Do you open the oven a bit when you broil?

I know I can google this… I want real opinions.

Ok… marking my own comment as “best” just to keep it at the top.

According to Google: Yes. Open was best in the old days. Now it’s up to the manufacturer. Hence, read the manual (mine says open).

To be honest, I'd need to google what broil is
To check, yes. And during self-clean cycles....my eyebrows are growing back thankfully.

i think in th 1970s they did...not sure you have to with modern convection ovens
JovialMoose · 46-50, M
@allygator18 Right... I was reading my manual. For regular broil, you leave the door ajar. For convection broiling (which I didn't know I had), you keep it closed.

Apparently all ovens are different.

@JovialMoose I called GE, they ssid open for electric, closed for gas, but if you just bought it from 2023, no need any more
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
What? How would that work? Why would you waste heat?
@Starcrossed Broiling works mostly by direct induction from the top element in electric ovens, not only by heat, it's mainly used for browning toppings and melting cheese fast, closing the door can quickly overheat the foods and cremate them much faster than you could rescue them.

Never. I'm not sure if it's the same thing but we call it grilling.
Captainjackass · 31-35, M
Im not nearly sophisticated enough to broil something.
goliathtree · 56-60, M
yes. That is why it has a detent to hold it in position.

Yes because I'm paranoid 😂

🤯 had no idea this varied

I wouldnt reccoment shutting it ....well not for long .
Sometimes I've stood by it and open and shut it, on and off, to increase temp and get quicker results.🤷
But sometimes I'm impatient .

Depends what you're grilling ....meat, or the top of a casserole. Meat smokes a bit.

No...but I don't broil often and also had no idea it was a thing.
As a serious home gourmet I highly recommend doing so, a loaf of cheesy garlic bread can go from untoasted to cremated withing a few short seconds if the oven door is closed in broil mode.
@JovialMoose It needs to be open to at least the first notch.
JovialMoose · 46-50, M
@NativePortlander1970 not for all ovens. I guess Viking and GE ask for it to be closed. (I did some research)
@JovialMoose Viking is mainly gas, so their broiler is the bottom drawer below the main oven compartment, as for GE, I have no idea why they would claim that.
