People Don't Seem To Understand that Hillary Won the Popular vote

60,467,000+ people voted for Hillary and 60,071,000+ people voted for Trump. If the elections were based on actual individual ballots cast, then Hillary would be president. So, please stop saying most people voted for Trump, because it is inaccurate. He won the electoral vote, meaning he gained the most number of points through the states in that system, which is what decides the president.

The same thing happened with Bush/Gore. It's interesting how many people don't seem to understand their own country's voting system...

When it's in someones interests not to understand something, it's very hard to get them to understand it. It's basically an ongoing aftereffect of the juryrigging obtained by the slaveholders when the constitution was first written. Slavery, the gift that keeps on giving 😕

RealMustangGuy · 61-69, MVIP
The electoral system was an excellent and practical system when the country was founded because of the vastness of the United States and the impossibility of counting individual votes at the national level with the primitive methods available at that time. But in the modern era each individual vote can be counted.

People always bring up complaints with the electoral system after an election, but then quickly forget about it until the next election. The electoral system can be changed, but only by a amending the Constitution.
AlienZipper · 61-69, M
Excellent response...plus it would be very difficult to pass on an amendment about this because the smaller states would be greatly opposed to it...
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
It was also set up to prevent mob mentality. Meaning...if the majority of voters were to decide the president straight out then all campaigning would be done in the most populated cities rather than any focus on the rest of the country...this of course can also be regulated/changed by enforcing some provisions but. .do we really want to do that for the few instances where this happens and we are pissed about it?
RealMustangGuy · 61-69, MVIP
@JaggedLittlePill and @Alien-Zipper, good points both of you. Solutions to complex issues like this are never as easy as they might appear.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
And New York has just as many senators as Montana. The electoral colleges is an attempt to balance between highly populated areas and more sparsely populated areas. It is not perfect but neither is the popular vote.
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
The United States is republic with power lying with the states. The electoral college is how we elect the president. It keeps the large states from having all the power over elections.
SW-User
And a very fair one at that!
carpediem · 61-69, M
You are the one that doesn't understand little snowflake.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
@offingg: So 'whiny an child' is a term of endearment for you?
carpediem · 61-69, M
@theoneyouwerewarnedabout: Exactly.
Dogger · 51-55, M
It's easy to understand (I agree with your post pointing out many don't seem to understand it)

Whoever gets the majority vote in each state... then ALL the electoral votes go towards the person for the entire state for that person. Hilary did get more popular votes, but, the states that Trump won resulted in those states having more electoral votes put in for him

And the amount of electoral votes that each state gets is solely based on the population of that state. thats why candidates tend to campaign in more populated states. and thats also the reason we conduct a census every ten years, because the population will change over time, hence, affecting the amount of electoral votes that that state gets for elections
Kaceekakes · 31-35, F
Exactly. I was only meaning to highlight that when people say that "most or more people voted for Trump", it's actually not true.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Except for 2 states which split.
Dogger · 51-55, M
@Kaceekakes: agree with you competely
offingg · 26-30, F
Electoral votes are NOT part of democracy. Outrageous.
Kaceekakes · 31-35, F
@offingg: This is completely off topic, but I love your avatar. Jane is so underrated, yet amazing.
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
Obama won both the popular vote and the Electoral College, so I'm not sure what your point is.
offingg · 26-30, F
@Kaceekakes: Haha thank you, I love her too #90skids
Cierzo · M
From outside the US your electoral system looks complicated, but quite logical for such a huge, diverse country.
Anyway, instead of whining now, better start a debate for the next election
Kaceekakes · 31-35, F
I'm not whining, just pointing out something that keeps being stated is inaccurate.
TheStomachSadist · 26-30, M
They don't want to understand. Understanding ruins their motives and causes. You have to wonder what it is that some people really want - to understand or to have a cause. In too many cases it's the latter.
TexChik · F
Had voter ID laws been in effect , it's doubtful that would have happened ... Libs can't win a fair election
SW-User
And let the people say amen!
MasterLee · 56-60, M
we don't accurately track the popular vote because it is meaningless. We elect a president based on the number of congressmen. This is a bad argument because it is unprovable.
Kaceekakes · 31-35, F
It is provable. If you type in popular vote on google, it will give you the exact numbers. That's where I got them. (:
MasterLee · 56-60, M
@Kaceekakes: Most of this is based on exit polling. So you 'vote' for trump but when they ask you, you say clinton.
Kaceekakes · 31-35, F
@MasterLee: No, this is based in ballots cast. I assure you they did not "exit poll" over 120 million people and if they did, I certainly wasn't included.
SW-User
so she beat him in the popular vote by less than 7/10ths of 1 percent.

