Csn you get electrocuted by a loose light socket?

I rent.

Light blew, got a new one , but when i went to change it , the light socket literally just twisted around.
And when i gave it a push (as you do with bayonet bases) it just slid up into the light batten.

I mean, i could turn off the circuit, but i looked in the breaker box....amd this place is so old all the lables have faded and i cant tell which is which.

And our landlord is shit at commiting to fixing stuff
I admittedly know little to nothing about this stuff but when it comes to electricity and possible electrocution/fire hazards, I’d want someone who does know about this stuff to look at it.

@OogieBoogie Yeah, I know how that rent raising game goes. I’m just leery because it has to do with electricity. You’d think El Cheapo would rather not risk her house burning down. Unless there’s insurance money involved.

Think I might be watching too much crime TV. 🤔
😂@OlderSometimesWiser oh the way house prices have skyrocketed here .... I'm sure she'd love the place to burn down ....no doubt about it 🙄

You could just turn all the mains power off.
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@OogieBoogie If I was your landlord it would be and not taken into account at lease renewal.
@KiwiBird its funny how rare it is that good landlords get good tenants, and the Same the other way .

I hear so many horror stories.

@OogieBoogie If I am getting a new tenant/new lease I will ask the market rent. If the tenant is a good one I keep any increase to a minimum even if the rent falls below market.
No, you're not going to get electrocuted.

It's highly unlikely you're going to even get shocked with the light socket twisting around like that. If there were to be a short, you may hear and even see the arc it creates, but it would just throw whatever breaker that circuit is on. But, it's something that definitely should be looked at.

Your landlord needs to get his arse in gear and get with it.
@PhoenixPhail ugh....EVERY repair is alwaus a waiting game 🙄.

Lucky i have candles.

Don't touch it!!!

Put a floor or table lamp in there for now.

I read below that it's a lawyer - so I suggest your send a written notice that it's an unsafe condition - to please repair it ASAP - lawyers don't like having exposure like that..
@fun4us2b you know, that's exaclty what i did yesterday. Usually i ring them, but this time im doing it the 'leave a trail way'. I have about three repairs still waiting to happen.
And rhe last repair was done so cheaply to the gate - its now slipped down and is dragging again .
Its real sjame really, this place has the potetial yo be really nice.... but its jist falling to pieces.

@OogieBoogie Keep at it - ultimately they're fixing their own property - I just do not understand landlord mentality - it's almost like they are a certain type of person....

Can you take a picture and post it? I don't like the sound of what is going on, but it doesn't sound good. It's a 50/50 chance of getting shocked, but a short, which can cause a fire, is certainly possible.
@Ontheroad ive made a written report .
And hung a work light in there for now.

I really don't know🤔 Someone else posted this about a year ago and there are folks who do ...just be safe
@bookerdana its jist my laundry. So its not imperative .

Thanks anyway
I would come fix it for free.
@Sojournersoul see you in spring 🤗
@OogieBoogie Maybe a plane would work better. 😉
@Sojournersoul ya think ?

🤣

Report it to your landlord. Unless you're an electrician, I wouldn't advise messing with it.
Don't grab any of the part the light screws into
@Justafantasy i was just about too, and rethunk it.
I do have nitrile gloves, but then.....didnt want to risk it.

This is an oldish house, and ive already had to have two perished light fixtures replaced.
I hate calling in repairs , but then, if the landlord kept up this place - i wouldnt have to !😠
@OogieBoogie old house is going to have issues. Non metal parts or electrical should be fine to touch

No rental agency?
@KiwiBird yep.

But the landlord is a stingy cow🤷‍♀️

I have two repairs been pending over 6 months now🫤
