Do u think its ok to have a "Black" girl playing the Little Mermaid ? 🐠 🐟

Her name is Halle Bailey, sister of Chloe Bailey from the tv show Grownish. Now I'm gonna be honest with you people here. As a person of color, I felt like she should have turned this role down. Why ? Because The Little Mermaid just so happens to be, White. Just like Black Lightning, is actually Black. He is a comic book character. But anyway, this is just a good example of politics. That ugly evil thing that is used to divide and conquer people. What do you think ?
Should there be a Black girl playing the Little Mermaid. They could have just made an original version of a mermaid film so that is wouldn't cause so much friction for certain people. Right. You tell me. I'm listening.
Best answer wins. ☺️ 🐟

She is a mythical creature.
She can be purple if she wants to be.

Who Cares .... Will Smith played James West on Wild Wild West and no one cared... so what is the difference? The problem is people focus too much on skin color in the beginning.

The story is a FAIRYTALE. It is MAKE-BELIEVE. Why have adults forgotten that fictional stories are not real and a child doesn’t care about the color of another’s skin until they are told to?

@Pinkstarburst No not all of us act that way. That's a generalized statement. I don't do that. You have a lot of good kind hearted people. But immaturity is rampant in our society today including the young. We all can do better.
Pinkstarburst · 51-55, F
@Zonuss I’m in a generalizing mood today and am just calling it as my eyes see it in my world right now.

I’m glad you are a bit more hopeful.
I'm not trying to argue at all, I'm just trying to explain how i personally feel about it without being written off as just racist because people disagree. And this will come off as redundant since I've talked about this before but I'll try to explain the best i can

First of all I really dont care about her being ariel because i dont care about little mermaid at all and they could do whatever they want to the series and i wouldnt bat an eye, but that's what sparked the discussion of this whole thing

But i understand people not liking it because when it comes to series i do like, i want it to be accurate to how I'm familiar with it, as nobody is a fan of "change" in any sense, including this

Main example that comes to mind is when people complained Annabeth from Percy Jackson was brunette, people complained
Maybe not as much but people did complain about it
And i remember also thinking it was stupid because how hard would it be to make her blonde so it's more accurate

And one involving race that irked me was when they were making the Witcher series, the director was looking for minorities to play Ciri which was annoying because it didnt make sense.

And then the new percy jackson series a black girl was casted as Annabeth and when people complain, theyre just racist, even though they complained about her hair color before, so they expected them to not complain with an even more drastic change unless they're just racist

Ive had people tell me that the percy jackson stuff was more niche and didnt have such a backlash
Which may be true
But i think the backlash is louder and more talked about because it's involving race which is already sensitive of a topic, where as seeing people complain about a girls hair color wouldnt draw as much eyes or arguments, even though it still happened

Now... the problem with it the other way is the lack of diversity in the original works, especially of main characters. So i think that should be on the original authors but that does make it complicated on the answer just being to only cast white people? That isnt really fair

Although back to Percy Jackson. In the original movie Grover, a main character was changed to black but people were more distraught over Annabeths hair because Annabeth already had a descriptive look and design, where as Grover didnt so there was more leniency to change it without changing his character from the original depiction.

Miles Morales is his own character, person, and story
Hes not just spiderman changed to being black for no reason
And everybody likes Miles Morales
But it's when they change characters who already have specific designs that we're familiar with getting changed that causes the commotion and disagreements
Iwillwait · M
@PetalsOfLilac When a Director puts their fingerprint on the story telling, they can either restrict themselves to the Novel/Book, or they can place a new twist on it. Hey Jack Reacher was tall in the books, but Tom...eh? Not so much. Lol!
@Iwillwait so this is just full opinion based because i know some specific directors have fans and are known for successfully putting their own finger print onto the works

But id rather them stick to the source material because I'm watching solely to see the novel come to life as i know and love it, not to see the directors perception of changes they wanted instead

And i prefer books way more than movies, i barely watch movies ever and i usually only watch if its an adaptation im familiar with and enjoy, so that's how i feel about them
And i can only speak about examples i know of, as I'm unfamiliar with Jack Reacher and don't have any opinions on it

We have black Santa Claus. Churches with black Jesus. It seems to me we crossed this bridge a long time ago.

