Does anyone know what life was like before social media? [I Have Trouble Feeling Hopeful About My Future]

how was your childhood without smartphones or chatrooms?
We actually went outside and played for hours, and had real friends we actually talked to in person

It was a lot more fun, fuller, active & more genuine. Plus it taught a lot of us valuable social skills.

See your friends used to call on this thing called the house phone. There was even this thing called 3 way calling. So your friend will call you then you'll use the three way feature to call someone else and then so on. Sometimes we would have 6 of us on there. Usually on a Sunday afternoon and we would go through all the latest news of who did what while listening to songs new bands had put out over the last few months that some of us may not have heard.

@MrSmooTh If you lived out in the country, we had a thing called "Party Lines" where all the phones on your road had the same phone line and only the number of rings told which house was being called, anyone could listen in to anyone else's calls.
I rode my bike every day, and I played in the woods most of the time.

It was awesome. Can't imagine being a kid today who only knows the internet.
And if you want to learn how social media and search engines are THE mind fuck of human history, watch The Social Dilemma.
If that doesn't make you think twice about being on social media - nothing will.

@Ynotisay I did watch that 👍 it was very informative

@AkAtSUki Right on. Yep. Definitely informative. And a bit frightening.

Kids played outside and read books.

We had neighborhood carnivals and played flashlight tag at night during the late 60s.

Back in my day I had a SNES and most of my friends were imaginary 😶

Normal, we played outdoors from after breakfast till supper time, then maybe got to watch a bit of black and white TV, if your family was lucky enough to even own one. Chatrooms were the playground or the schoolyard and lo and behold we even had home phones, some of us did anyway but most of us just talked to our friends face to face!

My mom says it was totally different like you actually had to find a phone that you put coins inside if you were out somewhere to make a call. So she would go all day or night without talking to her parents or sister. It’s hard to wrap my head around it lmao but she says it was better then now 🙄

It was great. I told my wife I was afraid we would have never gotten married if we had cell phones when we were dating. I would have been tempted to call her every time she was out with another guy in college.

You actually had to over to people’s houses or call them on your house phone or from a pay phone to talk to them. Sometimes we played video games together at people’s houses on ancient systems like Atari, NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis. Other times we actually went outside and did things like playing baseball or football or hockey or whatever.
Eventually you could send people emails from your computer, but even I didn’t know what that was until I got into college.
