Do you ever find yourself thinking about past trauma you thought you have gotten over?

Our brains can often behave strangely. Mine likes to go back(not flash back) and revisit things. Mine include:
--The slow and arduous unraveling of my marriage in the early 2000s;
--The death of my father following a series of illnesses in 2019;
--The loss of various pets throughout my life;
--Various tumultuous relationships and their fiery, trainwreck endings

I'm in therapy and have been for a while. I do not have PTSD. Counseling helps, but every so often, my brain does the equivalent of a greatest hits(as in hits to the body). It passes after a bit, but I can't say I enjoy it. Anyone else?

Yes.
This year is the 1st year I lived past/through the anniversary date of the event without thinking about it once that whole day.

@Iwillwait Good news.
Iwillwait · M
@uncalled4 It was amazing when I realized it happened.

Trauma is trauma and the weirdest things trigger memories, not necessarily flashbacks or re- experiencing. It's our brains way of processing adverse events and memories

I have somewhat avoided it - but always worry it'll come😣

Yes but I try to not... Indulge much in those thoughts

all the time
I've never been able to get over something completely
as I grow I feel the feeling of hurt just deepens with time

@Raaii You are still young, there are many chances in hope/redemption..I have something in my history, I never think about anymore, things just let go as we grow older and become wiser.

@SW-User thank you so much for the advice sir 🙇‍♀️

@Raaii I hardly know you, but like you. Things will pick up, okay? I've learned life does this to us, we end up searching for the silver lining and learning from what we thought we would struggle with for so long.... (you aren't alone)

Nah. I'm good.

@uncalled4 you have to laugh to keep from crying I guess.

@Chickie Exactly.

It no longer induces the emotional reactions it did. I am able to read about similar experiences and I'm fine. Before I would break down.

I'm sorry you have to endure all of that. It is not something I have experienced, but I can see how it would be a real burden.

There are things I know I will never get over. They do come up, usually when I'm starting to feel better.

Every day. I think the old wounds are closed bit something always creeps into my head. Usually flashes the worst moment of my entire life
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
Find something else to focus on when that happens.
SW-User
Far too often and it keeps me up at night. ☹️
Every time I hear/see the name I was given at birth...

We aren't really meant to forget or "get over" these things....only to be able to move forward and get on with our lives in spite of the past trauma we've been through. ❤️
Cigarguy101 · 41-45, M
Yes mostly the day I caused my sister to die. I still struggle with that all the time
SW-User
All the fekking time
Quite a bit tbh
Chickie · F
Imo, I believe that there's not such thing as "getting over trauma" people need to understand that there's a good reason why it's called trauma and it will haunt you for the rest of your life. It's not just sex abuse or rape that does. ❤️❤️❤️
