When giving directions, do you….

give directions using the correct terms such as North/South and East/West….?
Or do you give directions the wrong way and say things like “Turn left at the mailboxes…” and “go right after McDonalds”….????
BiasForAction · M Best Comment
I give longitude and latitude. I think it’s going to catch on like a viral tik tok.
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
@BiasForAction hahaha nicely done
Wiseacre · F
@BiasForAction good one!

slorollin · 41-45, M
I'm telling you to hang a left at the old barn and go a couple mile till you see an old 3 legged dog laying out by the road and the place'll be next house up on your right. Can't miss it 👍
nedkelly · 61-69, M
@slorollin We went and visited my wife uncle and he said met us at the Rolling Stone pub as you will get lost, bullshit he wanted a drink, the directions were go past the Rolling stone pub for about 15minutes turn right at the church and go through 4 sets of gates and this is were we live
slorollin · 41-45, M
@nedkelly getcha right to the front door 😂
HumanEarth · 56-60, M
@slorollin Funny thing you should say this. Because that is basically describes how I give out directions to places
PerfectionOfTheHeart · 46-50, F
I have to make L’s with my thumbs and forefingers just to determine my left from my right, so no one should be coming to me for directions to begin with. But if they do, I further confirm their mistake by giving directions that involve turning left when you can smell the breadsticks from Fazoli’s, a right when you can smell the flame broiled grill of Burger King, and if the sweet and creamy waft from Dunkin Donuts hits you you’ve gone too far…but reward yourself anyway.
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
@PerfectionOfTheHeart hahaha I already gave BC but this response is the official runner up!! 🤣🤣
Well most people dont know north/south, east/west. So the McDonald and mailboxes it is. 😂😂😂
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
@Sojournersoul ahhh but that’s my point…if a person doesn’t know which direction they’re heading in (or which direction they ought to be going in) then should they really be driving??? 🤣
@ImpeccablyImperfect So true. Good thing most cars have direction displayed on their dash.
akindheart · 61-69, F
both. i live near the ocean so north/south/east/west is really easy but some people need landmarks. so i give them too
Lilymoon · F
Right and left. I don't get the whole east south shit lol
@Lilymoon i totally agree...like how the hell is what direction what in a foreign city 🤷 i can't remember what cub scouts taught me about the north star or where it is in the sky 🤣
Lilymoon · F
@beermeplease exactly 😁
nedkelly · 61-69, M
Example giving directions for my daughter to visit her grandmother, go down highway till the end, get on the main rd drive along until you see Granville then turn left, go along until you see Parramatta Rd turn right, now drive along until you see the Vauxhall Inn and turn left now drive for about 10 minutes until you see Bing Lee store turn right - at this stage she is totally confused - just call her instead
It is a 70 mile drive to her house
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
I have a theory that this is partially (not entirely) a gender linked trait. I feel like men are more likely to give directions based on distances, route numbers, etc., and that women are more likely to give directions based on visual landmarks. I know it's not 100% true (sounds like you're an exception, LOL), but that's been my experience.
so if you were to come out for a visit...here's the directions i'd give you...

head west until you come to bc place stadium (won't be hard to find) head west down robson and then take a left on hamilton which brings you to the "yale town district" pick a bar and we'll have a drink...cheers.
rfhh1959 · 61-69, M
If I know the person I may give them "wrong" as the "correct" would confuse them but to a stranger correct and McDonalds would be used as a landmark if not familiar with the area i.e. You will see a McDonald's about a quarter mile before the left turn on XYZ Street
bowman81 · M
North/South/East/West and then watch closely for that glazed over look in their eyes that tells me they need to know to turn left at the first street past the McDonalds.
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
@bowman81 yesss, I usually have to give in too, and give landmark directions at some point.
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
I try to avoid giving actual compass directions, since it's safe to assume the people I'm giving directions to, probably lack any sense of direction.
2ndtimeguy · 61-69, M
Depends on person and location north south works great out in rural areas but in city always nice to give stores or building landmarks
Silentpleasure · 31-35, F
More like after the three legged cow you wanna turn north.....but if you hit the three armed homeless man you went too far.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I always use right or left. A lot of the time, if people are lost, they don't know which was is north, or west.
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
@JimboSaturn fair point
Livingwell · 61-69, M
I'm the second dork. Unless I have a compass. And the streets don't exactly run N or SW, etc. So confusing as hell.
Repete · 61-69, M
@Livingwell it’s easier to say turn left at the 4 way intersection than to say go west young man 🙃 at the intersection, in my opinion.
I wouldn’t say dork, I find it confusing going by north, south east or west when 1 I don’t have a compass and 2 streets don’t always go the exact direction you want. On my boat it would be harder to follow a , go left at the red bouy
DavidScott · 51-55, M
I just point and make grunting noises.
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
@DavidScott ahh, saves you saying the wrong thing and having them think you’re thick, right??? 🤣🤣🤣
DavidScott · 51-55, M
@ImpeccablyImperfect no, saves me from having to interact with strangers
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
@DavidScott ohhh damn! That’s smart 👍I didn’t think of that haha
Elisbch · M
North South / East West ... sometimes Up & Down..LOL 😄

Sometimes I like it when the woman gives instructions! 😋🤭
Herefornow · 26-30, M
A good combo of both! Maybe the old "try asking that person! He's been around these parts quite a bit" trick!
exexec · 61-69, C
I use landmarks. Most people couldn't find North if you offered a cash reward.
NickyLee · 41-45
Definitely correct terms, but with a touch of the wrong way, just for confirmation
theyl end up in timbuktu before any place they looking for 😇
JohnnySpot · 56-60, M
They laughed at us for writing directions down on paper.
TexChik · F
It depends on who is asking for directions I think.
BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
I never give directions. That's just wrong.
Cigarguy101 · 41-45, M
I give them the address and say Google it
The latter. No one knows where north and south is

Repete · 61-69, M
You just can’t get there from here.
Musicman · 61-69, M
I use a mixture of both actually.
HumanEarth · 56-60, M
I use building and landmarks
Fullmetal · 46-50, M
Always N, S E or W!!
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
@Fullmetal ahhh me too….but I will include left or right in parentheses if the person needs it haha
pdockal · 56-60, M
I use landmarks
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
@wildbill83 hahaha that’s funny
lumberjackslam · 41-45, M
I use nautical terms

Keep the north star at the port bow and sail 25 leagues.
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
I have to give the directions in German (I live in Germany), so they probably thinking what was that guy on about lol
travelguy01 · 41-45, M
I make sure they know every street not to turn down before telling them the right one.
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
@travelguy01 and if you see the crooked tree on the left, you’ve gone too far
NudasPriest · 46-50, M
1. Get map.
2. Identify current location.
3. Identify destination.
I get my left and right mixed all the time
MethDozer · M
People who give compass directions to a car driver are idiots.