@Zonuss who is to say that imaginary mermaids are not black? If it makes some little black girls happy, let them have versions of Ariel, Barbie, whoever, that resemble them.

honestly even though the original character is portrayed as white skinned with red hair, it looks like they got the red hair right lol and why not push some boundaries to help people acclimate to different skin colors. i mean, its all make believe anyway, like theres no such thing as a real mermaid, so why not a differnt shade of skin for the actress. i dont think it's a bad idea provided she has the talent to pull off the part.

you see politics as an ugly thing to divide and conquer people, but i see it as poeple working and trying hard to keep order and harmony in our society. just like you can see the good in this mermaid situation or you can look for the bad. i mean, really, do they have to find the exact shade of white for the actresses' skin when it was just a drawing in the first place? this is real life and its all make believe anyway. good for them for being inclusive. (although she is still very light skinned) a nice example that not all people are racist. i wouldnt care tbh if she had very dark skin but then im not really into these live action remakes but if i was i wouldnt care who won the part. black people get enough grief over the color of their skin. i think it's nice and there's nothing wrong with it. we live in a multi-racial society and i am glad that they didnt choose the person for their skin color if that was the case, and if they did, well, i think black girls deserve a little boost to see someone with their skin color playing ariel. i mean why not if in the end it's all love?

i mean, it might be a little odd, like trying to imagine someone asian playing the part and it would seem a little funny/off but again, who cares. its just a movie too after all.
th3r0n · 41-45, M
I find it rather annoying when they do that just to pander, which actually seems more like an insult saying there aren’t any good characters to make that are of color

Black Panther was totally cool, Static Shock would make an amazing one, why not do something new and cool instead of ruining what exists
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@th3r0n True.
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
I don't care what color she is as long as she can act.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
Why not? About fifty years ago I watched a production of Macbeth by a troupe of black African actors. It was billed "The Black Macbeth". It was all done in various African costumes as well.

But Macbeth was a Scot, so quite definitely white. It was brilliant!

So what's wrong with a black (or any other colour) mermaid?
JustNik · 51-55, F
Hm. Closest I came to any sensation like that was with a Wrinkle in Time, but that had more to do with the feeling that Oprah highjacked my favorite childhood book and changed too much beyond just the diversity, which made it feel less organic. Usually I don’t care. The rings of power isn’t bothering me in the slightest, and there seems to be a hullabaloo about that one too. I guess if you like a white Ariel, watch the one with a white Ariel. I don’t see the harm in a black version for those who would like to see that. When something new shows up, it’s not like it takes away our choices. Just adds a choice for someone who didn’t have one before. Not worth getting the knickers in a twist. 🤷‍♀️
@JustNik My child and I did. Some time ago.

You can find it on Ebay and probably you can stream it.

I think they should stop fucking around with making live action remakes of old classics. Get back to making cartoons with original storylines like Lilo and Stitch. A plucky heroine who just happens be a minority with all the delights of her culture not shoehorned in to make some statement.

They did it in an organic and charming manner with relevance to the story that also educated the audience.
tenente · 100+, M
@Longpatrol best answer
Justme22 · M
@Zonuss Playing politics with movies? That has kind of been the point since the beginning. Birth of a Nation comes to mind.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@Justme22 A great film that was by the way..😊
Whodunnit · M
I think the simplest way to look at it is like this.

Would people from other cultures be happy if the characters from their own traditional stories, myths, and legends were to be race swapped for no apparent good reason?

I think the answer to that would be a resounding no.

In an effort to 'do better' and not repeat the mistakes of the past (John Wayne as Ghengis Khan for example) I think we may be straying too far in the other direction. Perhaps this is a form of appeasement, white guilt, race-baiting, or just good old fashioned laziness. I'm really not sure.

Yes, these days the West is by and large a multi-cultural society, but rather than explore and bring to the silver screen examples of the folklore of those cultures it appears that certain people and organisations would rather copy and paste todays societal structures onto (what is largely) European fantasy whether or not it makes any sense given their setting.

Of course... this could all just be a plot to eradicate redheads from society 🤔
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Little mermaid is just a fictional character created by Disney right? or did it exist before? In either case who cares; the in the original movie she was just white by default. I don't think it is being untrue to the character really to make her black.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@JimboSaturn Yeah, ok,
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@Zonuss What does drive me nuts because it's historically inaccurate is the Bridgerton or whatever it's called when the English aristocracy is played by black character. I just like accuracy.
Whodunnit · M
@JimboSaturn The Little Mermaid was written by Dutch author Hans Christian Anderson
justanothername · 51-55, M
Fortunately when you are a school kid race doesn’t matter. And that’s how it should be when you are an adult or a parent taking your kid to see the little mermaid.

It’s only narrow minded adults who create racial prejudice.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@SomeMichGuy never heard of the song. Is South Pacific a movie?
@justanothername It is originally a musical by Rodgers & Hammerstein, based on a book by Micheber. Many musicals were made into movies, and this was, twice.

There's a little info at

Let's see...here

[media=https://youtu.be/VPf6ITsjsgk]
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@justanothername Actually you are right. Adults have that prejudice mindset because of what they were taught or exposed to over time.
Anna Jordyn settled it for me:

Zonuss · 41-45, M
Djac17 · 22-25, M
I don’t think the problem is that she’s black…..