am I supposed to be impressed?
MasterLee · 56-60, M
@Alien-Zipper: Don't forget the 3 million illegal votes and the uncounted military votes
SoFine · 46-50, F
@AlienZipper: AND ...poor Bernie Sanders, he was stabbed in the back.....he is not crying wolf ....if I was him, I would get this info out ....
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Esoecially since so many illegal votes and it doesn't mean crap
yllacsar · 46-50, M
How ignorant do you have to be to think America is a democracy - it' a REPUBLIC.....GOD you people are DUMB
Kaceekakes · 31-35, F
I understand it is a republic, hon. I'm merely pointing out the inaccuracy in all the posts I've seen that say more/most people voted for Trump. Based on individual votes, it simply isn't true.
yllacsar · 46-50, M
@Kaceekakes: wasn't responding to you kace - you're clearly quite intelligent....
SW-User
America is fucking complicated.
Okay Germany is too, but not like that.
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
GermanAf - Just think of 50 states and not being able to win the election by winning the 5 most populated. Each state needs to have a say in an election not just the ones with the most citizens.
It would be like the EU only listening to the countries with the most people in them....not fair.
SW-User
Well Germany has a lot of people and is in the EU. But no one listens to us ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
SW-User
When I look through this post I can't see 50% of all replies.
That means I pissed all the salty old people off :D

We don't have one.
i think if the election were based on the popular vote, both campaigns would have employed a different strategy. Both played to the existing rules.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Yes and people would take voter fraud seriously
firefall · 61-69, M
Yup. While I think the Electoral College is wretchedly unfair and undemocratic, it's what the ground rules were for the election, and if they'd been different, both sides would have followed different strategies.
ReaperofTime · 46-50, M
Exactly just as ROMNEY actually won by count last election

However the college goes back to the founding as being created to safeguard us idiots being too stupid to pick the "right" leader
Kaceekakes · 31-35, F
No, actually, Obama won the popular and electoral votes in both of his elections.
SoFine · 46-50, F
Yet this Hillary stabbed Bernie Sanders in the back, he would have been your president now ........
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
He would never have won against Trump. He was too "socialist" for America. Nice dream though
Kaceekakes · 31-35, F
@JaggedLittlePill: I agree. As much I loved Bernie and was rooting for him in the beginning, I think he was too liberal for "middle America". Funnily enough, though, I actually think he has a better chance if he runs again for 2020. He'll be seen as even more of an underdog, and since a lot of people already think it should have been him instead of Hillary, he will already have a ton of support.
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
I don't guess it matters under our system
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
I understand it, when the country was started states were more important than the federal government so the popular count did not mean a lot. Now it is the other way around, the federal government has made itself more important than the individual states.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
@Subsumedpat: not for much longer
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
@MasterLee: what do you mean
randomruth · 26-30, F
in the end it doesn't matter because the right person still won
InvaderNice · 26-30, M
I support Trump but honestly your answer is off topic.
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
Makes you wonder what they are teaching in school.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
They don't teach much anymore which is why we have these snowflakes.
AlmightyLoad · 26-30
That has to happen to account for state population
InvaderNice · 26-30, M
Yep I agree.
MartinTheFirst · 22-25, M
It's weird
MartinTheFirst · 22-25, M
@ReaperofTime: That still doesn't make it less weird. It's weird that they don't actually count the people's votes, it just shows how they're manipulating it to their liking.
ReaperofTime · 46-50, M
@MartinTheFirst: Agreed the Votes ARE counted , but we dont always have the FINAL say
MartinTheFirst · 22-25, M
@ReaperofTime: Which is weird?

@Subsumedpat: i am not sure what exactly your point is with your last comment. I am only explaining facts not hung up on anything regarding a democracy.
