While my week in Egypt was filled with amazing historical sights I would never ever go again.

From the second we arrived my wife and I were harassed and occasionally successfully scammed by the locals. And seeing my wife be pushed and shoved by people trying to sell her tacky trinkets - it’s the closest I’ve come to punching a stranger in many years.

And if that wasn’t bad enough we both had varying degrees of food poisoning the entire time.

I’ll stick to the U.K. and Europe. I didnt save money for a year to be treated like a cash cow and disrespected for a week, and no amount of ancient temples is going to change my mind.

Were you at least aware you might have to deal with these experiences beforehand?

@Miram I had heard very mixed reviews from my friends so I went with an open mind, but it was much worse than I anticipated.

One couple in our hotel said they paid for an excursion and were taken out somewhere and then abandoned unless they paid double the same price again to return.

Through work I have been to Saudi Arabia, Oman and Jordan, and always found people to be respectful and courteous but that didn’t apply to Egypt.

@WintaTheAngle That is horrible. I am sorry you and your friends dealt with scummy people. Egypt got worse in the past 5 years when it comes to security. I do adore Egypt and all North Africa but it is better visited and toured when you're with people/locals that you trust and aren't profit oriented.

@Miram It’s a shame but it’s just one of those things. Perhaps I was somewhat naive.

There are plenty of other places to have adventures.
