Is breakfast really the most important meal of the day?

Top | New | Old
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
No. I sometimes feel much better if I skip it.

@pdockal oook I don’t think you understand anorexia but okay sir
pdockal · 56-60, M
@SW-User
I don't have it
It's horrible to have
It's about precipitation
But i understand food and meals
And the comment wasn't about axoria
SW-User
@pdockal fact is your comment wasn’t necessary. I know other users here who struggle with eating disorders and that was why I made my comment. Correcting me was demeaning. I know wtf breakfast is. Meals and nourishment for someone with an eating disorder aren’t like the clockwork you’re accustomed to.

No need for mansplaining

It is because probably it starts you up for the day and gives you energy. For me though dinner is my most important meal of the day, if I don’t sit down and have dinner I wake up hungry in the middle of the night and I have to go downstairs and potentially see a ghost in the kitchen.
Nevaeh0081 · 36-40, F
@SW-User That's how I get fat,man. Smh.

@Nevaeh0081 I try to avoid snacking in the middle of the night by sitting down and eating dinner in the evening. If I rush or eat too early/go out after then I get hungry. Eating toast, nuts or a packet of crisps in the middle of the night occasionally is unlikely to make anyone fat.

Years ago, the New York Times investigated the sources of various popular claims about breakfast, such as being the most important meal of the day, or that you will gain weight if you do not eat breakfast, etc. It turns out that just about all of these claims originated from "studies" done by the breakfast food companies themselves, or from sham research groups with names like "Breakfast Research Institute" that were created by these companies.

It seems to me that people vary widely in terms of their eating habits. Some people make breakfast the biggest meal of the day. Some people skip it completely. Some people do not have "meals" in the ordinary sense but simply graze on small but frequent amounts of food during the day.

Do what works for you!

@DrWatson Eating a big breakfast is too much for me. I had a banana and almond butter with a cup of hot green tea for breakfast this morning. That’s plenty for me.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@cherokeepatti In my case, I have changed over the years. I used to skip breakfast altogether. Nowadays, I eat a big breakfast. If I have a light one, I am hungry all morning.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@DrWatson I think the fiber in the banana combined with green tea helps keep my appetite down. I feel hungrier if I don’t have green tea or a banana.
Jonjdw · 51-55, M
I get to work at 4 o’clock in the morning. I eat at 7:15 am break time. And when I’m home on Sundays I don’t eat right when I get up. Sometimes I don’t eat for hours. So no I don’t think breakfast is that important

Although not eating makes some people irritable, there's some good evidence to show that it can make you more productive. According to researchers from Yale University and the British Neuroscience Association, the stomach hormone that stimulates hunger when you have an empty stomach also promotes new brain cell growth.

Researchers found that fasting for 16 hours is beneficial to your body as long as you do not have comorbidities. If planned well, a 16-hour intermittent fasting diet provides you with many long-lasting health benefits. It is one of the easy diets to follow. But initially, it will be hard on the body.

I skip it sometimes but have been eating it the past few months. Haven’t gained weight which surprised me especially since it’s winter.
Convivial · 26-30, F
Not sure if it's the most important... But you do need fuel to get through the day... Otherwise you fall over
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Probably not -- but it was a good add slogan for cereal-makers.
pdockal · 56-60, M
Yes but most don't realize how much
helenS · 36-40, F
@pdockal I'm one of those. I'm simply not hungry in the morning.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@helenS
Doesn't matter ... put something in your belly and your day will be much better and less likely to put on weight ... you NEED fuel especially when you first wake up
helenS · 36-40, F
Yes, huge amounts of black coffee with lots of sugar, to get the engine running...
SW-User
If it's the first meal then, yep.
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
To me it is, always wake up hungry.
Barny52 · 56-60, M
Breakfast like a king, dinner like a prince, supper like a poor man and stay nice and slim,, didn’t work for me !!
TheDisciplinarian · 61-69, M
Indeed it is
Most Important about it though
Is placing needed energy and fluids
From the lack of same in prior 8 to 10 hours

It need not be a big meal
Though we All are used to as well as have different preferences

To me it is
iamelijah · 26-30, M
Yes, because it gives you energy before going to work.

But it depends on your body. Me right now, I have to skip dinner. I eat on breakfast, lunch until tea time.
Nevaeh0081 · 36-40, F
It's when you can/need to eat the most.

So, you can burn it off throughout the day.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
I seldom eat breakfast. I can't face food until I've been up for an hour or two.
Sharon · F
Breakfast is the first meal of the day. If one doesn't have a first meal, one would eventually starve to death.
SW-User
It sure is first thing in the morning. 🌞
I would not do well without it, so yes
Dino11 · M
It is for me.
SW-User
Perhaps in theory. I’m diabetic, and I’ve noticed that if I skip breakfast (like I used to), sometimes my numbers are skewed. So I’ll have a light breakfast, but I will eat.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@bijouxbroussard My wife is diabetic too. Like you, she eats regularly, but not too much at any one time.
Max41 · 26-30, M
But you are a witch . And in winter you might hibernate .
It is if you die before lunch.
SW-User
