neither. i don't care about being respected. i dont see people often enough to need to "demand respect"
Umile · 41-45, F
@looping lucky you

Degbeme · 70-79, M Best Comment
I don`t demand anything from anyone. I hope I can earn it.
Umile · 41-45, F
@Degbeme I strongly suspect you do irl (earn it), my friend.Even the teasing here is from great affection. 😊
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
You cant demand respect from people. Even if theyre forced in a position to show respect it wont be genuine and lead to problems in the future. You have to show reapect to be worthy of receiving it.
Umile · 41-45, F
@GuyWithOpinions I get what you're trying to say.

But some/most don't deserve my respect.

It's very hard to make me respect someone,

But, I'm not gonna tolerate their disrespect.

My dignity demands it.
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
@Umile if you think someone doesnt deserve your respect its because they havent earned it yet. Maybe for good reason.

If you find it hard to respect people maybe its because you have been hurt in the past so your less likley to trust making it harder for people to have a chance to earn it.

Maybe you dont tolerate disrespect because your tired of loosing respect.

If you judge everyone the same the cycle will always continue. Maybe change the type of people you surround yourself with. There are worthy people out there somewhere. If you close off completely you might never find them.

But yes. I agree with you..

You give it. Until they give you a reason not to. Then you learn to act accordingly.
Umile · 41-45, F
@Casheyane Nmh. 💯
Primnproper · 56-60, F
I meet others energy and input. I respect others in general unless they prove they are not deserving. I respect their feelings, their beliefs, their opinions.
Umile · 41-45, F
@Primnproper good words. Well said.
therighttothink50 · 56-60, M
The happiest people I've ever met, regardless of their profession, their social standing, or their economic status, are people that are fully engaged in the world around them. The most fulfilled people are the ones who get up every morning and stand for something larger than themselves. They are the people who care about others, who will extend a helping hand to someone in need or will speak up about an injustice when they see it.

Stand for something. Don't quest for popularity at the expense of morality and ethics and honesty.

JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
People say "respect is earned" but how can that be if you just met the person? I say respect should be your default attitude until someone gives your reason not to respect them.

So I expect people to give me some respect; I'm not jumping through hoops for people.
Umile · 41-45, F
@JimboSaturn The minus bit. Makes sense.

It's like the chacha with me.

I let them lead.
Eternity · 26-30, M
Both. I conduct myself in a way that is deserving of respect and so I will accept nothing less.

Especially because everyone has my respect until they do something to lose it.
Umile · 41-45, F
@Eternity 💯
Mmiker · 46-50, M
Honestly both. I demand it when my ego is controlling. When I’m strong enough without my ego it is drawn towards my behavior as real honest behavior defines respect towards others thus respect is reciprocated.
jackieash · 26-30
I firmly believe respect being earned and not given. Courtesy is a different thing altogether. Saying "please"; "thank you" or "excuse me" if you need to pass someone or "sorry" for something is not putting yourself down. I must be getting old. I'm getting pissed off by the lack of courtesy I encounter on a daily basis. I hardly ever see or hear anyone (and it doesn't matter which age group they are, use any manners. I'm getting to the point where I am thinking "f*** it, why should I?" I'm convinced people think courtesy is when women do that bobbing up and down to the monarch.
Umile · 41-45, F
@jackieash lol. I feel. Chivalry is not the only thing dead. Also manners and respect.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I respect people till they give me a good reason not to. I expect it in return.
Umile · 41-45, F
@cherokeepatti The good old minus. Nmh.
I'm like you: " Don't demand Respect from others, but don't tolerate disrespect either "
Umile · 41-45, F
AlchemyFox · 36-40, F
In many settings I just keep to myself. Even if people talk to me, I keep it polite then move on. I don't give them the chance to push my boundaries.

All I can do is be a Mom. I don't have patience to earn people's respect. People are either respectful, like humans can be, or they're disrespectful. I have no ambition to change their minds.
Umile · 41-45, F
@AlchemyFox In then out. I usually stay out. But its straight from the get, guess you want it straight.
AlchemyFox · 36-40, F
@Umile I need it straight. People tend to play games and manipulate. I think it's just human nature. I don't want to fall for somebody's bull crap though. I can feel their expectations and hesitations and at this point in my life I can't handle it.
Umile · 41-45, F
@AlchemyFox nmh. Go with your gut. Think it through. Try to do it calmly.

@jshm2 somewhat. They're also the ones that are tired. The quiet one one, that on that particular day, is ready to roll.
Arantxa · 18-21, F
Try to earn it
Umile · 41-45, F
@Arantxa I do te cordial bit. If they cant reciprocate just that, smh. They don't need to be in my presence.
exexec · 61-69, C
I don't demand respect. I am who I am. I probably have more respect than I deserver, and I let people know that I appreciate their respect and will try to live up to their expectations.
Umile · 41-45, F
@exexec Good of you
teachmetiger210503 · 36-40, M
If you have earned true respect from yourself respect from others is only spontaneous. In such case when others disrespects you it only bounce back to themselves
This is the law of nature 😉.
Umile · 41-45, F
@teachmetiger210503 Beautifully said. 🙏
Cassieeeee · 31-35, F
I don't think I demand anything from anyone.. But I will speak up if I feel disrespected (sometimes it might take some time to realize because I always want to see the best in people..).
Umile · 41-45, F
@Cassieeeee Truth
I earn respect. Sometimes it takes a long time to earn it ,but it’s worth it. Demand never last long or and it’s not true respect.🥰
Umile · 41-45, F
smiler2012 · 56-60
@Umile 🤫 i feel respect is not a god given right in some senses i think you need too earn it
@smiler2012 See my comment
smiler2012 · 56-60
@NativePortlander1970 that is 🤷‍♂️
Ducky · 31-35, F
Both, but more the latter than the former. I work hard to earn respect, but when I do earn it, I expect it.
Umile · 41-45, F
@Ducky nicely put 👌
Neoerectus · M
Both. I give it and someone earns or loses it through their actions. I expect the same.
Umile · 41-45, F
@Neoerectus well put
I demand nothing and I am too neutral to do anything to earn it.
I just be myself.
Umile · 41-45, F
@thinkingoutloud 👏 👏 👏
Lilymoon · F
Respect is earned. If im not getting it, I don't give it
Umile · 41-45, F
@Lilymoon I think I'm the same way.

@RedBaron You must be real happy then..:)
RedBaron · M
@Umile Happy enough.

I don't demand or earn.. but just let it come on its own.

KunsanVeteran · 61-69, M
To be real and meaningful, respect must be earned.
Umile · 41-45, F
No. Respect was never the results of this system.
I do my best to earn it
Umile · 41-45, F
@mindlessdrifter 💯 💪
I start with basic human respect for others; it’s my default. They don’t have to earn it, but their own behavior determines whether or not they keep it.
Umile · 41-45, F
Hanginginthere · 31-35, M
Real respect is earned not demanded

Umile · 41-45, F
@NativePortlander1970 A good point. There are people who are purposefully disrespectful. I can't handle that.
@Umile Sadly I have family on both sides that are like that.
