You are going back a loooong way through time...but I vaguely remember packed lunches while we travelled.
That was usually your fave...peanut butter and jelly... 🤣🤣🤣...or bologna and cheese, bags of chips, and fruit. We would always stop for breakfast, and then my mother would hand out the Rolaids, because we weren't used to greasy food. She kept a baggie full of OTC drugs in her giant bag...🤣.
For dinner we would stop at a family restaurant. I can remember stopping at a Pennsylvania Dutch restaurant, and having Wienerschnitzel for the very first time...probably the last time, too. 🤣
AND...I almost forgot! There were restaurants all along the highway next to the gas stations and rest stops. We ate at those restaurants if there were no better places near our motels.

@4meAndyou Howard Johnson's used to have restaurants as well as hotels

@SW-User I actually stayed at one of the last surviving Howard Johnson motels, now taken over by a Pakistani family and their mother, all living in one room...in 2008 when I moved out to Michigan. It was a very scary experience!
But when I was very little, they had all you can eat fish fry on Friday nights, and my parents would take us there and encourage us to eat like pigs...🤣

My Dad told me about these, speaking of grease. 🤭

@Thinkerbell Yes, they were famous for their fried clams. Of course, my family were NOT adventurous, in the least, and eating fried fish was as daring as they could force themselves to be...🤣

@SW-User Howard Johnson’s used to have one evening where you could get a fried clams or fish dinner and get all the refills of fish or clams you wanted. That was good.

@Thinkerbell I don’t know but I had it one time and don’t remember getting a stomachache. I think it came with coleslaw and French fries and I got a couple extra pieces of fish.

Well, a couple extra pieces of fish doesn't sound excessive.
I was thinking of guys who may have gone back for four or five extra helpings. 🤭

@Thinkerbell It was before Golden Corral days. I think people would be embarrassed back them to order refills that many times back then. Also Americans on average were a lot smaller than they are today.

@4meAndyou we did that too😁

@Thinkerbell At HoJo's, as I recall, the waitress had to bring the refills, and with every refill she got slower and slower! You would start off with 3 pieces of fried fish, but then the 2nd refill was two, and the 3rd refill was one piece! My father kept telling us to order more...🤣🤣🤣
