I was in Tunisia for two weeks, many years ago, and people were extremely friendly. I avoided tourist spots and traveled on my own through the country. They were surprised to see an un-accompanied young woman in the street.

@AthrillatheHunt Thank you – I loved it. I just said to myself let's get rid of all those stereotypes, and I was right.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@helenS was this your only solo trip ?
helenS · 36-40, F
@AthrillatheHunt Not at all, I traveled many countries. Never got into any problems.
Outdoorfreedom · 56-60, M
Sorry about your trip there.
We went to the Cairo area about 5 yrs ago. We got a good tour guide at the airport. He took us all around for a couple days. Stuck with us picking us up and dropping us off . Egypt was surprisingly very secure, more than other countries. We saw a lot he communicated as well as he could using translation through his phone with my wifes phone when we couldn't understand him. Yes vendors did bug us and he told us to keep walking and ignore and say no.
It was a great trip. Structure of the city and country is bad, driving scary, and garbage all over. An awesome museum and scenery, educational and a good guide. Guide did love my wife too which may have helped.
His female helper was nice too.

Were you at least aware you might have to deal with these experiences beforehand?
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@Miram I had heard very mixed reviews from my friends so I went with an open mind, but it was much worse than I anticipated.
One couple in our hotel said they paid for an excursion and were taken out somewhere and then abandoned unless they paid double the same price again to return.
Through work I have been to Saudi Arabia, Oman and Jordan, and always found people to be respectful and courteous but that didn’t apply to Egypt.

@WintaTheAngle That is horrible. I am sorry you and your friends dealt with scummy people. Egypt got worse in the past 5 years when it comes to security. I do adore Egypt and all North Africa but it is better visited and toured when you're with people/locals that you trust and aren't profit oriented.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@Miram It’s a shame but it’s just one of those things. Perhaps I was somewhat naive.
There are plenty of other places to have adventures.

I loved Egypt. We stayed in great hotels, the food was excellent, the people were friendly and I enjoyed haggling for prices. Luckily this wasn’t my experience at all. I would go again.

I have been to Egypt. Luxor is a very beautiful place, my favorite place there.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@SW-User valley of the kings ? I saw a light spectacular show there many years ago .

SW-User
@AthrillatheHunt I visited it. It's magnificent and very fascinating
justanothername · 51-55, M
Egyptians like the rest of Eastern Europe have had at least 3000 years of experience trading and bartering. It’s a very interesting and challenging country to travel through. I also found that there is 3 different prices that can be paid for bottled water that you buy from any vendor, there is the tourists price which is the top price then there is the back packers price which is in the middle and then the last of all and cheapest of all is the price locals pay for bottled water. If you can work out what the locals pay for it and haggle them down to that price you know you are wining.
The other challenge with traveling through Egypt is that literally EVERYTHING is a bartering experience which becomes exhausting after a while.
I didn’t expect bad food in Egypt, I got that in Israel before I got to Egypt. It was brutal.

@justanothername I could have sworn that Egypt was in North East Africa not Europe 😂😂

i loved Egypt. one of my favorite trips. yes the locals are desperate but i pushed right back.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
That sounds like a common experience in Egypt. The pharaoh curse especially. 😬

SW-User
@CrazyMusicLover yeah I heard it from others as well. But then I've also heard stories of marvel about it so I don't know...
PoetryNEmotion · F
I would just be happy to be on my dream vacation there and not complain. Perhaps you chose the wrong area of Egypt to vacation in. And the pyramids and the Valley of Kings and the sphinx, etc., would more than make up for harassing locals.
It could've been worse- customs could have had a make believe grievance with you 😅
Khenpal1 · M
Anyone wishing visit Egypt , dm me . I will give you 50 tips , plus personal contacts . Not everyone there is bad.
Morvoren · F
It’s such a shame, but I’ve heard a lot of people say the same.

SW-User
Sorry very sorry to hear that.... Any good points you have to share ? Or any ideas regarding precautions...

SW-User
@WintaTheAngle what about the hotel ?
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@SW-User The hotel was okay but very noisy at night.

SW-User
@WintaTheAngle from my experience though, that's the truth about ALL the highly touristy places. Next time choose not from the places on the lists ! Those are the most authentic ones...

SW-User
You should have checked the reviews before going. I've heard numerous terrible stories regarding vacations in Egypt, ranging from catcalling to scamming to food sickness, among other things.
Moon3624 · 22-25, F
Unfortunately Egypt is known for their scammers especially at tourist sights.
One time when my sister was in Egypt , a guy sold her a bag of bread saying he will donate the bread she buys to the poor. He ended up gathering the bread after he disturbed it and doing the scam again to another person.
This is a result of poverty and lack of proper application of laws towards scammers.
“I’ll stick to the U.K. and Europe.”
There are many developed safe and beautiful places outside of UK and Europe
Some are much safer than many European nations
But if you deliberately go to places known for food poisoning and scammers like India and Egypt
What do you expect ?😅

@Moon3624 his next trip to Nigeria is already planned. Hahaha
Very sorry to hear that. I’m sure it’s a place on many bucket lists. Did you go on a group tour?
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@OlderSometimesWiser Yes we booked with a group but that offered no real protection from the local rogues

I'm so sorry you had such an awful time. That's a terrible way to be treated when you're minding your own business trying to enjoy yourselves. Very disrespectful. I'm glad neither of you were injured..
Bumbles · 56-60, M
Probably because you failed to walk like an Egyptian.

@Crazywaterspring As much as the culture, traditions and history fascinate me, I just feel it would be sensory overload beyond what I could handle.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@Crazywaterspring I have never been there due to the immense amount of human (and other animal ) suffering.
@Crazywaterspring I’m a woman and I loved it.

Not my favourite part of the world...😷
BridgeOvertroubledWaters · 61-69, M
I suggest you stay clear of the whole Middle East, it's the same any where there
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
I was told not to eat veggies in Egypt bc they use human feces as fertilizer . But I did drink tea made w Nile River water and didn’t get sick .
Moon3624 · 22-25, F
@AthrillatheHunt that was brave of you 🤣😂maybe the water was processed and cleansed
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@Moon3624 I was in a small boat and the water was scooped out of the river and boiled to make tea . This was in 1992.
Moon3624 · 22-25, F
@AthrillatheHunt I would never drink water directly from any river in the world
Because regardless of how clean it is there is always a chance of it being contaminated with bacteria and viruses
Let alone dirty ones like the Nile or seine river in paris
