Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben in and of themselves do not exhibit racism, but a certain paying demographic today frantically sees color first. These images of previously accepted products apparently are an affront to that demographic now. As a Latino I grew up enjoying Aunt Jemima's pancakes made from that box and not once did I lose respect for or see my Black neighbors as anything different than us.

Like any business, in order to stay afloat they must sell a product that the paying public accepts and buys. If the product was making kitten sandwiches and selling them to a select clientele who would pay for that, they would. Look at China. They have dog and cat meat cooked and ready to eat off the hook in markets. A bit exaggerated but you get the picture. So no, they're not racist extreme, they just don't want people to stop buying their product.

@DudeistPriest And allow themselves to be cowed by a bunch of spoiled snowflakes
@sunsporter1649 Yep, that's right. One day there'll be a backlash because people have had enough.
Wanrich5 · 41-45, M
@DudeistPriest uncle Ben and aunt jemima products are officially collectors items if nobody uses them

She was real her name was Nancy Green. She was a freed slave who used her profits to do good. Common sense suggests that it is a tribute to her but many lack common sense.

@DudeistPriest Stop trying to get gay with me. I ain't into that.
@MethDozer I'm sorry. When you said "I have no doubt you will be trying to ride my dick for quite awhile" I should've been more honest and informed you that's what I told your sister.
MethDozer · M
@DudeistPriest Awwww, you tried. Snuhhh

downthestreetkid smh sorry this is getting silly and out of hand i am not a racist but this political correctness is going way to far
@smiler2012 Yes, political correctness is like a malignant tumor spreading throughout the system and infecting the body politic. It's cousin "Virtue Signaling" follows its coat tails for a free ride.
Downthestreetkid · 22-25, M
@smiler2012 oh I agree
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
Aunt Jemima has been around since 1889. Why is this just now being recognized after 131 years?

@SubstantialKick they've all changed over the years but not removed or renamed til now.

I’m not familiar with “uncle ben” but in all fairness, Aunt Jemima does derive from a racist “mammy” stereotype. I usually criticize these accusations of racism as just PC nonsense, but this is a rare example where the accusers actually have a point.
GERRI · 51-55, F
@Carver contemporarily, her image was as it appears.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@GERRI Rutt literally plucked the character out of a minstrel show.
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
Yes. That does seem racist.
GERRI · 51-55, F
This is nothing really all that new--- Late 60's or early 70's Frito was forced to quit using their cartoon character "The Frito Bandito" because of stereotyping of Mexicans,, or maybe Hispanics, in general
Peaches · F
@GERRI I remember that.

@IstillmissEP Yep, as a Latino I believe efforts to fight racism have gone waaay overboard. Into the psycho-drama zone.
HannahSky · F
Long history with these products and the depictions of the characters and names of the products.

Maybe I’m racist because I use Mrs Butterworth?!? 🤔 🤷‍♂️
Downthestreetkid · 22-25, M
@MethDozer the thrush roadrunner is a homophobe
MethDozer · M
@Downthestreetkid one he's a woodpecker.

Two, that isn't thrush exhaust woodpecker. Its Mr. Horsepower, the logo for Clay Smith Cams. The Thrush exhaust rip off logo doesn't smoke a cigar.
Downthestreetkid · 22-25, M
@MethDozer okay.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
They’re caricatures based on stereotypes. It would be different if.

I’d say the harm caused by these specific instances is pretty low.
Wanrich5 · 41-45, M
What's the story behind Uncle Ben?
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
He’s a black dude on rice boxes. Maybe because the rice is white, it’s racist. @Wanrich5
Wanrich5 · 41-45, M
@Chevy454 Well the UK had to ban a Noddy character called golliwog, it was a also a brand of marmalade. I'm not sure if it was the 70s or 80s when it was banned
SW-User
It is derogatory
Downthestreetkid · 22-25, M
@SW-User how tho?
tenente · 100+, M
didn't you read BLM demands!? Quaker Oats remove Aunt Jemima, and, Hulu remove that Golden Girls episode where Rose and Blanch test a new mud face treatment
