Ever had a panic attack? What are you tips to combat them?

itsok · 31-35, F
It differs depending on if I feel like I’m going to have one or I’m actually having one. Propranolol and sh help in either situation. If I’m having one then listening to someone talk to me and trying to regulate my breathing helps. Holding ice or one of my dogs can work too. If I feel like I’m going to have one, exercising can help, or if I’m feeling very overwhelmed then I try to put myself somewhere dark and quiet. Something like a sudden noise or someone touching me can push it over into panic attack.
Afterward I have a checklist of things to do, like eat, drink, take a bath, take meds. And I have a box of little toys and books that help.

You gotta figure out that you're safe. Most of the time, just let it happen but you gotta learn to be more comfortable and gauge your surroundings. It isn't about combatting them because part of being a human is panicking. If you see how people panic at their time of death, you'd see it is hardwired in us. Sometimes we are just too stressed to see that we're okay and that there is no need to actually trigger the threat response. There actually is no threat at all but we still wanna be safe. And we're safe, usually at the end of it :)

So you'll be fine. They'll go away more as you start to remember that or unlearn the things that cause it to trigger so misplaced

My therapist told me we can create panic attacks by a certain short breathing so I do the opposite to calm down. Long - deep - breathes.

It also helps to think or say a word you associate with calm and safety. Toe beans for example.

If your thoughts are running I suggest venting them. In a post on SW or just write them down for yourself.

If it's extreme and you can't calm down despite trying with breathing techniques or venting then my go to is anxiety meds and to cuddle up in bed -nap and reboot the system.
I have panic attacks often; my prescription Xanax helps a lot. Losing myself listening to music or focusing on one thing helps me work through them. I hope you have a good friend you can contact so they can help you work through them. The important thing to remember is that they will pass even if it doesn't feel like it right now.

Yep… once one actually starts for me, I find I just have to ride it out. It sucks thinking you may just really lose your mind and never feel normal again. When I was younger it would feel like I was dying, with age I find I just fear I’m really going insane and will never feel right again. It’s all encompassing sense of doom and urgency. It sucks.

I try to do things like run my hands under very cold water or go outside (even just on my deck) for quiet and grounding. For me distractions do nothing, so I need to really ground myself in reality. Sometimes I pace too…

I haven’t had one in a while 👀 *knocks on wood*
my mom had them big time for years....she was on major meds for years to combat them....all the best to you ❤️

basically, just ride them out. don't fight them. find a quiet place if you can, and even more so a friend, if you can, and let it all come out.

Relaxation breathing techniques sometimes help me. Take a deep breath ythrough your nose for a count of ten, hold it for a count of fifteen, exhale from your mouth for a count of ten. Repeat as needed.

Yes they suck.

Only thing that helped me was sitting on the floor back against the wall and breathing in and out slowly. I would count slowly and wait for it to pass
