Are Hyundai's and Kia's junk?

I was going through Reddit and reading horror story after horror story about engines suddenly failing on models as recent as 2020, along with various other problems. And then their customer service is apparently a joke? I've never owned a Hyundai or Kia so I wouldn't know any of this first hand. Maybe someone on here could share an experience.

asking the question on line came up with the following answer..

How many miles can a Hyundai last?
A well-maintained Hyundai Elantra will likely last over 150,000 miles. A Hyundai Elantra should be able to stay on the road for at least 150,000 miles and could be expected to make it to 200,000 or even 250,000 miles without any serious repairs. That's a lifespan of ten to 15 years for the average driver.

So this is what constitutes durability today? Really? Not for me it does not.. I own a 1993 Mercedes W124, that can commonly last for 1 million miles, one of the most durable vehicles to have ever existed and mine happens to be a low miles example - 85,000 and pristine despite only being 29 years old.. and parts are commonly available from multiple sources.. I paid far less for it than a new Kia or Hyundai would cost, I drive a far better, safer, fuel efficient, truly durable (proven already) car that has already lasted twice as long as any one of these "vehicles" will last.. You could not force me to drive one of these "vehicles" every day if you pointed a gun at me..

@pdqsailor1 I had a 1965 Volvo Amazon that I scrapped at over 300 thousand miles in 1984. There was nothing wrong with it, we just wanted a more comfortable car so we bought a 1976 245 which I scrapped in 1996 because it had a hole in the floor due to road salt that would be more expensive to repair than the value of the car. The car had done almost 300 thousand miles. Anyway, it was time for a change.

@ninalanyon I have a beater for the winter.. My Mercedes has never seen one spec of salt, ever. Its only got 85,000 miles on it at 29 years of age..
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@pdqsailor1 I've only had my 2015 Tesla Model S since December 2017 and I've done 100 thousand km. The previous owner put 80 kkm on in two years!. I drive instead of flying. Plenty of salt on the roads in the winter. I just hope that the all aluminium body tolerates it, so far so good.

I'm 66 now so I don't suppose I'll get the car to the same mileage as my Amazon.
I had a kia min van for 12 years that never had a problem, except warranty issues, and died long after it reached its 300,000 mile. And even then it was very fixable, we just had no need for it any longer.
So, no? But like any vehicle under a brand it depends on how you drive it, how you care for it and which model it is.
I had a Hyundai Elantra for 8 years and never had a problem.
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
@WonderGirl1 Gee... I have a 29 year old W124 and never had a problem either, many of them have racked up one million or more miles - oh and I paid far less for it than you paid for your Elantra.. My insurance company just notified me to say that I was eligible to increase the insured value on it.. and the policy has zero depreciation... When (aside from never) has this ever happened to the owner of a Hyundai? When I see Kia, Hyundai, Corollas, Civics etc. on the road - I smile a lot and I do so quite frequently.... My 29 year old Mercedes is a dramatically BETTER car on any basis of reference than a brand new Hyundai or Kia is...

You think when I drive this and see a Hyundai on the road I don't smile?

@pdqsailor1 like every thing you buy,, good ones,, bad ones,,lot to do with it is how you take care of one,,
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
@jackrabbit10 True enough but if you choose wisely and well initially the result is very different.. I may not know a lot but this vehicle.. I really know quite well, what is a good one, what is not a good one... and it will last longer on this earth than I will...
black4white · 56-60, M
I think as with every car there are lemons... so first off ya just have to hope its a good vehicle that you choose more then brand..make..model. After that its all about how you take care of it... yes there are exceptions but most cars made anymore with technology and all should EASILY get you 150k as long as you maintain it.
just get the extended warranty :-)
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
I have driven them.. I won't own one, I won't rent one... you ask if they are junk compared to what exactly? Compared to what I own and drive? Yes - disposable garbage.. and there are far too many of these mobile speed bumps on our roads from people who are prepared to compromise everything to own an excuse for a car. BTW - I am no fun of Corollas or Civics or other minimally capable excuses for transportation either.. I want durable vehicles that drive well and do not get in the way because they fail to proceed down the road on an orderly efficient and reliable basis. I am as far from fickle as it gets in the selection of a vehicle.. Once I make a choice - I stay with it..

I don’t think they’re junk
Shytoshow · 56-60, M
Very reliable vehicles
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
My Kia Sorento is 7 years old, and has been good so far.....I’ve had other cars that weren’t close to as reliable as this one.
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
@DragonFruit Yes but please let me know when it is 29 years old and still looks and works like brand new... with the original engine, transmission and exhaust...
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
@pdqsailor1 I’m 67....I don’t know if I’ll be alive 22 years from now. I’ve also never owned a car for 29 years, and don’t know that I’d keep a car that long even if it was working fine. It’s great if you have a car like that, but you don’t have to keep a car that long for it to be a good car.
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
I am 65 now.. and I don't have a good car, I have a GREAT car, very likely the best vehicle that has ever been built, to a standard not to a price and it was intended to be as durable as it is...plus it is nothing other than a pleasure to drive and to own...and when they bury me, the car will still be just fine. @DragonFruit

They are getting better and better every year. And lets not forget Ford, VW and Toyota are all made in Asia and South America now.😷
Jeephikelove · 46-50, F
I had a ‘99 Elantra and that thing was great! I have also heard some stories about some the newer ones not being up to par.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
I have a friend who has a Kia and he has a friend who has a Hyundai, both are electric. They are both delighted with the cars.
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
Weve had a kia for 9 years, no problem and i own a 1991 ford ranger with 150,000 miles and its still going strong
DDaverde · 56-60, M
Basically there just disposable cars.
DDaverde · 56-60, M
@DDaverde
I had a friend that bought Hyundai
But that one was trouble and the first
Hyundais had engine troubles
DDonde · 31-35, M
My Kia was pretty alright for the 6 or so years I had it. I lost it in a crash so I don't know how much longer it would've kept going.
One thing that annoyed me kinda early on though was this rubber thing next to the windshield got fucked up fairly early on and would flap around. Tried using heavy duty glue but it would become unstuck with the heat every summer.

As far as the engine/transmission/etc it was fine. The battery went once, but it was cause I left the lights on overnight once by accident.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
There's one engine that's problematic, think it's called the Theta.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@uncalled4 Oh yeah, that one has been having complaints since 2011.

pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
@travelguy01 sorry I truly disagree

I paid far less for this car than a corolla or a civic or a Hyundai or a Kia... it costs very little to maintain this car (had it since 2014).. its only 29 years old.. and parts are NOT a problem.. when ever one is required which is rarely..
