. Generally speaking older folks tend to be a lot more gentle on cars than you hotrodders.... 😆

Additional things to consider:
-Difference in insurance cost
-Repair costs difference
-Maintenance records
-CARFAX reports - PLEASE GET THEM FOR EACH VEHICLE, no matter the cost. Carfax reports can tell you a lot about the vehicle and its history.... which can save you a boatload of money in repairs/fixes, especially if either car has been in a serious accident or flood.
-Tires... check the date codes on the sidewalls (that you know how, will impress the person you are buying the vehicle from... and is a great bargaining point....LOL). Tires have a "life" and that life lasts 6 years. On the sidewall of any tire, there is an oval somewhere, and in the small oval are four numbers IE 14/15. That particular code means the tires were manufactured in the 14th week of 2015. In this example, THOSE TIRES ARE EXPIRED AND NEED REPLACED! Check closely on the Acura.... because the Nissan is a newer vehicle and should have tires from 2022/2023...
-Run the VIN numbers and check for recalls
-Look closely at the glass on each vehicle for chips, cracks and so forth.
-Speaking of glass.... look closely for any signs of "dry rot" (cracking) on the seals (rubber on the edges of all glass).
-Look at the wipers.... are they flexible and in good condition
-Look at the front end lights.... does the light/cover show signs of age (cloudiness?). Are there any cracks or damage?
-Look under the hood. Is it clean? Does the battery show signs of corrosion on/near the posts? What is the date code on the battery? (Where I live we just "rent" glass and batteries.... so if the battery is over 4 years old....I just replace them cuz I HATE to get stuck in the middle of nowhere with a dead battery... I refer to that as the MURPHY factor... 😆)

Congratulations....

@Threepio Wow you just went above and beyond haha. I appreciate all the pointers and advice!!

@Threepio Wise advice!

The transmission on the Nissan if its an automatic has an incredibly high failure rate. And are incredibly expensive to replace only to have it fail again. Although Acura/Honda has had problems with their CVT automatic transmissions too. I'd still recommend the Acura.

@icedsky That's really useful information! Thanks for your input!
icedsky · 51-55, M
@LiLShrimp There is a recall for the wiring harness on the transmission in some of those Acuras. Ask the dealer or whoever is selling it if it's been repaired or if it is one of the Acuras affected

In the US market, Nissan has been dogged by quality and reliability issues for about ten years now. I'd look at recent reviews on the base model. If it's shoddy new, it'll be a pain in the ass 2nd hand.
LiLShrimp · 22-25, F
@Longpatrol Hm I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@LiLShrimp welcome!
Get in them and go for a drive. I've had cars I wanted until I sat in them and found out they don't fit, whether seats, head space, windshield view etc.

Also for a test drive take a mechanic friend along if you can that'll notice things you're unaware of, even if you're a mechanic yourself you might have an unclear view of what you're looking at.

As to everyone saying the Acura(yes Honda has a better track record for reliability)is more reliable why are they getting rid of such a low mileage car?
LiLShrimp · 22-25, F
@Justafantasy I suppose the previous owner just had a much fancier car and decided to get rid of the Acura. Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely do a test drive.

Both of them have reports of transmission issues, but overall, the Acura reviews are much better than the Nissan's. I'd want to get the transmissions looked at before buying either one of them, but after that, it's more of the one you want than anything.

I will say that the Acura has a great track record for being a car you can drive for 150-200k miles with proper maintenance.
LiLShrimp · 22-25, F
@Ontheroad Thank you! So how would I know if the transmission has issues when I look at it?
Ontheroad · M
@LiLShrimp Before buying the car, call a local transmission shop and tell them you want to get it checked for a possible transmission problem. Then tell the dealer you have concerns with reported problems on that make and model car, and want to have it checked. It may cost you a hundred or so, but it's worth the cost. The dealer may offer to check it for you, and if they put it in writing guaranteeing it's okay, then you can do it that way.
Honda may last longer. I currently have a Nissan and love it. Thinking of upgrading to a newer model

Acura is Honda. Honda tends to be more reliable and better resale value than Nissan. But. I’ve had a ton of infinitis (Nissan) and they are phenomenal cars. Each has it quirks but with Acura you are getting a luxurious Honda which is a solid car
BearDownChicago · 41-45, M
@LiLShrimp I’ve had great luck with my Infiniti’s. I had one that screwed me big time but overall they are solid cars

@BearDownChicago Your input is appreciated! Thanks!

@LiLShrimp anything I can do to help! Love cars :)

On the surface without knowing any more than what you've indicated, I would definitely go with the Acura (Honda). In addition to getting Honda reliability, you are getting an extremely low mileage car for its age (why so few miles on a nine year old car??? -- I'd find out why -- could be a red flag. If it's not a red flag, then that's great for you).

Also, Nissan has been a car company with lots of internal problems in recent years and their sales have slumped. This means they don't have an many resources for research and development, capital improvements in their manufacturing facilities, etc.

Another major factor to consider is that Nissan CVT transmissions are notoriously bad and unreliable. That could be a huge expense down the road in addition to be unsatisfying to drive on a daily basis.

Hope that helps.
LiLShrimp · 22-25, F
@SaltnLime All very hopeful information! Thank you so much!
KatyO83 · 41-45, F
I love posts about American cars. All these models I've never heard of here 🤣🤣
GlitterEater · 36-40, F
@KatyO83 It's rebranded Honda. It's just Honda models being called Acura.
KatyO83 · 41-45, F
@LiLShrimp but no available in UK I don't think. Well I've never heard of them
LiLShrimp · 22-25, F
@KatyO83 Interesting. I thought they're available worldwide.
GlitterEater · 36-40, F
I have a 2001 TL. Love it.
come2gether · 46-50, M
Both are good. Acura is made by Honda, so it's a quality maker. The Nissan will be just as good, but have slightly less luxury than the Acura. The Nissan will be less expensive to maintain as well.
LiLShrimp · 22-25, F
@come2gether Ah I’ll be sure to keep that in mind
Mudkip · 31-35, M
I'd go for the Acura. Can't go wrong with Honda, it's reliable and low maintenance.
Ferric67 · M
Acura, is a great car
I had a TL once and loved it

Had they been around same generation of cars I would have recommended you the Acura. But 2015 is like a decade back and 2015 model Acura is available at much lower costs in many places. So considering the price range and release period Nissan Sentra seems to be a safer option.
Nick1 · 61-69, M
I’ll say Acura. But looking at maintenance, I’ll look for Honda.
Same between Lexus and Toyota.
Toyota and Honda both are more reliable than Nissan.
I have all of them in my family. Lol
gdon39 · 46-50, M
Acura is going to come with much higher service costs if that's helpful.
LiLShrimp · 22-25, F
@gdon39 Is it because it’s a luxury brand?
gdon39 · 46-50, M
@LiLShrimp Yes indeed. You already knew that probably bc you are one smart crustacean. Are shrimp crustaceans? 🦐
Wizardry · 46-50, M
Would read different reviews. Including the pros and cons.
NickyLee · 41-45
Nissan. Cheaper maintenance and repair costs.
Lilymoon · F
If it were me I'd get the Nissan
eMortal · M
Which one did you choose?
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
Acura is owned by Honda. The Acura is basically a very upscale Honda. Their reliability is much better than a Nissan and have a better resale value too. I would definitely go with the Acura.
LiLShrimp · 22-25, F
@Musicman Thank you for the input!
