Anyone else lose all hope in humanity?

Adam Johnson (the hockey player whose neck was slashed) was what sent me spinning down the rabbit hole. I can't even say why. Maybe because my son played hockey or maybe (and I am thinking more accurately) what a senseless loss of a beautiful human. I must get out of this spiral though easier said than done.

It is very senseless. But with these organizations and players, there is great resistance to safety measures. Heck, some professional players don't even have face shields. Many are willing to take the risk and they have no excuses

It's something that's going to have to be instilled in future players when they are kids to create change in how these sports are played

What I find even more disturbing is the over reaction to a death that was deliberate. Forcing all hockey players to wear neck guards seems a bit silly. Much like the demand that all hockey players wear helmets or face shields etc. What began as a friendly game of what we called shinny has become a game with full body armor which simply increases the recklessness of the players and the loss of respect for your opponent's humanity. Where once you tried to keep your shot low because the goalie was not wearing a mask or keeping the body checks within human tolerance because your opponent was not wearing padding or helmets has gone by the by. What once was a fun game that you needed a pair of skates a stick and a puck has become a armoured contest where the sides are out to kill each other. I quit watching NHL hockey when the game degenerated into a 'run your opponent through the boards' contest instead of a clean game of passing, checking and shooting. I watched the best game in history when the USSR team played the Montreal Canadiens. The score was tied at the end but the game was wonderful. End to end rushes clean checks wonderful shots. The Soviet players were in full body armor and the Canadiens didn't wear helmets. Players like the late Guy Lafleur speeding down the ice his long hair streaming out behind him. Wonderful game. Will never be played again.
Never had any hope in humanity, not even as a child.

There are wonderful efforts of pure altruism happening almost everywhere every day,
but the sum of our foolishness, greed and anger outweighs the good.

The proof is climate change and its rate of acceleration.

The effect of global warming will soon far surpass the sufferings from all other causes:
we're heading (the way of the dinosaurs) towards catastrophic global extinctions of 90% of all species,
possibly including our own due to loss of food production.

There are certainly times when I pound my puny fists on the ground and cry *^%^&$!!! what next, humanity?!? geez,folks-get a clue! But as I'm unfamiliar with this incident, this is not hitting home for me. I'm hoping your negativity is burst unexpectedly and something amazing is around the corner.
I like hockey.
Metal blades on ice? Intense.
Full contact blood sport? Check.
I see the appeal.
On a rare occasion a professional dies doing it. A pity, but also a big part of the primal appeal of this sport to our savage nature. I've met too many serious crime victims and perpetrators for this to even raise my blood pressure much.I do feel bad for his survivors, and do appreciate your post.

@dubkebab Thank you!

@Mikla Cheers. I've been going through trying times, but I can always find gratitude.
Earlier today I was venting about stresses and stuff to a houseguest and followed it up with...
'yeah, but I'm looking out that window at a meandering river framed by redwood forest-and not in an active warzone...so there's that at least...'

Hockey and football are brutal sports that have killed, maimed, and caused serious bodily harm to many players.

Guys have suffered severe brain trauma and paralysis from playing.

Sadly, what happened to Johnson should not come as a surprise.

@RedBaron I do know this too. It's too tragic for me to comprehend right now. Thank you for replying.!

The crap that goes on this crappy planet leads many to atheism and misanthropy. For good reason because the events on this planet justify that thinking.

At the moment yes. With all the killing going on people getting stabbed just so some kids can prove there selfs to gangs. All the war’s going on around the World it’s like we are heading for Miss destruction

Accidents and strange occurrences have always taken their toll on people . A man in this area was killed by an icicle that fell rim is barn and stuck him in the neck 10 years ago . It’s senseless but also part of being mortal .

Yes very much easier said than done. What this world is coming to is senseless. Hopeful it gets better for you.

It was a tragic accident. But I don't think there's a need to lose all faith in humanity :(

Why was "hope" trapped in Pandora's Box?
Hope can be a guiding light in the darkest times.
There are horrifying things that happen but I refuse to give up hope.

I found that story especially disturbing as well.
goliathtree · 56-60, M
this assumes that we had hope to begin with.

Not yet but it is looking rough.

It’s really sad with what happened to him. It was deliberate too which makes it worse I think.

That player obviously didn’t expect for that to happen.
