Do u think its ok to have a "Black" girl playing the Little Mermaid ? 🐠 🐟

Her name is Halle Bailey, sister of Chloe Bailey from the tv show Grownish. Now I'm gonna be honest with you people here. As a person of color, I felt like she should have turned this role down. Why ? Because The Little Mermaid just so happens to be, White. Just like Black Lightning, is actually Black. He is a comic book character. But anyway, this is just a good example of politics. That ugly evil thing that is used to divide and conquer people. What do you think ?
Should there be a Black girl playing the Little Mermaid. They could have just made an original version of a mermaid film so that is wouldn't cause so much friction for certain people. Right. You tell me. I'm listening.
Best answer wins. ☺️ 🐟

Hm. Closest I came to any sensation like that was with a Wrinkle in Time, but that had more to do with the feeling that Oprah highjacked my favorite childhood book and changed too much beyond just the diversity, which made it feel less organic. Usually I don’t care. The rings of power isn’t bothering me in the slightest, and there seems to be a hullabaloo about that one too. I guess if you like a white Ariel, watch the one with a white Ariel. I don’t see the harm in a black version for those who would like to see that. When something new shows up, it’s not like it takes away our choices. Just adds a choice for someone who didn’t have one before. Not worth getting the knickers in a twist. 🤷‍♀️
@JustNik They changed plot elements, if I recall correctly (nothing to do with race). The special effects were beautiful.

Like you, these were some of my most beloved childhood books. I read the first three in the series.
Tried the fourth much later, and it wasn't as enchanting.

I am really enjoying the Rings of Power. It is beautiful.

@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON in the book, Meg’s mother’s distinctive beauty was a big deal for Meg, so on that front, I would have liked it better if they’d tried to match the book more, or at least left the issue intact, but instead they made it more about race. Like you said, it had its nice elements, but I’ll stick with the books. lol Do you know, I didn’t even realize there were more books until I was an adult browsing a big city bookstore for my own kids when I found the whole collection?! 😂 I snatched that up with a squeal and read them all! They aren’t all equally as captivating, but I suppose the joyful surprise of them kept me invested. 😄
@JustNik I recall that, now that I read it!
The Meg and her mother detail.

Also, didn't Wallace have a bigger role in the book?

It's so cool to go forward and drift into something lovely, from the past.
The best books are like that.

@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON yes and I really missed the twins. They essentially took out many of the family dynamics that made Meg, Meg. I feel there’s always room for interpretation or even change, but it can be done without robbing the characters of the depths that made them beloved in the first place. That happens often in movie adaptations though.

🙂
@JustNik Omgod!

That is right!
They are twins....😀🤙

Thanks for reminding me.

Did you see the other A wrinkle in time movie?
JustNik · 51-55, F
@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON I never saw another. I should look sometime and see what they did. Did you?
@JustNik My child and I did. Some time ago.

You can find it on Ebay and probably you can stream it.

@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON Thank you! 🙂
