Last weekend I was walking through the park drinking chai, and noticed a black stick on the ground. Something about it had caught my attention, and as I walked closer, it started Moving! It was possibly a pine snake or something! (Not a snake expert by any means, but I am pretty sure that's what it was) it was about two-two and a half inches in width and maybe two feet long. It made me think twice before kicking leaves around..

@Medusa777 Yeah I bet. Too many copperheads around here to be kicking leaves.

Grind the leaves with the mower first, makes a smaller pile too🙂
But I guess that would make more snakes, well pieces since they multiply under the mower deck😁

I don't rake leaves, I leave them to rot and fertilize the soil. Snakes is a good reason not to as well.
My dog upon occasion tries to bring snakes in the house. One time she was at the back door carrying a snake. I screamed and in a panic she dropped her snake. I opened the back door to let her in and before entering she looked for her snake which had taken off. She was mad at me for that.

@Waymore We have a lot of copperheads in this part of Oklahoma, and I live fairly close to some pastures and lakes so even though this is suburbs we get stragglers coming here. I found a baby rattlesnake about a decade ago under a plastic sheet I left next to the house. I am always wary when I do yard work. Three of my relatives have been snake bit and my daughter almost got bit when she was a child at her grandparents house.

Nope! That's what mulching blades on the mower are for.

When I had my first house...I'd get that perfect flannel shirt on and a nice cup of coffee...It was like being in a movie. My house now just gets hammered by them. We have his/hers leaf blowers, wellies, etc. It's pretty much one day out of every weekend until snow. To answer your question...my next house will be in the desert w/rocks for lawn! :)

No, I’m not the outdoorsy type, and I’m a city girl at heart. The yard is that thing you walk through to get to the car to go someplace more interesting.
If I had a yard, I’d want to let the leaves stay, to give it a “house in the woods” look.

@SmartKat I don’t want snakes getting too comfortable around here.

It depends. If it's just a chore, no. But if I'm in a mellow mood, it's quite relaxing.

We don't really have that problem here. Garter snakes are common, but we never really see them. Just the vibrations of humans raking leaves would be enough to make them scarce.
My mother told me that when my grandfather first purchased a hay baler, she went to grab a bale and a snake got itself baled up with the hay.

Leaves? What are those? Jk, but seriously, we don't have many trees with leaves in my area. Raking has never been a chore for me.
Pawan · 31-35, M
That's part of trees life cycle after that new leaves arrive, I like it
Powderflask · 31-35, M
I don't and usually can't rake them, my mower has a mulching kit.
Pinkstarburst · F
Ugh...no. I jump on the mower and mulch them. The chickens have a blast in the mulch.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Pinkstarburst I’ve read that there is some nutrient in brown tree leaves that chickens like and they’ll nibble on them.
goagainsttheflow · 31-35, F
No, I just see it as work xD

blond next door broke her arm raking leaves, she fell out of the tree
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@saragoodtimes Is it racist these days to make fun of blondes? 😂😂😂
Degbeme · 70-79, M
I am cursing the oak and maple trees.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@Pinkstarburst Those trees are lucky I`m not allowed to own a chainsaw. 😝
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Degbeme I don’t have any blackjack oak trees in my yard but when I was a teen we had close to 2 acres of them on our land. Half the leaves fall off in the fall and half in early spring when they start budding out, so you have to clean them up 2 times. We made a large compost bin but it seemed like the work never ended. Couldn’t leave them on the ground because there were a lot of copperheads in that area.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@cherokeepatti No worries about snakes here. We have white and red oaks here and yes I do know about the fall and spring clean ups. 🤨 Oak leave aren`t good for plants until they`ve fully broken down.

@Stereoguy The last time I raked I was helping my friend...the one who is sick now. He used to lay a tarp down and drag the leaves into the woods to dump them. I used to do the same thing when I had my own house....there was a pit behind our shed in the back, and I could drag the tarps back there and dump them. No bagging needed...you just need to dig a big old pit in the back yard...😂