It’s how hard they push the fact she’s black. Like I don’t give af if she’s black is she a good actress or is the whole movie gonna be Shxt? “Don’t worry, she’s black so it don’t matter” Idgaf
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@Djac17 Good point.
IM5688 · 61-69, M
I don't think it really matters to children whether the characters are of persons of color or not. Seems the children act more like adults than adults do.
It's the adults that have a problem. Red, yellow, black, brown, white, green, purple, doesn't, (or shouldn't,) matter. We are all part of the human race and should be able to accept and respect each other and our differences.
IM5688 · 61-69, M
@InOtterWords Then change the channel. There is still more white programming than black programming. By the way, we were talking about an animated cartoon movie, not tv programs in general.
@IM5688 i think you misunderstand me - i am all for a black ariel, i am happy for children who are not white to finally get some representation.

I just disagreed with you saying it does not make a difference to kids because it really does when they see people like them being main characters
IM5688 · 61-69, M
@InOtterWords Diversity is part of life. If it matters to children that a character is not like they are, then those children should be taught that not everyone is alike and they should learn to accept others as they are no matter what the color. They need to learn that not all princesses are like Snow White. What about Jasmine? She technically is not white either. Does that also matter to the kids? And what of the other human characters that are sometimes colored purple, etc. Do they have a problem with that also?
As long as the actress has an iridescent tail, okay...
That's really all I care about :D
The fins, the pretty radiance 🌊💙🌈
Zonuss · 41-45, M
I hope it doesn’t screw up her career with a dud film. I wonder if Disney will change the script further and make her a lesbian who falls in love with a human princess. But they should have Harvey Fierstein play the princess just so the transgendered community doesn’t feel left out. Oh and make sure any and every male in the script is put in his place as a gesture of female superiority. I think that covers all the woke Disney bullet points.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@stratosranger This whole propaganda thing is starting to fall to pieces. It is about time we overlook the tricks and spells that they are trying to put us under.
@Zonuss Agreed. I don’t mind if she’s a lady of color. I’m sure she’s a fine actress to have gotten this role. I just hope she isn’t blind to how Disney is just using her as a tool to push an agenda. Every other woke project they’ve worked on has tanked. I think in the end the profits (or lack thereof) will be the deciding factor.
BarbossasHusband · 36-40, M
Unless the skin color is relevant to the story, or it's based on a true story, why the fuck care? 🤷‍♀️
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
Both Women and Fish come in a wide variety of colours so I don’t see why Mermaids wouldn’t 🙂😂😂
I honestly don't care enough about the little mermaid to be obsessed with her race the way the internet is.
I've never met a mermaid, but I don't know what to think.

The mermaid of the story is just that, a story character of a made-up race. To me, that's different from a real character; e.g., the ahistorical notion of having a black person play Alexander Hamilton.

But is the point that having a white Othello doesn't make sense? Or an African Mu Lan? Or Indian Brothers Grimm? Or a Confederate Lincoln? Or a truthful Trump?
Jeffrey53 · 51-55, M
This is the first time I heard about this. After listening to her video I didn’t know people were outraged. I’m not outraged. non-white mermaids have been part of the Disney for years. They must of forgotten about Gabriella. I remember watching this in the 90’s. Do you think instead of using Ariel and used Gabriella people would be less outraged? Like I said before I’m not outraged.
Piper · 61-69, F
Yes. Disney's 1989 adapation of Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale was different in many ways anyway, that his actual tale. The Little Mermaid was not named, the story is overall a lot darker, and it sure doesn't have the same kind of happy ending.

Those who are seemingly outraged about Disney's new version of The Little Mermaid, obviously still have their beloved white, red haired, blue eyed cartoon Ariel.
Virgo79 · 61-69, M

Zonuss · 41-45, M
@fanuc2013 I agree. But at the same time we have to keep things in perspective.
Superman, although he is not real, is not a Black guy. He is white.
That is the original version. This agenda is only used to divide people and get them all fussy about
what the media is doing nowadays.
That's preposterous!

Whoever plays the part well should be the one to play it, regardless of the color of their biological space suite, which is the only difference among races.

I can't believe I live in a world where people and their abilities are judged by the color of their container.

It's nothing but absurd, and shows how primitive a species humans really are.
Budwick · 70-79, M
I don't think Disney pushed the envelope enough.
I mean, that's what entertainment is these days, right? Controversial to push the left agenda.

So, how about this non-birthing person, complete with penis, pre-TEN-ding to be a woman to play the role? Come on man - give a brother a break! Halle Bailey has made her mark. Let a no name, no talent brother in!

SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
It's fairy tale drawn from collective folk memory. It belongs to us all and it can be interpreted in any way that people find useful to the continuation of the story telling or simply just entertaining. The Disney version is just one interpretation. It is not definitive and certainly not prescriptive.

No, because The Little Mermaid/Ariel is white. Get a white actor. People would lose their shit if a white person played a black character. Wanting accuracy isn't racist or bad. Not wanting white characters needlessly replaced isn't racist or bad. Make new, black characters instead of doing this. They do this to piss people off because they hate white people. It's clearly an agenda.
