There has to be a solution to the housing problem.

Houses are so expensive now. I hear even the houses in Florida are expensive now. How's my art degree child going to afford a place of her own? I remember renting a cute one-bedroom apartment in a convenient area for 675 bucks a month all utilities included. You cant even rent a room for that much now. What can we do to change things??

Everywhere there's half a million/ million dollar houses but none for like under maybe 330,000 in New Jersey (condos included) unless you want to live in a trailer in the middle of nowhere.

Where in the US is housing more affordable assuming the only solution is to move? I mean maybe theres communal living situations but that has its problems with accountability. Anyone have any ideas for me to help my kid (all our kids who dont make that much money) to move out lol? She wants to live alone. Thats the major problem.

Lots of places are against affordable housing bc they're concerned that developing it will ruin their own property values. It all boils down to greed and where society has their priorities

I look at US real estate all the time and there are a lot of affordable ares, but probably not where she’d like to live though.

It would probably be best if she lived alone because when people live together, typically one person carries all the burden while the other(s) bring nothing but problems.

So when that happens, it is actually cheaper for a responsible person to live alone.

What kind of burdens do some house mates bring? Cannot hold down a job, their car always needs repairs, maybe they decide to get into substance abuse, fights with ex's, bring their flea-infested illegal dogs,or the WORST - they try to bring in their OWN housemates who also -

There is a solution. Eliminate one simple thing from the Real Estate industry.. PROFIT. Every house or residential property can only be sold for the price for which it was purchased.. No exceptions.. This means no one can prfit from a sale. And no properties would be pulled from the rental market for profiteering. No lag time while places are built..And the cost of labor and materials would drop due to lower demand.
Now I know its never going to happen. But thats how you do it..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman how about instead of investors building lavish private homes they build affordable condominiums and such. haha like that will ever happen either. looks like the government will need to step in. so to go further looks like im doomed.

@Penny Real estate has always been the investment of the people. Home ownership is forced saving. But it became really popular more recently and of course exploded with the ninja loans and every step in the process cashed in. contracters, developers, Agents, financiers and makers of fittings all had paydays for a while.. Now everyone is squeezing the consumer and trumplike clients who dont pay are pushing up defaults and ruining lives. It doesnt help you at all. But it does tell you a lot of people are having a hard time. In your shoes i would keep your head down and look for an edge. A shared purchase or maybe an inheritance.. Something original..😷

@Penny one has to buy the land then put a single wide on it.

Live in the mountains away from society and be able to afford to visit those cities enough to get in with locals get a little good from both worlds
Penny · 46-50, F
@Toofargone the hard part is finding employment in the more remote areas
Toofargone · 26-30, F
@Penny that's been my problem I've had to work terrible jobs because of lack of opportunities. With an art degree your daughter could teach in some school districts my uncle is teaching with only a music degree and nothing in education
Jeephikelove · 51-55, F
@Penny yes, that’s exactly the problem
Undo the Supreme Court's unconstitutional rewrite of the Constitution to add a completely new class of parties to the agreement (companies).

Break all forever incorporations, make them defend their right to continue every 3 or 4 yrs.

Kick corporations out of buying up single family homes.

Make all HOAs FOIA-able.

Limit profits.

Increase requirements, responsibilities and fines.

Fix the broken zoning (see the yt channel "It's not just the bikes").
The solution is waiting for real estate to implode, people's 2nd and third house mortgages to collapse and foreclosures to start happening and mortgages only being given for primary residence.

I don't see that happening anytime soon

Maybe cheaper in Pennsylvania or Ohio
Not sure.🤗
Penny · 46-50, F
@Montanaman oh thats depressing lol. i have a friend who moved to PA out in the Poconos. He cant even get Domino's delivered and he doesnt drive. he hates it. but yeah its a good recommendation. id probably like it there. fresh air and stuff. ive lived in the country before. winters can be tough though.
Montanaman · M
@Penny The Poconos is to die for. Who needs internet or 7/11 ? 👍
Penny · 46-50, F
@Montanaman im like a spoiled jersey girl now. the roads are awful up there lol. I guess the oxygen saturation might make up for it though. idk if id want to move there. PA isnt really that minority friendly when youre Asian.
East Coast is getting awful. Gotta get west of the Mississippi.
@MarbleMarvel It's not better west of the Mississippi either, the major metro areas, like Denver, KC, Omaha, Wichita, SLC, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Des Moines, Iowa, Billings, Montana, Boise, Spokane, Portland, Seattle, and other places, are just as hard hit.

There are solutions. And none of them happen any time soon. :-(

Housing prices in Florida are way down right now. Not to be picky, but why get s degree in art??? Why not get a degree in a field in demand.
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
@Carla Where are you getting those numbers from? I live in Florida and have to pay for hurricane coverage. We pay $2600 a year.
Penny · 46-50, F
@Musicman yes but imagine trying to buy a house with todays prices on the same wages/salary
Carla · 61-69, F
@Musicman

The numbers of between 5 and 10 thousand was from a different source.

It's a free market economy. But you already know that.

Its the 7% interest rate that is the real killer
My first apartment was a one room, just a room, no actual bedroom, no bathroom, it was a shared in the hallway, a stove and refrigerator in the corner, efficiency, $135 a month including basic hot water and heat, back in 1988.
Penny · 46-50, F
@NativePortlander1970 you live in portland?
@Penny I'm currently living in the middle of nowhere iowa, I haven't lived in Oregon since the late 90's because of a fallout with extended family, I'm just glad my Dad and Grandfather weren't alive at the time to see what happened.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@NativePortlander1970 in 1968 we paid $145 a month for a 2 story townhouse, 2 bedrooms and a bath upstairs; a large living room, kitchen and half bath down, plus a fenced, paved large patio in the back.

I earned about $1,200 a month and with no stretching, spouse not working and we put $200 to a savings account every month.
