You are going back a loooong way through time...but I vaguely remember packed lunches while we travelled.

That was usually your fave...peanut butter and jelly... 🤣🤣🤣...or bologna and cheese, bags of chips, and fruit. We would always stop for breakfast, and then my mother would hand out the Rolaids, because we weren't used to greasy food. She kept a baggie full of OTC drugs in her giant bag...🤣.

For dinner we would stop at a family restaurant. I can remember stopping at a Pennsylvania Dutch restaurant, and having Wienerschnitzel for the very first time...probably the last time, too. 🤣

AND...I almost forgot! There were restaurants all along the highway next to the gas stations and rest stops. We ate at those restaurants if there were no better places near our motels.

Here in Western Canada we would eat at the local Club Cafe. or the local Chinese Restaurant. Both were sit down eateries. We didn't eat there very often. We would go there for coffee or pop and socialize but rarely ate a meal. The first fast food in our neck of the woods was A&W. You drove up in your car and the waitress would come out to your car and take your order then bring your food to you on a tray that would hook on the car's side window. Sadly A&Ws menu really hasn't changed.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@hippyjoe1955 diners were really popular, back then. Now there’s not many left here.

@cherokeepatti In NY they still rule. They are everywhere
Nelladell · 80-89, F
There were mom and pop places everywhere you went so that traveling was more of an adventure.

And in that strange world, wives usualy didn't need to work, so they fixed bacon and egg breakfasts; packed lunches, usually a sandwich or two, fruit, a little bag of chips, and a Twinkie or such for dessert; and prepared a dinner of a meat, potatos, maybe gravy, a salad, and a hot vegetable. Sometimes a dessert also. Sometimes this last meal was problematic timewise, because we also did the housework, the shopping, etc. etc. Two of the best hints I ever got were "Let him hear pots and pans being banged around as he opens the door," and "If you don't have the meal ready, hurry and get the table set." Different world.

@Nimbus Kind comment.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Nelladell little hamburger and fried chicken stands, very small places you could drive up to and get fresh fried chicken baskets or hamburger baskets, in northern Missouri fried pork tenderloin sandwich baskets were popular.
Nelladell · 80-89, F
I was in KC and down to Joplin at the time, but I don't remember those. I do remember White Castle, with their 10 tiny burgers for a dollar. And A&W stands. I remember an A&W being out of root beer. I remember 2 little joints having a counter in the middle with about 8 stools on one side and the grill on the other. You had choice of hamburgers or hot dogs.

Homemade food!!!

@StrawberryMilkshake in terms of fast food, pretty much any of the other franchises are better than mcdonalds (burger king, hardess, wendy's, etc.)

they still can't make as good a burger as the mom & pop shops/cafes, etc. though
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@StrawberryMilkshake let us hope not!
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
@StrawberryMilkshake I rather cook my own hamburgers
there was the lunch counter at Woolworths
4meAndyou · F
@saragoodtimes I remember eating there, in the town where I was born, (far western Nebraska).

I must have been around 10 or 11 years old, and for some reason I was wandering around with one of my cousins, unsupervised.

We had enough money to buy lunch, and I had something called a French dip sandwich. It was ham and cheese, deep fried, and then you were supposed to dunk it in a little bowl of beef au jus.
@4meAndyou was little when Grandpa and I went there after school before they closed. he had coffee and a donut and I a coke to go with mine
exexec · 61-69, C
A lot of drug stores had grills and served good burgers. Most towns had a locally owned burger joint where you parked and car-hops came to take your order and put the food on your window in a tray.
Nimbus · M
@exexec 👍
Budwick · 70-79, M
A&W Root beer stands also had food
Slade · 56-60, M
@AbbeyRhode Not there but I'll bet they do in warmer climes. Roller skating girls for waitresses too.

American Graffiti captured life in the early 60's really well. Kid's lives revolved around the root beer stand
Slade · 56-60, M
@AbbeyRhode Then after getting a sugar high they loved to drive real fast 👍

@Budwick used to be quite a few igloo's around too (ice cream and sandwich shop), great hamburgers

Degbeme · 70-79, M
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Degbeme I’m going to be honest though Americans do depend way too much on eating out (not at Macdonald’s🙄) in cities.

When I first moved to the city from the country I was shocked at the way people didn’t know how to cook or do for themselves.
FoolishLuna · 56-60, F

Home cookin'...To this day, I very seldom eat fast food.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Azlotto I don’t eat it, almost all of it here has MSG in it and that causes heart palpitations for me. I’m retired, if I’m in a hurry and hungry I’d rather eat eggs or canned beans or something simple like that. That type of food is more satisfying for me anyway.
Azlotto · M
@cherokeepatti Some people think that food comes from a drive-thru window. I kinda feel sorry for them.
