I've given space to someone I know , and it's a two edged sword . It was supposed to give them a place to start fixing their life from ....but all it did was make them try less.🤷

@OogieBoogie Yes, that's the thing you have to watch out for.
The arrangement must include an ultimatum; If they haven't found a place of their own by whatever time you both agree on, they're out.

No, there's a reason they are homeless. The second they get mail delivered to your house it's extremely difficult to get rid of them. There were neighbors of mine who partied but were nice guys and they had jobs. After a while more and more people were always at the house. When drugs started to be sold out of the house the Police showed up a few times. Those 2 guys moved but the drug dealers stayed. It was months before the landloard finally got rid of them.

@Pitchblue a common scenario
atlantic59 · 61-69, M
I offered an older busker a room for the summer cause I liked his music and I thought I might learn something, a few years back, and he liked the room while he left his equipment on the street to come and look at it but he decided to continue to sleep outdoors. He didn't know to trust me, I imagine.

@SandWitch That’s what I meant "for everyone". And unfortunately, that’s at least part of the reason for the NIMBY attitude people encounter when trying to help.

not likely.
It doesn't take long before they start bringing their problems, drug habits, and their other homeless buddies to stay.
Even if we are talking about bringing in a friend who isn't homeless YET, eventually that friend will bring problems. Like unable to help with bills yet receives 5 or 6 more packages from Amazon each week, or needs to borrow YOUR car all the time, or has a hard time finding a job but has no problem finding randos on dating sites to sleep with.
And of course they will, at the very least, try to suggest in roundabout ways that one of their friends or relatives needs a place to go.
And this is a "good" room mate. Bad ones, don't even ask.

Nope. I would help them on their feet in all other ways, if they show they are gonna commit to get better, but I wouldn't endanger the relationship by adding a third person in to this cramped space no.
Dv8rs · 18-21, F
@Queendragonfly Wise choice.
SW-User
🤷♂️ It's quite possible. Depending upon the nature of our relationship.
Dv8rs · 18-21, F
@SW-User True, and you seem to be smarter than that.

Thank you @Dv8rs!

I would have to think long and hard. I have helped two people with staying at my place long time ago. One was a person from work. It was bad. So I got rid of him. Then my youngest brother's gf. She was a slob snd hogged the bathroom while my then hudbsnd had to get ready for work. Finally got rid of her. I value my home snd my life a lot. I would likely offer to lend them dome money snd not expect it back. People seem to have no respect in other's homes.

It really depends on how well I know them. My mom recently had a bad experience inviting someone she knew who was in that situation. They threatened her and wrecked her house, and wouldn’t leave until she got the court involved after they ignored an official eviction notice.
Dv8rs · 18-21, F
@Colonelmustardseed Wow, I'm sorry that happened to your mom. It must have been horrible for her.
Colonelmustardseed · 36-40
@Dv8rs Yes, but they’re gone now, and she wasn’t physically harmed.
Dv8rs · 18-21, F
@Colonelmustardseed That's good, I'm glad she wasn't physically hurt.
sree251 · 41-45, M
Homelessness is a human condition. Someone you know living on the street is like coming upon a tortoise without a shell. If you are a tortoise, it would be like accommodating another tortoise in your shell. It's not an intelligent thing to do.
sree251 · 41-45, M
@Dv8rs There is also no solution in helping the homeless through stuffing two tortoises in one shell. If we don't throw away trillions of dollars on wars, there would be no homelessness and hunger. And most importantly, no danger of instigation of violence and military attack from America.

I never imagined when I wrote this question that I would have so many replies on Homeless People. I apologize to those that I haven't responded to, but my god 107 replies is a lot.
BigGuy2 · 26-30, M
@Dv8rs well, that's what you get when Liberals promise them EVERYTHING, provide homes etc etc to get their vote, then when in power, give them NOTHING
... just do a bit of basic research, you'll find that Liberal run States have WALL 2 WALL homeless people, whereas in Republican States, there is a problem, but not as MEGA extreme

Depends. I'm all for helping people especially homeless but sometimes people do become unstable and I can't invite that into my home with just my kiddo and I.

I have once
SW-User
@sree251 He was in the concourse, near the baggage claim area. it is not uncommon to see that here in California. Rent is too high and they become homeless due to no fault of their own
sree251 · 41-45, M
@SW-User Ok, I have read about that homeless situation in California. Even those who have jobs live in their cars. I guess your friend is not like those down and out homeless people at traffic lights asking for money.
SW-User
@sree251 Not at all 👍😊
PhoenixPhail · M
Yes, I would, provided they were interested in and willing to find their own quarters in the near future. I would help them with that.
Carissimi · F
It depends. Just because you know them doesn’t mean you are safe with them. They could be an addict, and bring all that entails to your home. However, I have paid for accommodations and food, and hospital bills for a very long time for some, although they don’t live near me.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Depends how I know them
sree251 · 41-45, M
Is homelessness a lifestyle choice?
sree251 · 41-45, M
@Dv8rs Yes, make housing affordable, as well as, everything else that we need to live a good life. Why are we not doing that? I think we are going about it all wrong living selfishly. All this talk about war is going to make more of us homeless. There are millions of Syrian refugees displace by our meddling. Ukraine is another homeless causing horror.
We won't make housing affordable by using our taxes to create homelessness through fighting war.

@sree251 you sound like a person that would suck my pink little starfish
sree251 · 41-45, M

Not a chance. I already have too many victims of life living at my house.

WatchThis · 41-45, M
@SandWitch I’m sure that’s in store for me. We’re working on getting there. Right now, we just repeatedly set ourselves up for failure every… single… day… and then, when failure happens, we cry victim. Anywho, I’ve got quite the camp of dependents now. I’d be doing anyone else a disservice, bringing them into this household
Id first sit and talk to them to find out why they are where they are.
soulshadow · 36-40, M
Depending on who.. i know a lot of sketchy people.
Dv8rs · 18-21, F
@soulshadow Are you bragging, or complaining?
exexec · 61-69, C
Probably, or else I would find someplace for them to stay.
Bleak · 36-40, F
Yeah. Definitely
Roundandroundwego · 61-69
No. I'd offer to get them their own camp.

@SandWitch no ,saying depends on situation.
I wouldn't take in an alcoholic or substance abuser.
Like the other person said if you allow them to get mail there you have legally evict them if they refuse to leave.

The 1st time you see them 'peeling' their socks off, {as they're stuck to their feet due to them not being taken off for weeks} you may have 2nd thoughts

@BigGuy2 I think you lack humanity. What if you were in that situation? Young and uncaring. What a way to be.
BigGuy2 · 26-30, M
@PoetryNEmotion NOPE ... a lot are there due to choice, a lot are there due to spending ALL their money on drink, drugs or gambling instead of paying the rent and bills

PoetryNEmotion · F
@BigGuy2 And your generation will rule the world? That is terrible for the likes of you. You think every homesless person is an addict? Or a gambler? When you have lived life and worked with people, when you become a man, then come back and tell me another truer answer. You are a sad individual. When homelessness touches your life, you shall learn. Heartless though you are now. Your parents would be ashamed of you. End of discussion. You are not worth my time. Adios.
