@Silentpleasure i learn that skill as well. But, most often drove normally. My last manual was a 1969Triumph TR6, although in the 1980s i partially restored a 1963 Porsche 356B

@ThickMadame Not into strippi g gears but I did have an '84 Dodge Colt with a high low shifter that I mistakenly through into low while passing a drunk at night. The engine redlined and i shot by him so fast! Torque must have been crazy. Never repeated it. Thing ate up clutches in no time.
Pinkstarburst · 51-55, F
No. Aerobics while driving isn’t my thing.
SW-User
I call it my millennial anti~theft device. 😁
ThickMadame · 51-55, F
@SW-User That's really funny, but not true. See 3 of my 5 kids can drive them

@SW-User so true…I’m never concerned with my manual being stolen
BarbossasHusband · 36-40, M
Ask my ex boyfriends 😇
Matt85 · 36-40, M
Yes, all cars are manual, over here.
Yes, in fact that is what I learned on.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
Only ever driven manual. My son is auto only and my daughter has gone to an automatic car but my wife won't change from a manual.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
The first vehicle I drove, a tractor when is was 5 had a stick gear shift but you couldn't shift the gears while it was moving. I later learned to drive a 4 on the floor truck. I took my driver's test in a car with a 3 on the tree. I have also driven trucks with 10 speeds 5 gears in two ranges. I think I can drive a stick. Most of the time I only use the clutch when starting or while idling at lights.
SteveTomms · 56-60, M
absolutely - good crutch,, sorry clutch control too!
KatyO83 · 41-45, F
Yep. Never owned an auto until my new mini
WindTherapy · 56-60, M
Yep, learned how many decades ago. To be honest I prefer the stick unless I'm in stop and go traffic. Everything from sports car transmission with short and close throws to large trucks with the big sticks that feel like you're slapping the person next to you. 🤣
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Absolutely. Interesting ng though, the trend now is away from any gears, automatic or not. My current car has a continuous transmission. It is like driving a golf cart.
ThickMadame · 51-55, F
@samueltyler2 Not Fun
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@ThickMadame it is a different level of fun. My car goes 0-60 mph in under 6 secs, it comes with a "g-meter!".
TexChik · F
Yep! Grew up on a farm
anoderod55 · 61-69, M
Yes , but not real good at this time . Hurt my left knee and right shoulder (sad) ready for an automatic
anoderod55 · 61-69, M
@ThickMadame Don't think permanent . Getting better . Just this time i ended up with a lump on knee cap . Need to have it looked at .
JonLosAngeles66 · M
@anoderod55 I just had an extremely painful bout of Bursitis on my kneecap caused by a banged knee. Ouch!
anoderod55 · 61-69, M
@JonLosAngeles66 Sorry bout that 😲 hat is how mine started . Fell 🥺
exexec · 61-69, C
Yes. I learned to drive with "three on the tree" and required both of our children to know how to drive one before getting their licenses. My wife's first car was a 1932 Ford, so she could drive one, too.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Yes.
LeopoldBloom · M
Yes. I’ve owned two cars with manual transmission. However, I never learned to drive the older ones without synchronizing where you had to double-clutch to match the engine with the gears.
CestManan · 46-50, F
My last car was a stick.
I would prefer a manual because they are less likely to have problems and they are easier to fix if something does go wrong.

Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
On the floor and on the steering column. That's how i learned to drive. A 1968 blue chevy half ton.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Tastyfrzz my first car was a 1964 Ford Falcon. 3 speed on the stick.
Ontheroad · M
Yep, but like others, I'm not going to drive a car with a manual tranny when I can use an automatic.
tallpowerhouseblonde · 36-40, F
Yes I passed my test driving a stick shift.Very normal here in England. We just call them manuals.
Adeptlinguist · M
Yes! Automatics were virtually unknown in the UK when I learned to drive.
ElwoodBlues · M
Absolutely. My first stick shift car was a Volkswagon Diesel Rabbit, and I've owned others.
Back in the day, the same car with a 5-speed stick got better mileage than with a 3 speed automatic. Nowadays, modern 6 & 8 speed automatics do as well as stick shifts, and there's less chance for the driver to ruin the clutch, so there's fewer reasons to buy a stick shift car.

MethDozer · M
@ElwoodBlues there's plenty of reasons. Such as they are much cheaper upfront and last longer than automatics and are vastly cheaper to rebuild and repair.
I wish standard was more available. Especially in trucks.

i’m in the Uk, where it’s more rare for someone to drive auto than it is to drive manual
redredred · M
If one can’t, one really can’t be considered a driver.
smiler2012 · 56-60
@ThickMadame 🤔you mean basically you can change a gear lol 😆
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
Yes and I think everyone should learn
SissySecrets · 46-50, T
I can still do it I think.
ThickMadame · 51-55, F
You never forget
SissySecrets · 46-50, T
@ThickMadame I think you’re right. Foot and handwork and time it correctly.
Cantsayno · 56-60, M
Yup, I started with a 3 on the tree
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
Yes but I prefer not to.
calicuz · 56-60, M
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
Yes, my car is a stick shift by choice
JustDJ76 · 46-50, M
I learned to drive with a stick shift.
HijabaDabbaDoo · F
Yeah, we learn how to drive manually
I learned to drive on an old 1953 Chevy 1/2ton with a column shifter so I wasn't phased to see a new SHO with a stick on the Ford lot some years ago (maybe 2019...). The salesman that was showing me the car seemed jazzed that it had a stick.... Or as he called it: A Millennial Anti-Theft Device.
Sojournersoul · M
What I learn to drive on.
NickyLee · 41-45
Absolutely
Maritocorneo · 56-60, M
Yes! I prefer them. The car that all my kids learned to drive with was a manual, so all 3 of them drive a stick (manual). 2 of the three still drive a stick shift as their daily driver.
latinbutterfly · F
Yes, my first car was a 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse with a 5-speed manual, and my current one is a Honda Accord Sport with a 6-speed.
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
Yes and I can drive the old twin stick, stick shifters

Yes that is all we had when I was Learning to drive. I am now a truck driver so it’s not a problem for me lol.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
It's the standard way in Europe. Still I'd rather learn and drive automatic. 😅
bluegrasslover · 41-45, M
